कुंभ लग्न के स्वभाव को समझाने के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ ज्योतिष के आचार्यों ने कई प्रकार के प्रतीक दर्शाएं हैं। एक प्रतीक के अनुसार कुंभ राशि को एक पुरुष दिखाया गया है. जो अपने कंधों पर पानी से भरा हुआ घड़ा ले जा रहा है। यहां पर इशारा इस बात की ओर है कि वह प्यासों को पानी पिलाने वाला अर्थात् दूसरों की जरूरतों को पूरा करने वाला व्यक्ति होता है। कुंभ राशि की एक और आकृति के बारे में यह भी एक प्रतीक है कि कुंभ एक ऐसा बर्तन है जो अमृत से भरा हुआ है और इसके साथ ही यह ऐसे गर्भ का प्रतीक भी है जिसमें उत्पत्ति की क्षमता बहुत ज्यादा है। शायद भारत में शुभ अवसरों पर पानी का कुंभ इसीलिए स्थापित किया जाता है। ऐसा कुंभ शादियों तथा कई और धार्मिक यज्ञ आदि के समय पर भी प्रयोग में आता है। दूसरे शब्दों में, कुंभ राशि, शुभता की प्रतीक मानी गई है तथा गर्भ की उत्पत्ति की आकृति इसके आर्थिक, मानसिक विकास के बारे में भी इशारा करती है। हमारे एक महान् ज्योतिषी हिमाद्री ने कुंभ राशि के प्रतीक को दर्शाते हुए कहा है कि यह एक ऐसा व्यक्ति है जिसका चेहरा समुद्री मानव का है और यह मानव एक कमल के फूल पर बैठा है और एक पानी से भरे हुए बर्तन को खाली कर रहा है। यदि हम इस प्रतीक को ध्यान से देखें तो यहां पर भी पानी से भरे हुए घड़े को खाली करवा, दूसरों की प्यास बुझाने तथा उत्पत्ति और विकास की ओर ही इशारा करता है। इन प्रतीकों तथा ज्योतिष आचार्यों के भिन्न-भिन्न मतों से हम कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्ति के बारे में विशेष रूप से कह सकते हैं कि कुंभ लग्न का व्यक्ति दूसरों की सहायता करने से कभी नहीं हिचकिचाता। वह अपने जीवन में मानसिक विकास बहुत सीमा तक करता है तथा अपने बचपन की पारिवारिक स्थितियों को तोड़कर बहुत आगे बढ़ता है। इसके कमल के फूल पर बैठे होने के प्रतीक से इस ओर भी इशारा है कि कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्ति जीवन में सुंदरता के पुजारी होते हैं। यह सुंदरता उनके अपने जीवन की शैली में हो या उनके दूसरे सुंदर लोगों के संबंध में हो। सभी मतों को देखते हुए यहां हमें इस बात का ध्यान भी रखना चाहिए कि कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्ति में पानी के पानी का बहता हुआ दरिया अपना रुख किस तरफ मोड़ ले, इसके बारे में हम पक्के तौर पर नहीं कह सकते। हां, इतना जरूर सच है कि बहता पानी अपने आगे आई मुश्किलों से रुक नहीं पाता और वह रेत, पत्थर, मिट्टी आदि की रुकावटों को दूर करता हुआ जिधर जाना चाहे उस ओर रास्ता बना लेता है। मैं एक महिला को बहुत सालों से बहुत नजदीकी से जानता हूं। उसके विवाहित जीवन में कुछ मुश्किलें थीं और एक दिन उसने अपनी दोनों बेटियों के साथ हमेशा के लिए अपने पति का घर छोड़ दिया जबकि उसके पास रहने की कोई जगह नहीं थी। वह महिला होस्टल में रहकर अपनी दोनों बेटियों का पालन-पोषण करने लगी। सभी को हैरानी थी कि वह किस तरह जीवन का निर्वाह करेगी। उसके कुछ महीनों बाद मेरे सुनने में आया कि उसने अपनी एक सरकारी