तीसरा घर मंगल का घर है। इसे लाल किताब तथा ज्योतिष के सभी पुराने ग्रंथों में तीसरे घर का कारक माना गया है। मंगल और बुध की आपस में शत्रुता है, इसीलिए इस घर में आकर बुध अपनी बुद्धि तथा अपनी शक्ति का पूरी तरह से प्रयोग नहीं कर सकता; जिसके फलस्वरूप उस व्यक्ति के लिए आमतौर पर अशुभ ही रहता है। इस अशुभता के बहुत से रूप हो सकते हैं। आचार्य वराहमिहिर का मत है कि यदि बुध तीसरे घर में हो, तो ऐसा व्यक्ति बहुत दुष्ट होता है। वास्तव में यह वर्णन थोड़ा सख्त लगता है, क्योंकि दुष्ट शब्द के अर्थ से ही हमें एक प्रकार का भय उत्पन्न होता है। वस्तुतः यहाँ दुष्ट से अर्थ यह है कि तीसरा घर हमारे साहस और हिम्मत का घर है। यहाँ मंगल के प्रभाव क्षेत्र में बैठा हुआ बुध अपनी बुद्धि का प्रयोग गलत ढंग से करता है। इसीलिए उसमें स्वयं की यथार्थता बहुत हद तक कम हो जाती है। मंगल के असर के कारण वह सोचता है कि उसमें विशेष प्रकार की शक्ति है, बुद्धि है लेकिन हकीकत ये है कि उसके जीवन में इस प्रकार का प्रभाव ही नजर नहीं आता। मुश्किल परिस्थितियों में बहादुरी से सामना करना ऐसे व्यक्ति के लिए सरल व सहज नहीं होता। ज्योतिष के सभी ग्रंथों के अनुसार तीसरे घर में क्रूर या पुरुष ग्रहों का होना शुभफल देता है। जिसके कारण व्यक्ति में साहस बहुत हद तक बढ़ जाता है। यहाँ पर बुध होने से वह साहस किसी हद तक कम हो जाता है किंतु ऐसा व्यक्ति दूसरों को ये प्रभाव जरूर दे सकता है कि वह बहुत नम्र स्वभाव का है। शायद यही कारण है कि चमत्कार चिंतामणि में लिखा है कि "ऐसा व्यक्ति बहुत विनम्र होता है।" इसी तरह सारावली में भी जिक्र आता है कि तीसरे घर में बुध होने से व्यक्ति दीन स्वभाव का होता है। वास्तव में, ये उस व्यक्ति की मजबूरी है कि उसको दूसरों के आगे नम्रता या दीनता दिखानी पड़ती है। लेकिन, ये उसके वास्तविक स्वभाव का हिस्सा नहीं है। दूसरे शब्दों में मैं यह कहना चाहता हूँ, कि यहाँ बुध होने से उस व्यक्ति की एक तरह की मजबूरी ही है कि वह दूसरों के साथ किसी बात पर बहस करते हुए या शारीरिक तौर पर झगड़ा करते हुए  अपने आपको बचाने के लिए नम्रता को एक बैसाखी के रूप में प्रयोग में लाता है, जिसको वास्तविक नम्रता कहना ठीक नहीं है। जब व्यक्ति दूसरों के साथ बहुत ही विनम्रता से पेश आता है तो सभी उसकी प्रशंसा करते हैं। लेकिन, यदि हम बहुत गहराई से सोचें, तो बहुत बार हमारी विनम्रता भी हमारे अभिमान का ही हिस्सा होती है। मिसाल के तौर पर यदि कोई व्यक्ति आपकी थोड़ी बहुत इज्जत करता है, लेकिन जुबान से आपको कहता रहता है कि साहब मैं तो आपके कदमों की धूल हूँ, मिट्टी हूँ। किंतु, यदि दूसरा व्यक्ति आगे से कह दे कि हाँ, आप धूल ही तो हैं मेरे कदमों की इससे ज्यादा नहीं। तब देखें इस विनम्र आदमी का प्रतिकरण क्या होगा ? यदि वह इस प्रकार के उत्तर से खुश होता है, तभी हम उसको सच्चा विनम्र कहेंगे। लेकिन, सच्चाई ये है कि दूसरे व्यक्ति के इस उत्तर से शायद वह आदमी गुस्से से आग-बबूला हो जाए और उसका विनम्रता का झूठा लिबास एक क्षण में उतर जाए। बृहद् यवन जातक ग्रंथ में इसी विचार को दूसरे शब्दों में कहा गया है। इसमें वर्णन आता है कि यहाँ बुध होने से व्यक्ति का चित्त शुद्ध नहीं होता। यहाँ शुद्धता से मतलब यही है, जो अपनी नम्रता या दूसरों की तारीफ या दूसरों से मिल-जुलकर काम करने का प्रभाव देता है- असल में ये उसका वास्तविक स्वभाव नहीं होता। वे उसके शुभ चित्त के भीतर से उत्पन्न हुआ नहीं होता। बहुत से ग्रंथों में जिक्र आता है कि ऐसा व्यक्ति मायावी स्वभाव का होता है। हमारे मिथहासिक संदर्भ में, मायावी का अर्थ है-एक व्यक्ति का अपने वास्तविक स्वरूप को बदलकर दूसरे रूप को धारण कर लेना। लेकिन इस अर्थ के अलावा भी दूसरा अर्थ है कि यहाँ पर बुध होने से उस व्यक्ति के मन में एक प्रकार का वहम रहता है कि उसमें विशेष प्रकार की क्षमता या शक्ति है। इस विशेष प्रकार की शक्ति के लिए बहुत से लोग किसी बेकार किस्म की साधना का सहारा लेते हैं, जिससे उनको कुछ प्राप्ति तो नहीं होती, लेकिन उनके मन में धारणा जरूर हो जाती है कि शायद उन्होंने कोई शक्ति प्राप्त की है। है। इसी तरह से थोड़ा बहुत भूत-प्रेत या किसी प्रकार की छाया या पिशाच-बाधा आदि के बारे में भी काफी विश्वास होता है और वह कई प्रकार की निशानियों से अपना अर्थ निकालने की कोशिश करते हैं। कई