प्राचीन काल में काशी राज्य पर राजा ब्रह्मदत्त का शासन था। वे न्यायप्रिय, विद्वान और धर्मपरायण राजा माने जाते थे। उनकी सभा में अनेक विद्वान उपस्थित रहते थे, परन्तु उनमें से सबसे अधिक सम्मानित थे उनके राजपुरोहित देवदत्त। देवदत्त अत्यंत ज्ञानी, विनम्र और सदाचारी व्यक्ति थे। राजा ब्रह्मदत्त उनका बहुत आदर करते थे और किसी भी महत्वपूर्ण निर्णय से पहले उनकी सलाह अवश्य लेते थे।

एक दिन देवदत्त के मन में एक विचार उत्पन्न हुआ। उन्होंने सोचा—“राजा मेरा इतना सम्मान करते हैं, परन्तु क्या यह सम्मान मेरे ज्ञान के कारण है या मेरे सदाचार के कारण? यदि इसका कारण जान लिया जाए तो जीवन की एक महत्वपूर्ण शिक्षा मिल सकती है।” इस विचार ने उनके मन को व्याकुल कर दिया और उन्होंने इसकी परीक्षा लेने का निश्चय किया।

एक दिन जब देवदत्त राजसभा से लौट रहे थे, तब वे राजकोष के पास से गुजरे। वहाँ स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ सुरक्षित रखी हुई थीं। उन्होंने इधर-उधर देखा और चुपचाप एक स्वर्ण मुद्रा उठाकर अपने पास रख ली। यह दृश्य वहाँ उपस्थित कोषाध्यक्ष ने देख लिया। वह अत्यंत आश्चर्यचकित हुआ। उसने मन ही मन सोचा—“देवदत्त जैसे महान और विद्वान व्यक्ति ने यदि एक मुद्रा उठाई है, तो अवश्य इसके पीछे कोई कारण होगा। शायद वे बाद में इसका उद्देश्य बता देंगे।” इसलिए उसने उस समय कुछ नहीं कहा।

अगले दिन देवदत्त फिर उसी मार्ग से लौटे और उन्होंने एक बार फिर एक स्वर्ण मुद्रा उठा ली। कोषाध्यक्ष ने यह भी देख लिया, परन्तु उसने धैर्य बनाए रखा। उसे विश्वास था कि इतने बड़े विद्वान का कोई अनुचित उद्देश्य नहीं हो सकता।

तीसरे दिन देवदत्त ने मुट्ठी भर स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ उठा लीं। अब कोषाध्यक्ष को संदेह होने लगा। उसे लगा कि यदि वह अब भी मौन रहा तो यह राजकोष के साथ अन्याय होगा। उसने तुरंत सैनिकों को बुलाया और देवदत्त को पकड़वा लिया। अगले दिन उन्हें राजा ब्रह्मदत्त की सभा में प्रस्तुत किया गया।

सभा में यह समाचार सुनकर सभी लोग आश्चर्यचकित थे। सभी के मन में यही प्रश्न था कि इतने बड़े विद्वान और धर्मात्मा व्यक्ति से ऐसा कार्य कैसे हो सकता है।

राजा ब्रह्मदत्त ने गंभीर स्वर में कहा,

“देवदत्त, आपने बहुत बड़ा अपराध किया है। आपने न केवल राजकोष से चोरी की है, बल्कि हमारी श्रद्धा को भी आहत किया है। इस अपराध के लिए आपको दंड दिया जाएगा।”

इसके बाद राजा ने आदेश दिया कि दंडस्वरूप उनकी चार उँगलियाँ काट दी जाएँ।

राजा का निर्णय सुनकर देवदत्त मुस्कुराए और शांत स्वर में बोले,

“महाराज, मैंने यह कार्य धन प्राप्त करने के लिए नहीं किया था। मैं तो केवल यह जानना चाहता था कि आपका सम्मान मेरे ज्ञान के कारण है या मेरे सदाचार के कारण। मेरा ज्ञान तो आज भी वही है जो पहले था, उसमें कोई परिवर्तन नहीं हुआ। परन्तु इन तीन दिनों में मेरा सदाचार अवश्य खंडित हुआ है, और उसी कारण आज मुझे दंड मिल रहा है। इससे स्पष्ट हो गया कि सम्मान का वास्तविक आधार सदाचार और चरित्र ही है।”