स्कूल में लगी हुई अध्यापिका की नौकरी से त्यागपत्र दे दिया है और एक आर्थिक विषय पर पत्रिका प्रकाशित करने का इरादा बना लिया है। मुझे और दूसरे जानने वालों के लिए यह बहुत अचंभे और चिंता की बात थी कि ऐसी स्थिति में इस तरह का एकदम इरादा बना लेना, जानबूझकर आग में कूद जाने जैसी बात है। लेकिन अपनी तीक्ष्ण बुद्धि और लगन के कारण वह अपने इस क्षेत्र में बहुत सफलता प्राप्त कर सकी। लेकिन जो उसे जानने वाले थे, वह अपनी बुद्धि पर जरूर शंका करने लगे कि हम शायद ही यह क्षमता रखते हैं कि हम सबको ठीक से जान सकते हैं। इस तरह, कुंभ लग्न को एक महिला को ठीक से जानने में हमारी बुद्धि संपूर्ण रूप से बेकार हो गई। मेरे एक और नजदीकी व्यक्ति आर्टस स्कूल में पढे । उनको चित्रकला में काफी रुचि रही और वो बहुत मेहनत से इस काम में लगे भी रहे। उसके बाद किसी शैक्षिक संस्था में वह अध्यापक के तौर पर काम करने लगे, जहां उन्हें अच्छी तनख्वाह भी मिलती थी। फिर अचानक एक दिन उन्हें ज्योतिषी बनने का ख्याल आया और वह अपने चित्रकला के हुनर को एक तरफ रखकर ज्योतिष विद्या के क्षेत्र में कूद पड़े और इसमें उन्होंने कुछ सीमा तक सफलता भी प्राप्त की। फिर कुछ सालों के बाद लावे जैसा उबलता हुआ उनका जोश चित्रकारी और ज्योतिष से उनके कुंभ लग्न होने की वजह से अपने ही कुंभ से कुछ पानी की बूंदें गिरने पर ठंडा पड़ गया और उन्होंने एक अच्छा कैमरा खरीदकर फोटोग्राफी के क्षेत्र में ही अपना जीवन व्यतीत करने की सोच बना ली। अब वह आगे क्या करेंगे इसके बाद में कोई मुझसे पूछे तो मैं अपने दोनों कान पकड़कर कहूंगा कि नहीं इस व्यक्ति के बारे में मैं कुछ नहीं कह सकता। ऊपर दिए गए उदाहरणों के पीछे अर्थ यह है कि कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्ति के बारे में आप कोई पक्की धारणा नहीं बना सकते। आज वो जिस चीज को अपना जीवन समझता है, शायद आने वाले कल में वह उसे एक स्वप्न की तरह अनुभव करे और अपनी क्षमता को किसी और क्षेत्र में पूरी तरह लगा दे। इसलिए मेरे अपने विचार में कुंभ लग्न वालों के लिए यह आवश्यक है कि वह अपने स्वभाव की इस अस्थिरता को यदि बदलने की कोशिश करें तो उनके जीवन में सफलता की सीमा बहुत हद तक बढ़ सकती है। लेकिन यदि आप ध्यान से देखें तो कुंभ लग्न के लोग ऐसा कर भी कैसे सकते हैं? क्योंकि कुंभ लग्न की कुंडली में छठे घर में कर्क राशि पड़ती है और कर्क राशि का स्वामी चंद्रमा है जो हमारे मन का कारक है। इसलिए छठे घर में चंद्रमा की कर्क राशि के मालिक चंद्रमा के कमजोर होने के कारण से उनमें अपने विचारों व दृष्टिकोण में एक ही लकीर पर चलने की आदत कोई पक्का रूप नहीं ले सकती और इसी कारण से उनके जीवन में कई प्रकार के परिवर्तन आते रहते हैं। किंतु जितनी देर के लिए भी वह किसी भी क्षेत्र में अपने ध्यान को केंद्रित करते हैं: उतने समय तक उनकी सफलता का दायरा काफी तेजी से प्रगति करता है। यह और बात है कि जब वो अपनी प्रगति की चरम सीमा पर पहुंचने वाले हों, तो उनके मन में कोई छोटी-सी हवा के झोंके पानी की लहर-सी पैदा कर दें और वह अपने उस लक्ष्य को छोडकर बिल्कुल किसी दूसरे ही लक्ष्य में लग जाएं। विश्व के लगभग सभी ज्योतिषियों का मत है कि कुंभ का युग अब आने वाला है और कुछ का मत है कि कुंभ युग आरंभ हो चुका है। 