वनवास का समय था। चित्रकूट का शांत और पावन वन—जहाँ मर्यादा, संयम और धर्म के साथ श्रीराम और माता सीता जीवन व्यतीत कर रहे थे। उसी शांत वन में एक ऐसा प्रसंग घटित हुआ, जिसने युगों के लिए यह सत्य स्थापित कर दिया कि अपराध का कोई मापदंड नहीं होता—अपराध, अपराध ही होता है।
एक दिन माता सीता कुटिया के बाहर विश्राम कर रही थीं। तभी देवराज इंद्र का पुत्र जयंत, अहंकारवश कौए का रूप धारण कर वहाँ आया। उसने माता सीता के चरणों में चोंच मारी। रक्त बह निकला। यह केवल शरीर पर लगा घाव नहीं था, यह नारी की मर्यादा पर किया गया आघात था।
जब श्रीराम ने यह दृश्य देखा, तो उनका क्रोध व्यक्तिगत नहीं था—वह धर्म का क्रोध था। उन्होंने कोई शस्त्र नहीं उठाया। उन्होंने केवल एक तृण उठाकर ब्रह्मास्त्र का संकल्प किया। वही तृण ब्रह्मबाण बन गया और कौए के रूप में जयंत का पीछा करने लगा।
जयंत तीनों लोकों में भटका—देवलोक, ब्रह्मलोक, पितृलोक—पर कहीं भी उसे शरण नहीं मिली। अंततः वह थक-हारकर श्रीराम के चरणों में गिर पड़ा।
श्रीराम ने कहा—
“ब्रह्मास्त्र निष्फल नहीं जाता। दंड अवश्य मिलेगा।”
अपने प्राणों की रक्षा के लिए जयंत ने स्वयं अपनी एक आँख अर्पित कर दी। उसकी एक आँख नष्ट हुई, पर जीवन बच गया। उसी दिन से कौआ काना माना जाने लगा। यह केवल दंड नहीं था, यह स्मृति थी—कि नारी के अपमान का अपराध कभी क्षम्य नहीं होता।
पर यह कथा यहीं समाप्त नहीं होती।
जयंत के भीतर परिवर्तन आया। देवपुत्र होने का गर्व टूट गया। उसने जाना कि धर्म के सामने पद, शक्ति और कुल—सब तुच्छ हैं। श्रीराम ने उसे केवल दंड नहीं दिया, उसे बोध दिया। माता सीता ने करुणा दिखाई, पर अपराध को उचित नहीं ठहराया। चित्रकूट का वन फिर शांत हो गया, पर उस शांति में एक चेतावनी स्थायी हो गई—मर्यादा भंग करने वाला चाहे कोई भी हो, दंड से नहीं बच सकता।
युग बदला। वही कौआ, वही चोंच, वही उड़ान—पर परिस्थिति भिन्न थी।

एक दिन श्रीकृष्ण भोजन कर रहे थे। तभी एक कौआ उनके हाथ से रोटी लेकर उड़ गया। लोगों को यह दृश्य हास्यास्पद लगा, वे हँस पड़े। पर श्रीकृष्ण की आँखों से आँसू बह निकले।
न कोई बाण, न कोई क्रोध—केवल करुणा।
लोगों ने आश्चर्य से पूछा—
“जो स्वयं माखन चुराते हैं, वे आज रोटी जाने पर क्यों रो रहे हैं?”
श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा—
“यह चोरी आनंद से नहीं, भूख से हुई है। जहाँ भूख होती है, वहाँ पहले पीड़ा होती है, अपराध बाद में। यह कौआ दोषी नहीं—यह समाज की असफलता का संकेत है।”
कृष्ण इसलिए रोए, क्योंकि किसी जीव को विवश होकर छीनना पड़ा।
यहीं धर्म के दो स्वरूप प्रकट होते हैं—
राम के सामने जो आया, वह अहंकार से जन्मा अपराध था—इसलिए दंड अनिवार्य था।
कृष्ण के सामने जो आया, वह भूख से उपजा कृत्य था—इसलिए करुणा स्वाभाविक थी।
कौआ दोनों कथाओं में उपस्थित है—
एक स्थान पर नारी अपमान की चेतावनी बनकर,
दूसरे स्थान पर भूख और उपेक्षा का प्रतीक बनकर।
इन कथाओं का सार एक ही है—
अपराध को तर्क से ढका नहीं जा सकता,
और पीड़ा को दंड से मिटाया नहीं जा सकता।
जहाँ अपराध है, वहाँ न्याय आवश्यक है।
जहाँ भूख है, वहाँ करुणा अनिवार्य है।
और समाज तभी सच्चे अर्थों में धर्मशील बनता है, जब वह दोनों में भेद करना सीख लेता है।
अपराध तो अपराध है—
पर हर कृत्य को समझने के लिए विवेक चाहिए।
यही राम का न्याय है,
और यही कृष्ण की करुणा है।

