अरे पापा आप अभी तक तैयार नहीं हुए। बैग कहां है? आपका। चलिए मैं पैक करती हूं।
पापा ने एक उदास नजर पिंकी पर डाली पिंकी बेटा मैं कहीं नहीं जाऊंगा। ये घर तेरी मां की यादों से भरा हुआ है।
पिंकी की आंखे भर आई पापा मां को गये छह महीने हो गए हैं आपकी तबियत भी ठीक नहीं है ऐसे में मैं आपको अकेले नहीं छोड़ सकती। आप मेरे घर चल रहे हैं मेरे साथ।
बेटा मैं तेरे घर कैसे रह सकता हूं? बेटी के घर का तो लोग पानी तक नहीं पीते हैं। फिर वहां तेरे सास ससुर भी हैं । उन्हें मेरा वहां रहना कैसे अच्छा लग सकता है।आखिर हूं तो मैं एक बाहरी आदमी।
पापा वो लोग ऐसे नहीं हैं वो मेरे साथ कितने अच्छे हैं। पिंकी पापा का हाथ अपने हाथ में लेकर बैठ गई। पिछली बार आपको शुगर का अटैक आया था।कितनी मुश्किल से ठीक.. कहते हुए ,उसकी आंखों में आंसू आ गए। पापा मैं आपकी इकलौती बेटी हूं।आपकी सारी जिम्मेदारी अब मेरी है। बस मैं और कुछ नहीं सुनुंगी।
पापा सोच में डूब गए अनिल (दामाद) जी ने तो एक बार भी नहीं कहा। हां ये जरूर कहा था कि पापा हम आते रहेंगे आपसे मिलने।
पिंकी तूने दामाद जी को पूछा।
अरे पापा उनकी और मेरी राय अलग थोडे़ ही है।
पिंकी पापा को लेकर अपने घर आ गई। उसके सास-ससुर समधी को देख कर चौंक गए अनिल ने भी पैर छुए और कहा अच्छा किया पापा जो आप कुछ दिन के लिए यहां आ गए।
पापा रहने तो लगे पर उन्हें लग रहा था कि शायद दामाद और उनके माता-पिता उनके यहां आने से खुश नहीं हैं।
एक दिन पापा लॉन में घूम रहे थे कि अचानक उन्हें अनिल की आवाज सुनाई दी।
पिंकी पापा यहां पर कब तक रहेंगे।
ऐसा क्यों पूछ रहे हैं आप। वहां पर उनका है ही कौन और उनकी तबीयत भी ठीक नहीं है।
अरे तुम समझ नहीं रही हो हमें तो अपने घर में ही अजीब सा महसूस होने लगा है।
हमें किसे? अच्छा मम्मी-पापा जी ने कहा आपसे।
अब तुम जो भी समझो। अरे वहां पर उनकी अच्छी व्यवस्था कर सकती हो।
पापा और नहीं सुन सके कांपते हुए कदमों से वापस आ गए।
अगले दिन जाने की तैयारी करने लगे।
पिंकी बोली पापा ऐसे कैसे जायेंगे आप।
पापा उसे डांटने लगे पिंकी मेरी फिजूल में चिंता मत करो अपने पति और सास ससुर का ध्यान रखो बेटा मैं अपना ख्याल खुद रख सकता हूं।पिंकी बेटा बहुत दिन हो गए अब जाना चाहिेए।
मैं अनिल से बात करती हूं। अभी आपकी तबियत ठीक नहीं है। जब आप ठीक हो जाएंगे तो मैं आपको खुद छोड़ आऊंगी।
नहीं पिंकी देखो मैं तुमसे नाराज हो जाऊंगा।
पिंकी नाश्ता बनाने लगी।सोच रही थी कि पापा को किसी ने कुछ तो कहा है।
नाश्ता करने के बाद उसने कहा आज पापा जा रहे हैं। वह अपने सास, ससुर और अनिल का चेहरा देख रही थी कि उनके चेहरे पर चमक आ गई थी।
तभी उसने कहा कि मैंने एक फैसला किया है कि पापा इतनी बड़ी कोठी में अकेले कैसे रहेंगे। सोच रही हूं कि गरीब बच्चों के लिए उसमें एक छोटा-सा स्कूल खोल दिया जाय। पापा और मैं मिल कर एक ट्रस्ट बनाएंगे ताकि पापा के बाद भी स्कूल चलता रहे। और पापा आपकी वो जमीन पडी़ है उसे बेच देते हैं दो करोड़ की वैल्यू है उसकी उसे ट्रस्ट के फंड में जमा कर देंगे उसके इंट्रेस्ट से उन गरीब बच्चों की फीस में मदद करेंगे जो कुछ करना चाहते हैं उसमें योगदान देंगे। बाकी आपकी पेंशन और फंड आपके लिए बहुत है।
पापा मैं आज से ही इस पर काम शुरू करती हूं।
पापा हतप्रभ हो कर उसे देख रहे थे।
अनिल की आंखों के सामने तो अंधेरा छा गया उसके मम्मी पापा का मुंह खुला रह गया।
मन ही मन हिसाब करने लगा पांच करोड़ की कोठी दो करोड़ की जमीन और फंड इतना बड़ा नुकसान।
जब पिंकी पापा को छोड़कर लौटी तो अनिल उसका इंतजार कर रहा था।
ये सब क्या बकवास कर रही थी तुम।
पिंकी मुस्कराई और बोली ये बकवास नहीं सच है। ऐसा मैं इसलिए करूंगी कि किसी को भी मेरे पिता की मौत का इंतजार न रहे। पापा ने मेरी शादी पर ऐसी कौन सी चीज है जो नहीं दी ।
अनिल गुस्से से बोला ये तो उनका फर्ज था।
फर्ज सिर्फ लड़की के बाप का होता है क्योंकि उसने लड़की पैदा करने की गलती की है। मैं अपने पापा की इकलौती बेटी हूं। तो क्या मेरा फर्ज नहीं था उनकी देखभाल करने का, वो भी ऐसे वक्त में जब उनकी तबीयत ठीक नहीं है और उन्हें सहारे की जरूरत है। माफी चाहती हूं कि उनके कुछ दिन यहां रहने से सबको तकलीफ हुई।

“Dad, you’re still not ready? Where is your bag? Come on, I’ll pack it for you.”