'कुंभ युग' के बारे में ज्योतिषियों का विचार है कि वह युग हमारे पिछले युगों के मुकाबले में बहुत प्रगतिशील दृष्टिकोण का होगा और उसमें कई प्रकार के नए अविष्कार होंगे जिनका हमारे भौतिक तत्त्वों से इतना संबंध नहीं होता। इस विचारधारा को कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्तियों के संदर्भ में समझने के लिए यह देखने में आता है कि कुंभ लग्न का व्यक्ति अपने जीवन में अपने दृष्टिकोण में सामाजिक स्थितियों तथा धारणाओं से आगे होता है। यानी आने वाले युग में जिन चीजों को स्वीकार किया जाएगा को अब वर्जित समझी जाती है। शायद कुंभ लग्न का व्यक्ति अपने समय से आगे जीता है इसलिए वह अपने बर्ताव में आज के सामाजिक युग की धारणाओं आज की सामाजिक कीमतों की बिल्कुल परवाह नहीं करते और वह अपने ही जरूरत से ज्यादा प्रगतिशील विचारों में जीने की कोशिश करते हैं। कोई उनके बारे में क्या राय रखता है, इसकी उन्हें चिंता नहीं होती। कुंभ युग के व्यक्ति में आने वाले युग की धारणा का रूप किसी और दृष्टिकोण से भी देखा जा सकता है। शायद अभी कुंभ युग आरंभ हुआ है। जिसके फलस्वरूप भविष्य में वायरलेस, टेलिफोन तथा बिना तारों के ही आवाज या आकृति को दूर तक पहुंचाने के माध्यमों का आविष्कार हो चुका है। कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्ति के अचेतन मन में इस तरह के आविष्कार जन्म से ही पाए जाते हैं। इसलिए उनमें अतीन्द्रिय क्षमता की वृत्ति भी काफी मात्रा में पाई जाती है। कुछ ज्योतिषियों ने कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्ति को सनकी कहकर पुकारा है, लेकिन कुछ और विद्वानों के अनुसार कुछ सीमा तक उनको पागल भी कहा जा सकता है। इसका कारण यह है कि हम उनके कर्म व उनके बर्ताव से जो आशा करते हैं वो आमतौर पर उसके विपरीत ही होती है। यही कारण है कि उनको समझना बहुत मुश्किल है। लेकिन यहां पर यह बात देखने में जरूर आती है कि ऐसे व्यक्ति अपने जीवन में किसी-न-किसी रूप में मशहूरी प्राप्त जरूर करते हैं। ऐसी प्रसिद्धि का रूप कुछ भी हो सकता है। कुछ लोगों की नजर में वह बहुत धर्मात्मा या बुद्धिजीवी हो सकते हैं और कुछ लोगों के विचार में वह झूठ बोलने वाले तथा चालाकी से दूसरों से काम निकलवाने में माहिर हो सकते हैं। वास्तव में हो सकता है जब कुंभ लग्न में शनि-बुध या शुक्र हों। लेकिन यदि कुंभ लग्न में सूर्य, चंद्र हों तो उनमें एक विशेष प्रकार की चालाकी भी पाई जाती है और वह इस चालाकी को बहुत कोशिश से छपाने का प्रयत्न भी नहीं करते। कुंभ लग्न पर शुभ प्रभाव हो या अशुभ, यह जरूर देखा गया है कि इन व्यक्तियों में किसी-न-किसी रूप में बुद्धिजीवी होना या किसी प्रकार के शिल्प, लेखन-कार्य, चित्रकारी, संगीत आदि का शौक जरूर देखा जाता है और यदि ऐसे शौक को अपने जीवन में सृजनात्मक रूप में साकार करने का मौका न भी मिले तब भी उनके मन में चेतन रूप से इन