लक्ष्मी नारायण बहुत भोला लड़का था। वह प्रतिदिन रात में सोने से पहले अपनी दादी से कहानी सुनाने को कहता था। 

दादी उसे नागलोक, पाताल, गन्धर्व लोक, चन्द्रलोक, सूर्यलोक आदि की कहानियाँ सुनाया करती थी। 

एक दिन दादी ने उसे स्वर्ग का वर्णन सुनाया। स्वर्ग का वर्णन इतना सुन्दर था कि उसे सुनकर लक्ष्मी नारायण स्वर्ग देखने के लिये हठ करने लगा।

दादी ने उसे बहुत समझाया कि मनुष्य स्वर्ग नहीं देख सकता, किन्तु लक्ष्मीनारायण रोने लगा। रोते- रोते ही वह सो गया।

उसे स्वप्न में दिखायी पड़ा कि एक चम- चम चमकते देवता उसके पास खड़े होकर कह रहे हैं-  बच्चे ! स्वर्ग देखने के लिये मूल्य देना पड़ता है। 

.

तुम सरकस देखने जाते हो तो टिकट देते हो न ? स्वर्ग देखने के लिये भी तुम्हें उसी प्रकार रुपये देने पड़ेंगे।

.

स्वप्न में लक्ष्मीनारायण सोचने लगा कि मैं दादी से रुपये माँगूँगा। लेकिन देवता ने कहा- स्वर्ग में तुम्हारे रुपये नहीं चलते। यहाँ तो भलाई और पुण्य कर्मों का रुपया चलता है।

अच्छा, काम करोगे तो एक रुपया इसमें आ जायगा और जब कोई बुरा काम करोगे तो एक रुपया इसमें से उड़ जायगा। जब यह डिबिया भर जायगी, तब तुम स्वर्ग देख सकोगे।

.

जब लक्ष्मीनारायण की नींद टूटी तो उसने अपने सिरहाने सचमुच एक डिबिया देखी।

.

डिबिया लेकर वह बड़ा प्रसन्न हुआ। उस दिन उसकी दादी ने उसे एक पैसा दिया। पैसा लेकर वह घर से निकला। 

.

एक रोगी भिखारी उससे पैसा माँगने लगा। लक्ष्मीनारायण भिखारी को बिना पैसा दिये भाग जाना चाहता था, इतने में उसने अपने अध्यापक को सामने से आते देखा। 

.

उसके अध्यापक उदार लड़कों की बहुत प्रशंसा किया करते थे। उन्हें देखकर लक्ष्मीनारायण ने भिखारी को पैसा दे दिया। अध्यापक ने उसकी पीठ ठोंकी और प्रशंसा की।

.

घर लौटकर लक्ष्मीनारायण ने वह डिबिया खोली, किन्तु वह खाली पड़ी थी। इस बात से लक्ष्मी नारायण को बहुत दुःख हुआ। 

.

वह रोते- रोते सो गया। सपने में उसे वही देवता फिर दिखायी पड़े और बोले- तुमने अध्यापक से प्रशंसा पाने के लिये पैसा दिया था, सो प्रशंसा मिल गयी। 

.

अब रोते क्यों हो ? किसी लाभ की आशा से जो अच्छा काम किया जाता है, वह तो व्यापार है, वह पुण्य थोड़े ही है।

.

दूसरे दिन लक्ष्मीनारायण को उसकी दादी ने दो आने पैसे दिये। पैसे लेकर उसने बाजार जाकर दो संतरे खरीदे। 

.

उसका साथी मोतीलाल बीमार था। बाजार से लौटते समय वह अपने मित्र को देखने उसके घर चला गया। 

.

मोतीलाल को देखने उसके घर वैद्य आये थे। वैद्य जी ने दवा देकर मोती लाल की माता से कहा- इसे आज संतरे का रस देना। 

.

मोतीलाल की माता बहुत गरीब थी। वह रोने लगी और बोली- ‘मैं मजदूरी करके पेट भरती हूँ। इस समय बेटे की बीमारी में कई दिन से काम करने नहीं जा सकी। मेरे पास संतरे खरीदने के लिये एक भी पैसा नहीं है।’

.

लक्ष्मीनारायण ने अपने दोनों संतरे मोतीलाल की माँ को दिये। वह लक्ष्मीनारायण को आशीर्वाद देने लगी। 

.

घर आकर जब लक्ष्मीनारायण ने अपनी डिबिया खोली तो उसमें दो रुपये चमक रहे थे।

.

