कहते हैं कि समय के अनादि चक्र में एक बार ऐसा प्रसंग आया जब यमलोक में विचित्र शांति छा गई। सामान्यतः वहाँ दूतों का आवागमन लगा रहता था—किसी को प्रेतलोक से लाना, किसी को कर्मों के अनुसार मार्ग दिखाना। परन्तु उस दिन न नरक का द्वार खुल रहा था, न यमदूत लौट रहे थे, न किसी पापी आत्मा की चीख वहाँ गूंज रही थी। पूरा यमलोक जैसे मौन हो गया था।

यमराज अपने सिंहासन पर बैठे थे, परंतु उनके मन में गंभीर चिंता ने घर कर लिया। उन्होंने चित्रगुप्त को बुलाया।

"चित्रगुप्त! आज बहीखाते इतने शांत क्यों हैं? कहीं कोई त्रुटि तो नहीं?"

चित्रगुप्त ने नम्र स्वर में कहा—

"प्रभु, बहीखाते बिल्कुल सही हैं। तीन दिनों से एक भी नई आत्मा को नरक का मार्ग नहीं मिला है। सबके पाप जैसे विलीन हो रहे हैं।"

यमराज की भौंहें तन गईं।

"क्या संसार में पाप समाप्त हो गया? क्या लोग अब पूर्णतः पवित्र हो गए?"

चित्रगुप्त भी चकित थे,

"प्रभु, पाप का पूर्णतः अंत तो संभव नहीं… परंतु ऐसा लग रहा है मानो किसी अदृश्य शक्ति ने संसार के पापों को धो दिया हो।"

यमराज के मन में संशय और जिज्ञासा दोनों उत्पन्न हुए।

उन्होंने निर्णय लिया—

“इस रहस्य का समाधान केवल भगवान श्रीहरि विष्णु ही बता सकते हैं।”

तुरंत ही यमराज अपने गौर वर्ण भैंसे पर सवार हुए और वैकुण्ठ की ओर प्रस्थान किया। वैकुण्ठ का द्वार सदैव की भांति प्रकाशमान था, परंतु उस दिन वहाँ का तेज और भी अधिक दिव्य प्रतीत हो रहा था।

भगवान विष्णु शेषनाग की शैय्या पर विराजमान थे, और माता लक्ष्मी उनके चरणों की सेवा कर रही थीं।

यमराज ने प्रणाम करके पूछा—

“प्रभु! पापी आत्माएँ यमलोक क्यों नहीं आ रहीं? क्या जगत से पाप समाप्त हो गया है? मेरे दूत खाली बैठे हैं, नरक की अग्नि शांत पड़ी है, और चित्रगुप्त के बहीखाते सूने पड़े हैं। यह सब क्या हो रहा है?”

भगवान विष्णु ने मंद मुस्कान के साथ यमराज की तरफ देखा—

“यम, यह न तो तुम्हारी शक्ति का ह्रास है, न संसार में पाप का अंत हुआ है… यह तो वैशाख मास का प्रभाव है।”

विष्णु द्वारा वैशाख महात्म्य का रहस्य

यमराज स्तब्ध रह गए,

“प्रभु! क्या केवल एक महीने की शक्ति इतनी प्रबल हो सकती है?”

विष्णु बोले—

“यमराज, वैशाख मास को देवताओं में ‘माधव मास’ कहा गया है। इस महीने सूर्योदय से पहले उठकर नदी में स्नान करने वाला, तुलसी की सेवा करने वाला, प्यासे राहगीरों को शीतल जल देने वाला—इन सबका जन्म-जन्मांतर का पाप भस्म हो जाता है।

इस समय मनुष्य का एक छोटा सा पुण्य भी हजारों गुना फल देता है।

और जो मनुष्य वैशाख माहात्म्य की कथा सुन लेते हैं,

उनका मार्ग यमलोक की ओर नहीं होता…

वे सीधे मेरे बैकुंठ धाम में प्रवेश पाते हैं।”

विष्णु आगे बोले—

“इस महीने की तपन में धरती तपती है, नदियों का जल कम होने लगता है। यदि कोई मनुष्य इस समय दूसरों के लिए शीतल जल का प्रबंध करता है, तो समझो उसने अनगिनत पापियों को जीवनदान दिया।

ऐसा मनुष्य तुम्हारे दंड का पात्र नहीं होता, यम!”

