ऋषि माण्डव्य और धर्मराज का श्राप: कर्मफल की अनूठी कथा
पौराणिक काल में ऋषि माण्डव्य अपनी कठोर तपस्या के लिए प्रसिद्ध थे। एक बार कुछ चोरों ने राजा का धन उनकी कुटिया में छिपा दिया। अनजाने में सैनिकों ने ऋषि को ही चोर समझ लिया और राजा के आदेश पर उन्हें सूली पर चढ़ा दिया गया। सिद्ध योगी होने के कारण कई दिनों तक सूली पर रहने के बाद भी उनके प्राण नहीं निकले। जब राजा को अपनी भूल का अहसास हुआ, तो उन्होंने क्षमा मांगी। ऋषि ने राजा को तो क्षमा कर दिया, पर वे इस अन्याय का कारण जानने स्वयं यमलोक जा पहुँचे।
ऋषि ने क्रोध में धर्मराज से पूछा, "मेरे किस पाप के कारण मुझे यह भीषण कष्ट मिला?" धर्मराज ने उत्तर दिया, "जब आप १२ वर्ष के थे, तब आपने एक पतंगे को सींक चुभोई थी, यह उसी का फल है।" ऋषि माण्डव्य क्रोधित हो उठे और कहा, "शास्त्रों के अनुसार १२ वर्ष की आयु तक बालक को धर्म-अधर्म का ज्ञान नहीं होता। अज्ञानता में किए गए कृत्य का इतना कठोर दंड देकर तुमने मर्यादा तोड़ी है!"
ऋषि ने धर्मराज को श्राप दिया कि उन्हें मृत्युलोक में दासी के गर्भ से जन्म लेना पड़ेगा। इसी श्राप के कारण यमराज ने महात्मा विदुर के रूप में जन्म लिया। दासी पुत्र होने के बाद भी, उनकी 'विदुर नीति' और अतुलनीय ज्ञान के आगे समस्त हस्तिनापुर नतमस्तक रहता था।
शिक्षा: कर्म का विधान अटल है, परंतु न्याय हमेशा विवेक और शास्त्र की मर्यादा में होना चाहिए।

The Legend of Rishi Mandavya and the Curse of Dharmaraj
In ancient times, there lived a great ascetic named Rishi Mandavya, whose penance was so powerful that even the gods respected him. One day, while he was in deep meditation, some thieves hid stolen royal treasure in his hermitage and fled. The king's soldiers, finding the treasure near the silent sage, mistook him for the leader of the thieves. Without investigation, the King ordered him to be impaled on a Suli (a sharp spike).
Despite being on the spike for days, the sage did not die due to his yogic powers. Realizing his mistake, the King begged for forgiveness. The sage forgave the King but sought an answer from the Source of Justice itself. He reached the court of Dharmaraj (Yama) and asked, "For what sin was I given such a horrific punishment?"
Yama replied, "When you were twelve, you pierced an insect's tail with a sharp straw. This is the karmic fruit of that pain." Furious, the sage thundered, "A child under twelve cannot distinguish between right and wrong! You have violated the Shastras by giving an extreme punishment for an ignorant act." Mandavya then cursed Yama to be born on Earth in a human womb. Thus, Yama was born as Mahatma Vidur—the wisest advisor of the Mahabharata—whose intellect was revered by kings and warriors alike.
Moral: Even the Gods are bound by the Shastras, and true wisdom (Vidur Niti) transcends the boundaries of birth and status.