बार ये भी हो जाता है कि इसके बारे में वह दूसरे लोगों के साथ इस प्राप्ति की बात भी करते हैं। इससे मेरा यह मतलब नहीं है कि ऐसे व्यक्ति धार्मिक स्वभाव के नहीं हो सकते। उनमें धार्मिक होने की भावना किसी-न-किसी रूप में रहती जरूर है, जैसे हमारे एक प्राचीन ज्योतिषी कल्याण वर्मा ने लिखा है कि ऐसे व्यक्ति शास्त्रों व वेदाभ्यास में मग्न भी रह सकते हैं। लेकिन यहाँ पर मग्न रहने का अर्थ, आध्यात्मिक शक्ति प्राप्त करने का लक्ष्य नहीं है, बल्कि किसी-न-किसी प्रकार की शक्ति प्राप्त करने का लक्ष्य है, जो हमारे वास्तविक जीवन में प्रयोग में लाई जा सके। कई दफा जीवन की परिस्थितियों में ऐसे व्यक्ति बहुत तंग हो जाते हैं, तो वो संन्यास तक लेने की सोचते हैं। कभी-कभी संन्यास लेने की संभावना उनके मन में बहुत बढ़ जाती है। वास्तव में, ऐसे व्यक्ति के अंतःकरण में एक भावना बहुत तीव्र होती है कि वह जीवन में ऐशो-आराम की वस्तुओं का संपूर्ण रूप से प्रयोग करे या उनकी आर्थिक हालत बहुत अच्छी हो। जब ये इच्छा पूरी नहीं होती तो उनका दिमाग उनको दूसरे रास्ते पर ले जाने के लिए मजबूर करता है और यहाँ पर संन्यास लेना या साधु हो जाना भी एक तरह का एक विशेष प्रशंसा का पात्र बनना ही वास्तविक लक्ष्य होता है। यदि आप किसी साधु या संन्यासी की कुंडली में, तीसरे घर में बैठे हुए बुध को देखें तो आप समझ जाएँगे कि ये संन्यास उनके अभिमान का ही हिस्सा है। ये कोई वास्तविक विनम्रता या सच्चे वैराग्य से उत्पन्न साधुता नहीं है। भारत के सर्वश्रेष्ठ ज्योतिषी के अनुसार  इस घर में बुध होने से व्यक्ति के मन में बार-बार यात्रा करने की इच्छा उत्पन्न होती है। ऐसा करना उसकी चिंताओं के लिए या उसके मन की शांति के लिए शुभ फलदायी ही होता है। ये यात्राएँ कोई दूसरे देशों व्यक्तियों की संगति में रहता है जिससे उसकी स्मरण शक्ति का ठीक ढंग से उपयोग नहीं हो पाता। वास्तव में, बुध और मंगल का किसी भी रूप में संबंध होना हमारी संगति को खराब करता है। एक ज्योतिषी काटवे के अनुसार, आमतौर पर वह ज्योतिष के गहरे अध्ययन या ज्योतिष के दर्शनशास्त्र के बारे में बात करने की बजाय ये बात ज्यादा करेंगे कि मेरे पास कैसे-कैसे बड़े लोग आते हैं या मैं लोगों को इतना बड़ा सच बता सकता हूँ। इसके अलावा डॉक्टरों आदि के लिए यहाँ का बुध अच्छा ही फल देता है। उन्हें रोग के कारणों को समझने में ज्यादा देर नहीं लगती। लेखन, प्रकाशन तथा व्यापार आदि के लिए यहाँ पर बुध कोई बुरा फल नहीं देता। यहाँ बैठा हुआ बुध कई बार व्यक्ति को अपने भाइयों पर आश्रित करता है या दूसरे शब्दों में उसको भाइयों का सहारा लेने की आवश्यकता पड़ती है। ये और बात है कि ये सहारा हमेशा मिले या न मिले। मेरे देखने में आया है कि यहाँ पर बुध होने से बुआ, बहन या बेटी इन तीनों में से एक के लिए अच्छा फल नहीं रहता। ये बुरा फल गृहस्थ जीवन का फल, स्वास्थ्य या धन से संबंधित होता है। लाल किताब में यहाँ बैठे हुए बुध को कोढ़ी कहा गया है। शायद इसका कारण यह है कि इस घर का कारक मंगल बुध के फल को जरूरद से ज्यादा ही खराब कर देता है। ये जिक्र भी आता है कि यदि उस व्यक्ति की जुबान में तुतलापन हो या वह बोलने में तुतलाए तो बुध का असर इतना मंदा नहीं हो सकता। यदि तीसरे घर में बुध हो तो लाल किताब के अनुसार इसका ये विशेष फल आता है, कि उस व्यक्ति के मकान का दरवाजा दक्षिण की तरफ हो तो अपने जीवन में सुख की बहुत कमी रहती है। इसका असर स्वयं अपने पर, पत्नी, धन या ससुराल के लोगों पर पड़ सकता है। ऐसे बुरे प्रभाव को दूर करने के लिए अच्छी बात तो यही है कि वह व्यक्ति दक्षिणी दरवाजे वाले मकान में न रहे। ताकि बुध का बहुत बुरा प्रभाव कुछ हद तक अपने आप समाप्त हो सके। दूसरा उपाय ये है कि रात के समय साबुत मूँग पानी में भिगोकर रखें और सूरज चढ़ने के बाद उसको पशु-पक्षियों को तेंतालीस दिन तक लगातार डालते जाएँ। इससे उस व्यक्ति के व्यापार या काम में काफी हद तक सहायता मिलेगी और बुध का बुरा प्रभाव कम हो जाएगा। इस घर में यदि बुध के साथ बृहस्पति हो तो वह व्यक्ति को अपने भाग्य पर संतोष करने की शक्ति देता है। यदि पैसे के लिए शुभ असर न भी हो, तब भी आदमी में ज्ञान-प्राप्ति की इच्छा किसी-न-किसी हद तक बढ़ती है। यहाँ पर बुध के साथ सूर्य का होना धन के लिए बुरा असर नहीं देता। लेकिन यदि वह व्यक्ति गैर स्त्रियों से