महाभारत काल की बात है,एक बार कृष्ण और बलराम किसी जंगल से गुजर रहे थे चलते हुए काफी समय बीत गया और अब सूरज भी लगभग डूबने वाला था, अंधेरे में आगे बढ़ना संभव नही था,
इसलिए कृष्ण बोले, बलराम हम ऐसा करते है कि अब सुबह होने तक यहीं ठहर जाते है,भोर होते ही हम अपने गंतव्य की और बढ़ चलेंगेबलराम बोले, पर इस घने जंगल मे हमे खतरा हो सकता है,यहाँ सोना उचित नही होगा, हमे जाग कर ही रात बितानी होगी,
कृष्ण ने सुझाव दिया, अच्छा हम ऐसा करते है कि पहले मैं सोता हूँ और तब तक तुम पहरा देते रहो, और फ़िर जैसे ही तुम्हे नींद आए तुम मुझे जगा देना, तब मैं पहरा दूँगा और तुम सो जाना,
बलराम तैयार हो गए,
कुछ ही पलो मे कृष्ण गहरी नींद मे चले गए और तभी बलराम को एक भयानक आकृति उनकी ओर आती दिखी, वो कोई राक्षस था,
राक्षस बलराम को देखते ही जोर से चीखा और बलराम बुरी तरह डर गए, इस घटना का एक विचित्र असर हुआ, भय के कारण बलराम का आकार कुछ छोटा हो गया और राक्षस और विशाल हो गया,
उसके बाद राक्षस एक बार और चीखा और पुन: बलराम डर कर कांप उठे, अब बलराम और भी सिकुड़ गए, और राक्षस पहले से भी बड़ा हो गया
राक्षस धीरे-धीरे बलराम की और बढ़ने लगा, बलराम पहले से ही भयभीत थे और उस विशालकाय राक्षस को अपनी और आता देख जोर से चीख पड़े कृष्ण… और चीखते ही वहीं मूर्छित हो कर गिर पड़े,
बलराम की आवाज सुन कर कृष्ण उठे, बलराम को वहाँ देख उन्होने सोचा कि बलराम पहरा देते-दते थक गए और सोने से पहले उन्हे आवाज दे दी…
अब कृष्ण पहरा देने लगे,कुछ देर बाद वही राक्षस उनके सामने आया और जोर से चीखा
कृष्ण जरा भी घबराए नही और बोले, बताओ तुम इस तरह चीख क्यों रहे हो? क्या चाहिए तुम्हे?
इस बार भी कुछ विचित्र घटा, कृष्ण के साहस के कारण उनका आकार कुछ बढ़ गया और राक्षस का आकर कुछ घट गया, राक्षस को पहली बार कोई ऐसा मिला था जो उससे डर नही रहा था..
घबराहट मे वह पुन: कृष्ण पर जोर से चीखा…इस बार भी कृष्ण नही डरे और उनका आकर और भी बड़ा हो गया जबकि राक्षस पहले से भी छोटा हो गया..
एक आखिरी प्रयास मे राक्षस पूरी ताकत से चीखा पर कृष्ण मुस्कुरा उठे और फिर से बोले, बताओ तो क्या चाहिए तुम्हे?
फ़िर क्या था राक्षस सिकुड़ कर बिलकुल छोटा हो गया,और कृष्ण ने उसे हथेली मे लेकर अपनी धोती मे बाँध लिया और फिर कमर मे खोंस कर रख लिया…
कुछ ही देर मे सुबह हो गयी, कृष्ण ने बलराम को उठाया और आगे बढ़ने के लिए कहा, वे धीरे-धीरे आगे बढ़ने लगे
तभी बलराम उत्तेजित होते हुए बोले, पता है कल रात मे क्या हुआ था, एक भयानक राक्षस हमे मारने आया था…
रुको-रुको बलराम को बीच मे टोकते हुए कृष्ण ने अपनी धोती मे बँधा राक्षस निकाला और बलराम को दिखाते हुए बोले, कहीं तुम इसकी बात तो नही कर रहे हो?

This is a story from the time of the Mahabharata.Once, Krishna and Balarama were passing through a forest. After walking for a long time, the sun was almost about to set. It was no longer possible to move forward in the darkness.
So Krishna said, “Balarama, let us stay here until morning. At dawn, we will continue toward our destination.”Balarama replied, “But this is a dense forest, and there could be danger here. It would not be wise to sleep. We must stay awake through the night.”
Krishna suggested, “All right, let us do this: first I will sleep while you stand guard. When you begin to feel sleepy, wake me up. Then I will keep watch and you can rest.”
Balarama agreed.
Within moments, Krishna fell into a deep sleep. Just then, Balarama saw a terrifying figure approaching them—it was a demon.
As soon as the demon saw Balarama, it let out a loud, frightening scream. Balarama was terribly frightened. Something strange happened: due to fear, Balarama’s size began to shrink, and the demon grew larger.
The demon screamed once again, and Balarama trembled with fear. Now Balarama became even smaller, and the demon grew even bigger.
Slowly, the demon began moving toward Balarama. Already terrified, seeing the gigantic demon coming closer, Balarama cried out loudly, “Krishna!” and immediately fainted.
Hearing Balarama’s voice, Krishna woke up. Seeing Balarama lying there, Krishna thought that Balarama must have grown tired while standing guard and had called out to him before falling asleep.
Now Krishna began to keep watch.
After some time, the same demon appeared before him and screamed loudly.
Krishna did not panic at all and calmly said, “Tell me, why are you screaming like this? What do you want?”
Once again, something strange happened. Because of Krishna’s courage, his size increased slightly, while the demon’s size decreased. For the first time, the demon had encountered someone who was not afraid of him.
In nervousness, the demon screamed at Krishna again. This time too, Krishna did not feel afraid. His size increased further, while the demon became even smaller.
In a final attempt, the demon screamed with all his might. Krishna smiled and again said, “Tell me, what is it that you want?”
And then the demon shrank completely, becoming very small. Krishna picked him up in his palm, tied him in his dhoti, and tucked him at his waist.
Soon, morning arrived. Krishna woke Balarama and asked him to move forward. They began walking slowly.
Suddenly, Balarama said excitedly, “Do you know what happened last night? A terrifying demon came to kill us…”
“Wait, wait,” Krishna interrupted him, took out the demon tied in his dhoti, showed it to Balarama, and said, “Are you talking about this one?”

“Yes, this is the same one,” Balarama said in astonishment. “But when I saw him last night, he was enormous. How did he become so small?”
Krishna replied, “When we try to avoid something in life that we should face, it grows bigger than us and begins to control us. But when we face what we should face, we grow bigger than it—and we begin to control it.”
