14 वर्ष के वनवास के बाद जब भगवान राम वापस अयोध्या आये, तो अगस्त्य ऋषि उनसे मिलने आये और लंकायुद्ध की चर्चा छिड़ गयी।
भगवान राम ने उन्हें बताया कि कैसे उन्होंने रावण और कुंभकर्ण जैसे उग्र नायकों को मार डाला और लक्ष्मण ने इंद्रजीत और अतिकाय जैसे कई शक्तिशाली असुरों को भी मार डाला।
तब अगस्त्य ऋषि ने कहा, 'बेशक रावण और कुंभकर्ण बहुत वीर थे, लेकिन सबसे बड़ा असुर मेघनाद (इंद्रजीत) था। उसने स्वर्ग में देवराजइन्द्र से युद्ध किया और उन्हें बाँधकर लंका ले आया। जब ब्रह्मा ने मेघनाद से उसे छोड़ने के लिए कहा तो इंद्र को मुक्त कर दिया गया। लक्ष्मण ने सबसे शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति को मार डाला, इसलिए वह सबसे महान योद्धा बन गये।
अगस्त्य ऋषि से भाई की वीरता की प्रशंसा सुनकर भगवान राम बहुत प्रसन्न हुए, लेकिन उनके मन में यह जिज्ञासा उठ रही थी कि अगस्त्य ऋषि ऐसा क्यों कह रहे हैं कि इंद्रजीत का वध रावण से भी अधिक कठिन था।
भगवान राम की जिज्ञासा को शांत करने के लिए, अगस्त्य ऋषि ने कहा, "इंद्रजीत को वरदान था कि उसे कोई ऐसा व्यक्ति मार सकता है जो 12 वर्षों तक सोया नहीं था और 12 वर्षों तक कुछ भी नहीं खाया था।"
अगस्त्य ऋषि की बातें सुनकर भगवान राम ने कहा, 'मैं वनवास काल के दौरान 14 वर्षों तक नियमित रूप से लक्ष्मण के हिस्से के फल और फूल उन्हें दिया करता था।' "मैं सीता के साथ एक कुटिया में रहता था, बगल की कुटिया में लक्ष्मण थे, फिर उन्होंने सीता का चेहरा भी नहीं देखा और 12 साल तक सोए नहीं, यह कैसे संभव है"!!

लक्ष्मण को बुलाकर इस बारे में पूछा गया। फिर, उन्होंने उत्तर दिया, “जब हम पहाड़ पर गए, तो सुग्रीव ने हमसे उसके गहने दिखाकर उसे पहचानने के लिए कहा। मुझे उसके पैरों में नूपुर के अलावा कोई भी आभूषण नहीं पहचाना, क्योंकि मैंने कभी उसकी ओर देखा ही नहीं। जब आप और देवी सीता कुटिया में शयन करते थे तो मैं सारी रात बाहर पहरा देता था। जब नींद ने मेरी आँखों पर कब्ज़ा करने की कोशिश की तो मैंने अपने बाणों से मेरी आँखों को अवरुद्ध कर दिया था।” तब लक्ष्मण ने 12 वर्ष तक भूखे रहने के बारे में बताया, "मैं जो फल-फूल लाता था उसका 3 भाग आप करते थे। आप मुझे एक भाग देकर कहते थे- यह फल रख लो लक्ष्मण। आपने मुझसे कभी फल खाने को नहीं कहा।" - तो फिर आपकी इजाजत के बिना मैं इसे कैसे खा सकता हूं?
लक्ष्मण की ये बातें सुनकर भगवान श्री राम ने उन्हें गले लगा लिया।'' यही कारण था कि इन कठोर प्रतिज्ञाओं के कारण ही वे मेघनाथ को मारने का साहसी कार्य कर सके और वीर योद्धा कहलाये।

After 14 years of exile, when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya, Sage Agastya came to meet him, and the discussion about the Lanka war began.
Lord Rama told him how he had killed mighty warriors like Ravana and Kumbhakarna, and how Lakshmana had slain powerful demons like Indrajit (Meghanad) and others.
Then Sage Agastya said, “Indeed, Ravana and Kumbhakarna were very brave, but the greatest demon was Meghanad (Indrajit). He even fought with Indra, the king of gods, and captured him, bringing him to Lanka. When Brahma instructed Meghanad to release Indra, he did so. Lakshmana killed the most powerful being, which is why he became the greatest warrior.”
Hearing Sage Agastya praise his brother’s bravery, Lord Rama was very pleased, but a question arose in his mind—why was Sage Agastya saying that killing Indrajit was even more difficult than killing Ravana?
To satisfy Lord Rama’s curiosity, Sage Agastya explained, “Indrajit had a boon that he could only be killed by someone who had neither slept nor eaten anything for 12 years.”
Hearing this, Lord Rama said, “During our exile of 14 years, I used to regularly give Lakshmana his share of fruits and flowers. I stayed in a cottage with Sita, and next to it, Lakshmana stayed in another cottage. He never even looked at Sita, and yet he went without sleep for 12 years. How was that possible?”
Lord Rama called Lakshmana and asked him about it. Lakshmana replied, “When we went to the mountains, Sugriva asked us to identify her jewelry to recognize her. I only recognized the anklets on her feet, because I never even looked at her. When you and Devi Sita slept in the cottage, I kept vigil outside all night. Whenever sleep tried to overpower my eyes, I blocked them with my arrows.”

Regarding the 12 years of fasting, Lakshmana added, “The fruits and flowers I brought, I would give three parts—two you would take, and one you would give back to me, saying, ‘Keep this fruit, Lakshmana.’ You never asked me to eat anything. How could I eat without your permission?”
Hearing this, Lord Rama embraced Lakshmana.
“This is why, because of such strict vows and discipline, he was able to perform the courageous feat of killing Meghanad and became a heroic warrior.”