संबंध रखे, तो उसकी सामाजिक तौर पर बदनामी होने की पूरी संभावना रहती है। आयु के चौंतीस साल में आर्थिक नुकसान होना भी संभव है। यहाँ पर यदि बुध के साथ चंद्र हो तो इसका असर बहुत अच्छा नहीं रहता। मशीनरी आदि या बिजली संबंधित कामों से उस व्यक्ति को नुकसान होने का डर रहता है। यदि उस घर में बुध के साथ शुक्र हो तो कोई बुरा प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता। ऐसे व्यक्ति कई बार कुछ सालों तक नौकरी करने के बाद अपना व्यापार भी शुरू करें तो उनको लाभ ही होगा। लेकिन यदि उस व्यक्ति की औरत के खानदान के लोग काम में साझेदार होंगे तो ऐसे व्यक्ति का काम पहले तो चलेगा ही नहीं, चला भी तो उससे बहुत उलझनें पैदा होंगी। यहाँ पर बुध के साथ मंगल का होना आमतौर पर बुआ, बहन या बेटी के लिए अच्छा फल नहीं देता। यदि वह व्यक्ति अपने बड़े भाई के साथ अच्छे संबंध रखे तो उसकी आर्थिक हालत पर इसका किसी-न-किसी रूप में शुभ असर जरूर पड़ता है। इस घर में बुध के साथ शनि अपने काम के लिए अच्छा फल ही देता है। यहाँ बुध के साथ राहु का होना व्यक्ति में एक विशेष प्रकार की तेज बुद्धि पैदा करता है और जिसके साथ उसका संबंध होगा उन पर भी अच्छा ही प्रभाव पड़ता है। लेकिन, इसका शुभ असर उस व्यक्ति की चौंतीस The third house is the house of Mars. In Lal Kitab as well as in all ancient astrological texts, the third house is considered to be governed by Mars. Mars and Mercury are mutual enemies; therefore, when Mercury comes into this house, it is unable to fully utilize its intellect and strength. As a result, this placement is generally considered inauspicious for the native. This inauspiciousness can manifest in many forms. Acharya Varahamihira states that if Mercury is in the third house, the person is very wicked. In reality, this description sounds rather harsh, because the very meaning of the word “wicked” creates a sense of fear. In fact, what is meant by “wicked” here is that the third house represents courage and bravery. Mercury, sitting in the sphere of influence of Mars, uses its intellect in the wrong way. As a result, the person’s sense of realism is greatly reduced. Due to the influence of Mars, such a person believes that he possesses special power or intelligence, but in reality, such influence is not evident in his life. Facing difficult situations bravely is not easy or natural for such a person. According to all astrological texts, the presence of cruel or masculine planets in the third house gives auspicious results, as it greatly increases courage. For example, if someone shows you some respect but keeps saying verbally, “Sir, I am the dust of your feet, I am nothing,” but if the other person replies, “Yes, you are only dust beneath my feet, nothing more than that,” then observe the reaction of this humble person. If he feels happy with such a reply, only then can he be called truly humble. But the truth is that such a reply would probably make him furious, and his false cloak of humility would fall off instantly. The Brihat Yavana Jataka expresses this idea in different words. It states that when Mercury is placed here, the mind of the person is not pure. By purity, it means that the humility, praise for others, or cooperative attitude he displays is not his true nature—it does not arise from genuine goodwill within his heart. Many texts mention that such a person has a deceptive nature. In pursuit of such supposed powers, many people resort to useless forms of spiritual practices. Although they gain nothing, they develop the belief that they have acquired some power. Sometimes, they even talk to others about these supposed attainments. This does not mean that such people cannot be religious. They do possess religious inclinations in some form. However, being “engaged” here does not mean seeking spiritual