एक दिन लक्ष्मीनारायण खेल में लगा था। उसकी छोटी बहिन वहाँ आयी और उसके खिलौनों को उठाने लगी। लक्ष्मीनारायण ने उसे रोका। जब वह न मानी तो उसने उसे पीट दिया। 

.

बेचारी लड़की रोने लगी। इस बार जब उसने डिबिया खोली तो देखा कि उसके पहले के इकट्ठे कई रुपये उड़ गये हैं। अब उसे बड़ा पश्चाताप हुआ। उसने आगे कोई बुरा काम न करने का पक्का निश्चय कर लिया।

.

मनुष्य जैसे काम करता है, वैसा उसका स्वभाव हो जाता है। जो बुरे काम करता है, उसका स्वभाव बुरा हो जाता है। उसे फिर बुरा काम करने में ही आनन्द आता है।

.

जो अच्छा काम करता है, उसका स्वभाव अच्छा हो जाता है। उसे बुरा काम करने की बात भी बुरी लगती है। 

.

लक्ष्मीनारायण पहले रुपये के लोभ से अच्छा काम करता था। धीरे- धीरे उसका स्वभाव ही अच्छा काम करने का हो गया। 

.

अच्छा काम करते- करते उसकी डिबिया रुपयों से भर गयी। स्वर्ग देखने की आशा से प्रसन्न होता, उस डिबिया को लेकर वह अपने बगीचे में पहुँचा।

.

लक्ष्मीनारायण ने देखा कि बगीचे में पेड़ के नीचे बैठा हुआ एक बूढ़ा साधु रो रहा है। वह दौड़ता हुआ साधु के पास गया और बोला- बाबा ! आप क्यों रो रहे है ?

.

साधु बोला- बेटा जैसी डिबिया तुम्हारे हाथ में है, वैसी ही एक डिबिया मेरे पास थी। बहुत दिन परिश्रम करके मैंने उसे रुपयों से भरा था। 

.

बड़ी आशा थी कि उसके रुपयों से स्वर्ग देखूँगा, किन्तु आज गंगा जी में स्नान करते समय वह डिबिया पानी में गिर गयी।

.

लक्ष्मी नारायण ने कहा- बाबा ! आप रोओ मत। मेरी डिबिया भी भरी हुई है। आप इसे ले लो।

.

साधु बोला- तुमने इसे बड़े परिश्रम से भरा है, इसे देने से तुम्हें दुःख होगा।

.

लक्ष्मी नारायण ने कहा- मुझे दुःख नहीं होगा बाबा ! मैं तो लड़का हूँ। मुझे तो अभी बहुत दिन जीना है। मैं तो ऐसी कई डिबिया रुपये इकट्ठे कर सकता हुँ। आप बूढ़े हो गये हैं। आप मेरी डिबिया ले लीजिये।

.

साधु ने डिबिया लेकर लक्ष्मीनारायण के नेत्रों पर हाथ फेर दिया। लक्ष्मीनारायण के नेत्र बंद हो गये। उसे स्वर्ग दिखायी पड़ने लगा।

.

ऐसा सुन्दर स्वर्ग कि दादी ने जो स्वर्ग का वर्णन किया था, वह वर्णन तो स्वर्ग के एक कोने का भी ठीक वर्णन नहीं था।

.

जब लक्ष्मीनारायण ने नेत्र खोले तो साधु के बदले स्वप्न में दिखायी पड़ने वाला वही देवता उसके सामने प्रत्यक्ष खड़ा था। 

.

देवता ने कहा- बेटा ! जो लोग अच्छे काम करते हैं, उनका घर स्वर्ग बन जाता है। तुम इसी प्रकार जीवन में भलाई करते रहोगे तो अन्त में स्वर्ग में पहुँच जाओगे।’ देवता इतना कहकर वहीं अदृश्य हो गये।

Lakshmi Narayan was a very innocent boy. Every night, before going to sleep, he would ask his grandmother to tell him a story.

His grandmother used to tell him tales of Nagalok (the Realm of Serpents), Patal (the Underworld), Gandharva Lok (the Realm of Celestial Musicians), Chandra Lok (the Realm of the Moon), Surya Lok (the Realm of the Sun), and other such realms.

One day, his grandmother described Heaven to him. The description of Heaven was so beautiful that, upon hearing it, Lakshmi Narayan began to insist stubbornly on seeing it for himself.

His grandmother tried hard to explain to him that humans cannot see Heaven, but Lakshmi Narayan began to weep. Weeping all the while, he eventually fell asleep.

In his dream, he saw a dazzling, radiant deity standing beside him, speaking these words: "Child! There is a price to be paid to see Heaven."