चीजों के प्रति विशेष अनकर्षण जरूर रहता है। शायद इसका कारण यह है कि कुंभ राशि वायु तत्त्व की कारक है तथा कुंभ राशि का प्रतीक जल है। जल हमारे भावनात्मक जीवन से बहुत संबंध रखता है क्योंकि हमारी भावना में भी जल की तरह लहरें-सी उठती हैं और वायु का हमारी कल्पनाशीलता यानी विचारों का बहुत तेजी से ऊंचे आकाश में उड़ना आदि से संबंध रहता है। यही कारण है कि इसमें कल्पना-शक्ति तथा भावनात्मक क्षमता बहुत ज्यादा पाई जाती है। देखने में आया है कि कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्तियों का विवाहित जीवन संपूर्ण रूप से सुखमय नहीं होता। इसमें किसी-न-किसी रूप में कमी रहती है। यह कमी पति-पत्नी के विचारों के न मिलने के कारण हो सकती है या किसी और कारण से भी ऐसा हो सकता है। मेरे देखने में आया है कि एक बहुत ही बुद्धिजीवी और पैसे को दिलेरी से खर्च करने वाली औरत की शादी एक अमीर डॉक्टर से हुई, किंतु डॉक्टर इतना कंजूस था कि उनका विवाहित जीवन एक नर्क ही बना रहा। एक और दूसरी स्त्री को मैं जानता हूं, जिसमें सृजनात्मक रूप में संगीत और गायन में बहुत रुचि है, किंतु उनके पति केवल पैसा कमाने में कभी भी उसको इन चीजों में प्रोत्साहन नहीं देते। प्रशंसा करने की बजाय, पत्नी के इस शौक के कारण निंदा ही करते हैं। अगर हम ध्यान से देखें तो इसका कारण शायद यह है कि कुंभ लग्न वालों के सातवें घर में सिंह राशि पड़ती है। कुंभ लग्न का स्वामी शनि है और सातवें घर यानी शादी के घर का स्वामी सूर्य है। शनि और सूर्य में जन्मजात शत्रुता है। शायद यही कारण है कि पति-पत्नी में एक घनिष्ठ प्रेम तथा एक जैसा दृष्टिकोण होना या एक-दूसरे की सृजनात्मक क्षमता को प्रोत्साहन देना इसी कारण से संभव नहीं होता। कुछ हालतों में पति-पत्नी का शादी-शुदा जीवन समय से पहले ही तलाक आदि के कारण टूट भी सकता है और यदि न भी टूटे तो वह सुख की खुशबू से भरा हुआ जीवन नहीं कहा जा सकता। मेरे देखने में आया है कि कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्तियों को अपने पिता से पूर्ण सुख प्राप्त नहीं होता। मेरे कहने का मतलब यह नहीं है कि पिता से संबंध अच्छे नहीं रहते, बल्कि कुछ हालतों में पिता की आयु कम होने के कारण वो अपने पिता के प्रेम का सुख पूरी तरह नहीं भोग पाते। कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्तियों का अपने भाइयों के साथ मुकदमे-बाजी या झगड़ा आदि तो कम होता है, किंतु उनके भाइयों के साथ संबंध ठीक नहीं रह पाते। मेरे अपने अनुभव के अनुसार यदि कुंभ लग्न का व्यक्ति बड़ा भाई हो तो वह अपने छोटे भाई के लिए बहुत कुछ करता है और अपनी क्षमता के अनुसार उसकी सहायता भी करता है; लेकिन छोटे भाई की ओर से उसको अपने इस शुभचिंतक होने का फल प्राप्त नहीं होता और किसी-न-किसी रूप में अंत में भाइयों के संबंधों में एक प्रकार की दरार आ जाने की संभावना होती है। वास्तव में, इसका कारण यह है कि कुंभ राशि के व्यक्तियों के लिए तीसरे स्थान में यानी जो भाइयों का कारक है उसमें मेष राशि पड़ती है, जो मंगल की राशि है। मंगल और शनि में कोई इतनी शत्रुता नहीं है, किंतु यदि हम कालपुरुष कुंडली के अनुसार देखें तो तीसरे घर में बुध की मिथुन राशि आती है-इसलिए बुध की राशि में, मंगल की राशि का पड़ना, तीसरे घर यानी भाइयों के घर पर कोई शुभ असर नहीं डालता। 