एक बार प्रतापी राजा भोज के दरबार में एक अत्यंत गूढ़ सवाल उठा: "ऐसा कौन सा कुआँ है जिसमें गिरने के बाद आदमी कभी बाहर नहीं निकल पाता?" दरबार के बड़े-बड़े विद्वान और नीतिज्ञ मौन रह गए। अंत में राजा भोज ने राज-पंडित की ओर देखा और आदेश दिया, "सात दिनों के भीतर इस प्रश्न का उत्तर लेकर आओ। यदि असफल रहे, तो अब तक दिया गया सारा मान-सम्मान और धन वापस ले लिया जाएगा और तुम्हें राज्य से निर्वासित कर दिया जाएगा।"
पंडित की निराशा और गड़रिए से भेंट
छह दिन बीत गए, पंडित जी ने सारे शास्त्र छान मारे पर उत्तर नहीं मिला। अपनी प्रतिष्ठा खोने के डर से वे जंगल की ओर निकल पड़े। वहां उनकी भेंट एक साधारण गड़रिए से हुई। गड़रिए ने पूछा, "पंडित जी, आप तो राजा के दुलारे हैं, फिर आपके चेहरे पर यह उदासी कैसी?" पंडित जी ने पहले तो उसे तुच्छ समझकर अनदेखा किया, पर गड़रिए के बार-बार पूछने पर उन्होंने अपना प्रश्न बता दिया। गड़रिया बोला, "पंडित जी, मैं सत्संगी हूँ, इस प्रश्न का जवाब मेरे पास है, पर आपको मेरी शर्तें माननी होंगी।"
लालच की अग्नि और गड़रिए की शर्तें
गड़रिए ने कहा, "जवाब के लिए पहले आपको मेरा चेला बनना होगा।" निर्वासित होने के डर से पंडित जी का अहंकार झुक गया और वे तैयार हो गए। फिर गड़रिए ने भेड़ का दूध पीने को कहा। पंडित जी हिचकिचाए कि इससे उनकी बुद्धि मारी जाएगी, पर स्वार्थ के आगे वे झुक गए। गड़रिया यहीं नहीं रुका, उसने कहा, "पहले मैं दूध को झूठा करूँगा, फिर तुम्हें पीना होगा।" ब्राह्मण होकर झूठा दूध पीना महापाप था, पर 'पारस पत्थर' पाने के लोभ में पंडित जी ने यह भी स्वीकार कर लिया।
अंतिम परीक्षा और ज्ञान का प्रकाश
अंत में गड़रिए ने जमीन पर पड़ी एक 'मानव खोपड़ी' (कंकाल) की ओर इशारा किया और कहा, "अब मैं इस खोपड़ी में दूध दुहूँगा, इसे कुत्ते को चटवाऊंगा और फिर तुम्हें पीना होगा, तभी पारस मिलेगा।" पंडित जी पारस के लोभ में और अपनी जान बचाने के लिए इस घृणित कार्य के लिए भी तैयार हो गए।
तभी गड़रिए ने उन्हें रोक दिया और कहा, "पंडित जी, रुकिए! आपको आपके प्रश्न का जवाब मिल गया है। यही तो वह कुआँ है—'लोभ और तृष्णा' का कुआँ! जिसमें इंसान गिरता ही चला जाता है और कभी बाहर नहीं निकल पाता। जैसे आप उस पारस पत्थर को पाने के लिए अपनी मर्यादा, धर्म और विवेक सब भूलकर इस लोभ रूपी कुएं में गिरते चले गए। हम सभी सांसारिक मायाजाल में 'थोड़ा और' पाने की चाह में अपने जीवन का असली उद्देश्य भूल जाते हैं।"

The Mystery in the Court of King Bhoj
Once, in the illustrious court of King Bhoj, a profound and puzzling question was raised: "Which is that well from which a man, once fallen, can never get out?" The scholars, ministers, and intellectuals of the court sat in silence; no one could provide a satisfactory answer. Finally, King Bhoj turned to his Royal Pandit and commanded, "I give you seven days to find the answer. If you fail, all the wealth and honors bestowed upon you will be reclaimed, and you shall be exiled from this kingdom."
The Desperate Search
Six days passed in agonizing silence. The Pandit searched through every scripture but found no answer. Despondent and fearing for his future, he wandered deep into the forest. There, he met a simple shepherd tending to his flock. Seeing the Pandit’s withered face, the shepherd asked, "O Great Pandit, you are the favorite of the King, why does such sorrow cloud your face?" Initially, the Pandit brushed him off, thinking a lowly shepherd could never help him. But the shepherd persisted, "I am a seeker of truth myself; perhaps I have the answer you seek."
The Shepherd’s Conditions
When the Pandit revealed the question, the shepherd smiled and said, "I have the answer, but to receive it, you must follow my conditions. First, you must become my disciple." Driven by the fear of exile, the Pandit’s ego faltered, and he agreed. The shepherd then said, "Now, drink this sheep's milk." The Pandit hesitated, "If a Brahmin drinks sheep’s milk, his intellect will perish!" The shepherd shrugged, "Then go without the answer." Fearful, the Pandit agreed. Then the shepherd pushed further, "First, I will taste the milk to make it 'Jhutha' (defiled), and only then you shall drink." The Pandit was horrified but, blinded by his need, he eventually surrendered.
The Final Test and the Revelation
Finally, the shepherd pointed to a human skull lying on the ground. "I shall pour the milk into this skull, let a dog lick it first, and then you must drink it to get the 'Paras' (Philosopher’s Stone) I promised." The Pandit, completely consumed by the greed for the magical stone and the desire to save his status, prepared himself for this ultimate degradation.
At that moment, the shepherd stopped him and said, "Stop! You have found your answer. This is the well—the well of Greed (Lobha) and Desires (Trishna). It is a pit so deep that a man falls further and further into it, sacrificing his religion, his dignity, and his wisdom just for 'a little more.' You were willing to drink from a skull just for a piece of stone. This is the only well from which no man ever truly returns."