"When you go to see a circus, you buy a ticket, don't you? To see Heaven, you must pay in the very same way—with currency."

In his dream, Lakshmi Narayan thought to himself, "I will ask Grandmother for money." But the deity replied, "Your money holds no value in Heaven. Here, the only currency that matters is that of kindness and virtuous deeds."

"If you perform a good deed, one coin will be added to this box; conversely, if you commit a bad deed, one coin will vanish from it. Once this little box is filled to the brim, you will be able to see Heaven."

When Lakshmi Narayan awoke, he was astonished to find a small box actually sitting right beside his pillow.

He was overjoyed to hold the box in his hands. That very day, his grandmother gave him a single coin. Clutching the coin, he stepped out of the house.

A sickly beggar approached him and asked for alms. Lakshmi Narayan intended to run away without giving the beggar anything, but just then, he spotted his teacher approaching from the opposite direction.

His teacher was known for frequently praising boys who were generous. Upon seeing him, Lakshmi Narayan handed the coin to the beggar. The teacher patted him on the back and commended him for his kindness.

Upon returning home, Lakshmi Narayan opened the box—only to find it completely empty. This discovery filled Lakshmi Narayan with deep sorrow. He fell asleep while weeping. In his dream, the same deity appeared to him once again and said, "You gave money to the teacher solely to gain his praise; well, you received that praise.

Why are you weeping now? Any good deed performed with the expectation of some personal gain is merely a transaction—it is certainly not an act of true virtue."

.

The next day, Lakshminarayan’s grandmother gave him two *annas*. Taking the money, he went to the market and bought two oranges.

.

His friend, Motilal, was ill. On his way back from the market, Lakshminarayan stopped by his friend's house to visit him.

.

A physician had come to examine Motilal. After administering the medicine, the physician said to Motilal’s mother, "Give him some orange juice today."

.

Motilal’s mother was very poor. She began to weep and said, "I earn my livelihood through manual labor. Due to my son's illness, I haven't been able to go to work for several days now. I do not have a single penny to buy oranges."

.

Lakshminarayan handed both of his oranges to Motilal’s mother. She began to shower her blessings upon him.

.

Upon returning home, when Lakshminarayan opened his small box, he found two shining rupees inside.

.

One day, Lakshminarayan was engrossed in play. His younger sister came over and began picking up his toys. Lakshminarayan stopped her. When she refused to listen, he struck her.

.

The poor girl burst into tears. This time, when he opened his box, he discovered that the several rupees he had previously saved had vanished. He was filled with deep remorse. He resolved firmly never to commit another wrongful act again.

.

A person's character is shaped by the deeds they perform. One who engages in evil acts develops an evil nature; thereafter, they find pleasure only in doing evil.

.

Conversely, one who performs good deeds develops a virtuous nature; they find even the mere thought of doing evil to be repulsive.

. Initially, Lakshminarayan performed good deeds out of a greed for money. Gradually, however, doing good became his very nature.

.

Through his continuous good deeds, his small box eventually filled up with money. Filled with joy at the prospect of seeing Heaven, he took the box and headed to his garden.

.

In the garden, Lakshminarayan noticed an elderly ascetic sitting beneath a tree and weeping. He ran over to the ascetic and asked, "Baba! Why are you crying?"

.

The ascetic replied, "Son, I once possessed a box just like the one you hold in your hands. After toiling for many days, I had filled it to the brim with money."

.

"I harbored a great hope that, with the help of that money, I would be able to see Heaven. But today, while bathing in the holy Ganges, that box slipped from my grasp and fell into the water."

.

Lakshminarayan said, "Baba! Please do not weep. My box, too, is full. Please take this one instead."

.

The ascetic responded, "You have filled this box with such great effort; giving it away would surely cause you pain."

.

Lakshminarayan replied, "It will not cause me any pain, Baba! I am still a young man; I have many years of life ahead of me. I can easily fill many more boxes with money. You, however, have grown old. Please, take my box."

.

Accepting the box, the ascetic gently passed his hand over Lakshminarayan's eyes. Lakshminarayan's eyes closed, and he began to perceive the vision of Heaven.

.

It was a Heaven of such exquisite beauty that the descriptions his grandmother had once given—vivid as they seemed—did not accurately capture even a single corner of it.

.

When Lakshminarayan opened his eyes, the ascetic was gone; in his place stood the very deity he had once seen in a dream—now standing before him in physical form.

.

The deity spoke, "Son! For those who perform good deeds, their very homes become a paradise. If you continue to do good throughout your life in this manner, you will ultimately attain your place in Heaven." Having spoken these words, the deity vanished into thin air.