'लाल किताब' तथा पराशरीय ज्योतिष के अनुसार और ज्योतिष की दूसरी पद्धतियों के अनुसार भी तीसरे घर का कारक मंगल है और यहां मिथुन राशि पड़ने से यहां इस घर के प्रभाव को खराब कर देता है क्योंकि मंगल और बुध आपस में बहुत शत्रुता रखने वाले ग्रह हैं जिससे दोनों का फल कुछ सीमा तक कमजोर हो जाता है। शायद यही कारण है कि कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्तियों को भाइयों से इतना सुख प्राप्त नहीं होता । आर्थिक तथा पैसे के क्षेत्र में कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्तियों को बहुत मुश्किलों का सामना नहीं करना पड़ता। लेकिन यहां पर इस बात का ध्यान रखना जरूरी है कि जैसे-जैसे कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्तियों की आयु बढ़ेगी वैसे-वैसे उनकी आर्थिक स्थिति में सुधार आता रहता है क्योंकि कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्तियों के दूसरे घर में बृहस्पति की मीन राशि आती है और बृहस्पति धन का कारक है। इसके अलावा कुंभ लग्न में खर्च के यानी बारहवें घर में शनि की अपनी ही राशि पड़ती है, इसलिए उनके धन का नाश नहीं होता। यानी उनका धन बहुत बड़ी मात्रा में बेकार के कामों में या मजबूरी के कामों में खर्च नहीं होता। इसलिए ऐसे व्यक्ति अपनी आयु के बढ़ने के साथ-साथ जब वृद्ध अवस्था में पहुंचते हैं तो वह आर्थिक पक्ष से अपने आपको बहुत सुरक्षित अनुभव करते हैं। कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्ति धन को बहुत कंजूसी के साथ जमा करने के आदी नहीं होते। जैसे-जैसे उनके पास धन आता है वो खुले दिल से उसी मात्रा में अपने शौक को पूरा करने के लिए या दूसरों की सहायता करने के लिए खर्च करने में भी कोई बनिए जैसा हिसाब-किताब नहीं रखते | मेरे देखने में आया है कि कुंभ लग्न के व्यक्तियों के जीवन में 40 साल की आयु में बहुत बड़ी तब्दीली आती है। इस आयु में आकर उनके जीवन की धारा कोई दूसरा ही रूप ले जाती है, जिससे उनका 40 साल के पहले के जीवन का कोई विशेष संबंध नहीं होता। लेकिन यदि हम ‘लाल किताब' के हिसाब से सोचें तो बहुत से ग्रंथकारों का मत है कि 40वें साल में उनके जीवन में विशेष परिवर्तन आता है। इसकी बजाय यह कहना ठीक होगा कि 36वें साल से लेकर 41 साल की आयु के बीच में उनके जीवन में इस प्रकार का परिवर्तन कभी भी आरंभ हो सकता है-क्योंकि 'लाल-किताब' के अनुसार शनि का हमारी आयु पर प्रभाव देने का समय 36 से 41 साल की आयु तक होता है। कुंभ लग्न का व्यक्ति मुश्किल स्थितियों से कभी नहीं डरता। शायद यही कारण है कि वह किसी भी प्रकार के अवसर को अपने हाथ से नहीं जाने देता, बेशक उसमें खतरे की या नुकसान की संभावना बहुत ज्यादा हो। इस किस्म के दृष्टिकोण के कारण कुंभ लग्न का व्यक्ति अपने आपको अपनी क्षमता से भी ज्यादा कामों में उलझाए रखता है।