Dad looked at Pinky with sadness and said, “Pinky बेटा, I’m not going anywhere. This house is filled with your mother’s memories.”
Pinky’s eyes welled up. “Dad, it’s been six months since Mom passed away. Your health is not good either. I can’t leave you alone like this. You’re coming with me to my house.”
“My child, how can I live in your house? People don’t even drink water at their daughter’s home. And your in-laws live there too—how will they feel about me staying there? After all, I’m an outsider.”
“Dad, they are not like that. They are very kind to me,” Pinky said, holding his hand. “Last time you had a sugar attack, it was so difficult…” Her eyes filled with tears. “Dad, I am your only daughter. Now I am responsible for you. I won’t listen to anything else.”
Dad fell into deep thought. Anil (my son-in-law) never insisted… he only said, ‘Dad, we’ll keep visiting you.’
“Pinky, did you ask Anil?”
“Dad, how can our opinions be different?”
Pinky brought her father home. Her in-laws were surprised to see him. Anil greeted him respectfully and said, “It’s good that you’ve come here for a few days, Dad.”
Though Dad stayed, he felt that perhaps Anil and his parents were not happy with his presence.
One day, while walking in the lawn, he overheard Anil’s voice:
“How long will Pinky’s father stay here?”
“Why are you asking that? He has no one there, and his health isn’t good,” Pinky replied.
“You don’t understand… I’ve started feeling uncomfortable in my own house.”
“We? Who is ‘we’? Did Mom and Dad say something?”
“Think whatever you want. You could arrange something better for him there.”
Dad couldn’t hear any more. With trembling steps, he returned to his room.
The next day, he started preparing to leave.
“Dad, how can you just leave like this?” Pinky asked.
He scolded her gently, “Don’t worry about me unnecessarily. Take care of your husband and in-laws. I can take care of myself. It’s been many days—I should go now.”
“I’ll talk to Anil. Your health isn’t good yet. Once you’re better, I’ll personally drop you,” she said.
“No, Pinky. If you don’t listen, I’ll be upset.”
Pinky went to prepare breakfast, thinking someone must have said something to him.
After breakfast, she announced, “Dad is leaving today.” She looked at her husband and in-laws—and noticed a spark of relief on their faces.
Then she said, “I’ve made a decision. How can Dad live alone in such a big house? I’m thinking of opening a small school there for poor children. Dad and I will create a trust so the school continues even after him. And Dad, we’ll sell your land—it’s worth two crores—and deposit it in the trust. The interest will help educate children who want to do something in life. Your pension and savings are more than enough for you.”
“Dad, I’ll start working on this from today.”
Dad stood there, stunned.
Anil was shocked, and his parents were speechless. In his mind, he started calculating—a five-crore house, two-crore land… such a huge loss!
When Pinky returned after dropping her father, Anil was waiting.
“What nonsense were you talking about?” he asked angrily.
Pinky smiled. “It’s not nonsense—it’s the truth. I’m doing this so no one waits for my father’s death. Tell me, what did he not give during my marriage?”
“That was his duty!” Anil snapped.
“Duty? Is it only a girl’s father’s duty because he ‘made the mistake’ of having a daughter?” she replied firmly. “I am his only child. Don’t I have a duty to care for him—especially when he’s unwell and needs support? I’m sorry if his staying here caused inconvenience.”
“I never stopped you from fulfilling your duties toward your parents. I have never failed in my responsibilities toward my in-laws either. You cannot stop me from fulfilling my duty toward my father.”
Her voice was steady and strong. Anil stood silent.
Every child has a duty to care not only for their own parents but also for their in-laws, so that the bond between two families remains strong. But this doesn’t always happen. A daughter often cannot keep her parents with her, as it may trouble her in-laws—yet they may still desire her parents’ property.
Whether parents are of a son or a daughter, they have a fundamental right to love, care, and respect in their old age—and it is the moral duty of children to provide it.