यमराज की सीख

यमराज ने विनयपूर्वक पूछा—

“प्रभु, तो क्या इस मास में मेरा कार्य निष्फल हो जाता है?”

विष्णु मुस्कुराए,

“नहीं यम, तुम्हारा कार्य कभी निष्फल नहीं। परंतु यह महीना परम क्षमा का महीना है।

जैसे तुम्हारे पास दंड देने का अधिकार है, वैसे ही मेरे पास दया करने का अधिकार।

वैशाख में मैं संसार को अतिरिक्त दया प्रदान करता हूँ।”

यमराज ने करबद्ध होकर कहा—

“हे विष्णु! निश्चय ही यह महीना मनुष्यों के लिए वरदान है। यदि वैशाख ऐसे पुण्य देता है, तो मैं इस माह को स्वयं भी प्रणाम करता हूँ।”

विष्णु बोले—

“यम, तुम देवताओं में न्याय के प्रतीक हो। और न्याय तभी पूर्ण होता है जब उसमें दया भी सम्मिलित हो। वैशाख मास वही दया है।”

संसार में बदली हवा

उस दिन के बाद यमराज ने अपने दूतों को निर्देश दिया—

“जो लोग वैशाख में स्नान, दान, तुलसी सेवा और पीने के जल की व्यवस्था करते हैं, उन्हें भय दिखाने की आवश्यकता नहीं। वे प्रभु माधव के प्रिय हैं।”

यमदूतों ने भी देखा कि पृथ्वी पर लोग सुबह-सुबह पवित्र नदियों में स्नान कर रहे थे, कुओं के पास मटकों में शीतल जल रख रहे थे, किसी राहगीर को प्यासा न रहने देने का प्रण ले रहे थे।

हर गाँव, हर नगर में प्याऊ लग रही थी।

और सचमुच—

नरक के द्वार शांत रहे।

पाप की परछाइयाँ हल्की हो गईं।

धरती पर दया, धर्म और भक्तिभाव बढ़ गया।

कथा का सार

तब से यह परंपरा चली कि—

वैशाख में ‘माधव’ की पूजा, स्नान, दान और जल-सेवा करने से यम का भय मिट जाता है।

मनुष्य हल्का, निर्मल और पवित्र बन जाता है, और उसकी यात्रा पापलोक नहीं बल्कि प्रभु के धाम की ओर होती है।

और यमराज स्वयं कहते हैं—

“वैशाख मास में किया गया पुण्य देवताओं को भी स्पर्श करता है।”

It is said that, within the eternal cycle of time, there once came a moment when a strange silence descended upon Yamaloka. Typically, there was a constant coming and going of messengers—fetching souls from the realm of spirits or guiding them along their paths according to their deeds. Yet, on that day, neither did the gates of Hell open, nor did the messengers of Death return, nor did the screams of any sinful soul echo through the halls. It was as if all of Yamaloka had fallen silent.

Yamaraj sat upon his throne, yet a deep anxiety had taken root in his mind. He summoned Chitragupta.

"Chitragupta! Why are the ledgers so quiet today? Has some error occurred?"

Chitragupta replied in a humble voice:

"Lord, the ledgers are entirely accurate. For three days now, not a single new soul has been directed toward the path of Hell. It is as if everyone's sins are simply dissolving away."

Yamaraj’s brows furrowed in astonishment.

"Has sin vanished from the world? Have people suddenly become completely pure?"

Chitragupta, too, was perplexed:

"Lord, the complete eradication of sin is surely impossible... yet it feels as though some invisible force has washed away the sins of the world."