liberation; rather, it implies seeking some form of power that can be applied in practical life. At times, when life circumstances become very difficult, such people even contemplate renunciation. Sometimes, the tendency toward taking sannyasa (monastic life) becomes quite strong. In reality, deep within their hearts, there is a very intense desire to fully enjoy luxuries or to be financially well-off. When this desire is not fulfilled, their mind pushes them toward another path, and even becoming a renunciate or a monk becomes a way to gain special recognition and admiration. If you examine the horoscope of a monk or renunciate who has Mercury in the third house, you will understand that their renunciation is also a part of their ego. It is not born out of true humility or genuine detachment. With Mercury in this house, the person repeatedly feels the desire to travel. Such travel is beneficial for his mental peace and worries. These journeys are not usually long-distance or foreign travels, but rather short trips to nearby places. I have observed that when Mercury is placed here, the person’s memory power increases significantly. If such a person associates with good people, he can use this ability beneficially in business or work. However, Mercury sitting in Mars’s house often brings such people into the company of individuals due to whom their memory and intellect are not used properly. In reality, any kind of connection between Mercury and Mars spoils one’s associations. According to an astrologer named Katwe, Mars damages the results of Mercury. Mercury essentially represents our associations—our friends and close contacts. Whenever Mercury and Mars are connected in any way, the person tends to lack good company, and as a result, much of his intelligence and memory power is not utilized properly. Such people also show interest in astrology, but generally, instead of deep study or philosophical discussions on astrology, they prefer to boast about how influential people visit them or how they can reveal great truths to others.For doctors, however, Mercury in this house gives good results. In Lal Kitab, Mercury placed here is referred to as “leprous.” Perhaps this is because Mars, the significator of this house, excessively damages Mercury’s results. It is also mentioned that if the person stammers while speaking, the negative effect of Mercury is not as severe. According to Lal Kitab, if Mercury is in the third house and the entrance of the person’s house faces south, there is a great lack of happiness in life. This can affect the person himself, his wife, wealth, or in-laws. To reduce these negative effects, it is advisable that such a person should not live in a house with a south-facing entrance. This alone can significantly reduce Mercury’s harmful influence. Another remedy is to soak whole green gram (mung beans) in water at night and, after sunrise, feed them to birds or animals continuously for forty-three days. This helps considerably in business or work and reduces Mercury’s negative effects. If Jupiter is with Mercury in this house, it gives the person the ability to be content with his destiny. Even if financial results are not very favorable, the desire for acquiring knowledge increases to some extent. If the Sun is with Mercury here, it does not give bad results for wealth. However, if the person engages in relationships with other women, there is a strong possibility of social disgrace. Financial loss around the age of thirty-four is also possible. If the Moon is with Mercury here, the results are generally not good. There is a risk of loss in machinery-related or electrical work.