It was the time of exile. The serene and sacred forest of Chitrakoot—where Lord Rama and Mother Sita were living a life of dignity, discipline, and righteousness. In that peaceful forest, an incident occurred that established for ages the truth that there is no scale for wrongdoing—an offense is simply an offense.
One day, Mother Sita was resting outside the hut. At that moment, Jayant, the son of Indra, filled with arrogance, took the form of a crow and came there. He pecked at Mother Sita’s feet, causing blood to flow. This was not merely a physical injury; it was an attack on the dignity of a woman.
When Lord Rama saw this, his anger was not personal—it was the anger of righteousness. He did not pick up any weapon. He simply lifted a blade of grass and invoked the Brahmastra. That very blade of grass turned into a divine missile and began chasing Jayant, who was in the form of a crow.
Jayant wandered across all three worlds—heaven, Brahma’s realm, and the realm of ancestors—but found no refuge anywhere. Finally, exhausted, he fell at the feet of Lord Rama.
Lord Rama said,
“A Brahmastra never goes in vain. Punishment is inevitable.”
To save his life, Jayant offered one of his eyes. One eye was destroyed, but his life was spared. Since that day, the crow is believed to have one defective eye. This was not just a punishment; it was a reminder—that insulting a woman is never forgivable.
But the story does not end here.
A transformation occurred within Jayant. His pride of being a divine being shattered. He realized that before righteousness, status, power, and lineage are insignificant. Lord Rama did not just punish him; He gave him awareness. Mother Sita showed compassion, yet did not justify the wrongdoing. The forest of Chitrakoot became peaceful again, but within that peace remained a lasting warning—that whoever violates dignity cannot escape punishment.
Ages passed. The same crow, the same beak, the same flight—but the circumstances were different.

One day, Lord Krishna was eating when a crow flew away with a piece of bread from His hand. People found the scene amusing and laughed. But tears flowed from Krishna’s eyes.
No arrow, no anger—only compassion.
People asked in surprise,
“The one who Himself steals butter, why is He crying over a piece of bread?”
Krishna replied,
“This act was not done out of joy, but out of hunger. Where there is hunger, there is suffering first, and wrongdoing comes later. This crow is not guilty—it is a sign of society’s failure.”
Krishna wept because a living being was forced to snatch food out of desperation.
Here, two forms of dharma are revealed—
What appeared before Rama was an offense born of arrogance—therefore punishment was necessary.
What appeared before Krishna was an act born of hunger—therefore compassion was natural.
The crow appears in both stories—
in one, as a warning against the insult of a woman,
in the other, as a symbol of hunger and neglect.
The essence of these stories is one—
wrongdoing cannot be justified with arguments,
and suffering cannot be removed through punishment.
Where there is wrongdoing, justice is necessary.
Where there is hunger, compassion is essential.
And a society becomes truly righteous only when it learns to distinguish between the two.
An offense is an offense—
but understanding every act requires wisdom.
This is the justice of Rama,
and this is the compassion of Krishna.