Both doubt and curiosity arose in Yamaraj’s mind.

He reached a decision:

"Only Lord Shri Hari Vishnu can provide the answer to this mystery."

Immediately, Yamaraj mounted his fair-complexioned buffalo and set off toward Vaikuntha. The gates of Vaikuntha shone brightly, as they always did; yet on that particular day, their radiance seemed even more divine.

Lord Vishnu was seated upon the celestial couch of Sheshnag, while Goddess Lakshmi attended to His feet.

Offering his obeisance, Yamaraj asked:

"Lord! Why are sinful souls no longer arriving at Yamaloka? Has sin truly vanished from the world? My messengers sit idle, the fires of Hell lie dormant, and Chitragupta’s ledgers stand empty. What, precisely, is happening?" Lord Vishnu looked at Yamraj with a gentle smile—

“Yama, this is neither a diminution of your power, nor has sin vanished from the world... this is simply the influence of the month of Vaishakh.”

**Vishnu Reveals the Secret of the Glory of Vaishakh**

Yamraj stood astounded:

“Lord! Can the power of a single month truly be so potent?”

Vishnu replied:

“Yamraj, among the deities, the month of Vaishakh is known as ‘Madhav Maas’ (the Month of Madhav). For anyone who rises before sunrise during this month to bathe in a river, who tends to the sacred Tulsi plant, or who offers cool water to thirsty travelers—the sins accumulated over countless lifetimes are reduced to ashes.

During this time, even the smallest act of virtue performed by a human being yields a reward a thousandfold.

And those who listen to the sacred tales extolling the glory of Vaishakh—

Their path does not lead toward Yamaloka...

They gain direct entry into My divine abode, Vaikuntha.”

Vishnu continued:

“During the scorching heat of this month, the earth itself swelters, and the waters of the rivers begin to recede. If a human being arranges for cool water for others during this time, consider it as if he has granted the gift of life to countless sinners.

Such a person is not a worthy subject for your punishment, Yama!”

**The Lesson for Yamraj**

Yamraj asked humbly:

“Lord, does this mean that my duties become futile during this month?”

Vishnu smiled:

“No, Yama; your duties are never futile. However, this month is a month of supreme forgiveness.

Just as you possess the authority to mete out punishment, I possess the authority to bestow mercy.

During Vaishakh, I extend an extra measure of mercy to the world.”

Joining his hands in reverence, Yamraj said:

“O Vishnu! Indeed, this month is a true boon for mankind. If Vaishakh yields such immense spiritual merit, then I, too, bow down in reverence to this sacred month.”

Vishnu concluded:

“Yama, among the deities, you are the very embodiment of justice. And justice is truly complete only when it is tempered with mercy. The month of Vaishakh represents precisely that mercy.” A Change in the Atmosphere of the World

From that day forward, Yamaraj issued a directive to his messengers:

“Those who engage in holy bathing, acts of charity, the service of the sacred Tulsi plant, and the provision of drinking water during the month of Vaishakh need not be subjected to fear. They are beloved of Lord Madhav.”

The messengers of Yama, too, observed that upon the Earth, people were rising at the break of dawn to bathe in sacred rivers; they were placing earthen pots filled with cool water near wells; and they were taking solemn vows to ensure that no traveler would ever go thirsty.

In every village and every town, public water kiosks were being established.

And truly—

The gates of Hell remained silent.

The shadows of sin grew faint.

Upon the Earth, compassion, righteousness, and devotion flourished.

The Essence of the Tale

Since that time, a tradition has prevailed:

By engaging in the worship of ‘Madhav,’ holy bathing, acts of charity, and the service of providing water during the month of Vaishakh, one is liberated from the fear of Yama.

The human soul becomes light, pure, and sanctified; and its journey leads not toward the realm of sin, but toward the divine abode of the Lord.

And Yamaraj himself declares:

“The spiritual merit accrued during the month of Vaishakh touches even the Gods themselves.”