देवदत्त की बात सुनकर राजा ब्रह्मदत्त को पूरी बात समझ में आ गई। उन्हें अपने निर्णय पर पश्चाताप हुआ। उन्होंने तुरंत देवदत्त को सम्मान सहित मुक्त कर दिया और सभा में उपस्थित सभी लोगों को यह शिक्षा दी कि मनुष्य के जीवन में सदाचार का स्थान सबसे ऊँचा होता है।

इस कहानी से हमें यह शिक्षा मिलती है कि ज्ञान, धन या सौन्दर्य मनुष्य को कुछ समय के लिए सम्मान अवश्य दिला सकते हैं, परन्तु स्थायी सम्मान केवल सदाचार और उत्तम व्यवहार से ही प्राप्त होता है।

In ancient times, the Kingdom of Kashi was ruled by King Brahmadatta. He was renowned as a just, learned, and pious monarch. Many scholars graced his court, yet the most esteemed among them was his Royal Priest, Devadatta. Devadatta was a man of profound wisdom, humility, and virtue. King Brahmadatta held him in the highest regard and invariably sought his counsel before making any significant decision.

One day, a thought arose in Devadatta’s mind. He mused, "The King holds me in such high esteem; but is this respect due to my knowledge, or is it due to my virtuous conduct? If I could discover the true reason behind this, I might gain a profound lesson for life." This thought unsettled his mind, and he resolved to put it to the test.

One day, as Devadatta was returning from the royal court, he passed by the royal treasury. Inside, gold coins were kept securely guarded. He glanced around to ensure no one was watching, then quietly picked up a single gold coin and slipped it into his possession. The royal treasurer, who was present there, witnessed this scene. He was utterly astonished. He thought to himself, "If a man as great and learned as Devadatta has taken a coin, there must surely be a reason behind it. Perhaps he will reveal his purpose later." Consequently, he chose to remain silent at that moment.

The following day, Devadatta returned along the same path and once again picked up a gold coin. The treasurer observed this as well, yet he maintained his composure. He remained convinced that a scholar of such eminence could harbor no improper intentions.

On the third day, however, Devadatta scooped up a handful of gold coins. At this point, the treasurer began to harbor suspicions. He felt that if he were to remain silent any longer, it would constitute a grave injustice to the royal treasury. He immediately summoned the guards and had Devadatta apprehended. The very next day, Devadatta was brought before King Brahmadatta’s court.

Upon hearing this news in the assembly, everyone was left in utter bewilderment. A single question weighed heavily on everyone's mind: How could a man of such immense learning and piety commit such an act? King Brahmadatta spoke in a grave tone:

“Devadatta, you have committed a grave offense. You have not only stolen from the royal treasury but have also deeply wounded our trust. For this crime, you shall be punished.”

Thereupon, the King ordered that, as punishment, four of his fingers be severed.

Upon hearing the King’s verdict, Devadatta smiled and spoke in a calm voice:

“Your Majesty, I did not undertake this act to acquire wealth. I merely wished to discover whether the respect accorded to me stemmed from my knowledge or from my virtue. My knowledge remains precisely as it was before; it has undergone no change. However, over these past three days, my virtue has indeed been compromised—and it is for this very reason that I am being punished today. This has made it abundantly clear that the true foundation of respect lies in virtue and character alone.”

Upon hearing Devadatta’s words, King Brahmadatta grasped the full significance of the matter. He felt deep remorse for his decision. He immediately released Devadatta with honor and imparted a lesson to everyone present in the court: that in a human life, virtue holds the highest place of all.

This story teaches us that while knowledge, wealth, or beauty may indeed garner a person respect for a time, lasting respect is attained solely through virtue and exemplary conduct.
