बहुत समय पहले की बात है। एक छोटे से गाँव में एक बुजुर्ग महिला रहती थीं, जिनका जीवन प्रभु भक्ति में बीता था। रोज़ सुबह-शाम वे मंदिर जातीं, भजन गातीं और सभी से प्रेमपूर्वक व्यवहार करतीं। जब मृत्यु का समय आया, तो स्वयं यमराज उनके सामने प्रकट हुए।
महिला ने पूछा — “हे यमराज! बताइए, मैं कहाँ जाऊँगी — स्वर्ग या नरक?”
यमराज मुस्कुराए, “माता, आपने जीवनभर सच्चे मन से भक्ति की है। प्रभु आपसे प्रसन्न हैं, इसलिए आपको उनके धाम ले जाया जाएगा।”
महिला प्रसन्न हुईं, पर मन में एक जिज्ञासा जागी। उन्होंने विनम्रता से कहा — “यदि अनुमति हो तो मैं स्वर्ग और नरक दोनों देखना चाहूँगी। मैंने इनके बारे में बहुत सुना है, पर देखा नहीं।”
यमराज बोले, “आपकी भक्ति के कारण यह इच्छा भी पूरी होगी।”
सबसे पहले वे उन्हें नरक ले गए। वहाँ का दृश्य भयावह था — लोग चीख रहे थे, तड़प रहे थे, पर मर नहीं पा रहे थे। बीच में एक बड़ा पात्र लटका था, जिसमें स्वादिष्ट खीर थी, पर कोई खा नहीं पा रहा था। महिला ने पूछा, “इतनी स्वादिष्ट खीर सामने है, फिर भी भूखे क्यों हो?”
एक व्यक्ति बोला, “माँ, हमारे पास लंबी चम्मचें हैं, पर बर्तन इतना ऊँचा है कि कोई स्वयं नहीं खा सकता।”
महिला के हृदय में करुणा उमड़ आई।
फिर यमराज उन्हें स्वर्ग ले गए। वहाँ सब ओर हँसी, संगीत और शांति थी। पर हैरानी की बात — वहाँ भी वही ऊँचा बर्तन था, वही खीर, वही चम्मचें। लेकिन लोग भूखे नहीं थे, सब प्रसन्न थे।
महिला ने आश्चर्य से पूछा, “यह कैसे संभव है?”
एक वृद्ध व्यक्ति मुस्कुराया, “माता, फर्क केवल सोच का है। नरक में लोग केवल अपने लिए खाना चाहते थे, पर यहाँ हम एक-दूसरे को खिलाते हैं। जो दूसरों को तृप्त करता है, वही स्वयं तृप्त होता है। यही स्वर्ग का रहस्य है।”
महिला की आँखें नम हो गईं। उन्हें समझ आ गया — प्रभु ने सबको समान परिस्थिति दी है, फर्क केवल दृष्टिकोण और सहयोग का होता है।
यमराज बोले, “माता, अब चलिए, प्रभु के धाम चलें।”
महिला शांत मुस्कान के साथ बोलीं, “अब मैं समझ गई हूँ — स्वर्ग और नरक कोई जगह नहीं, वे हमारे विचारों और कर्मों में बसते हैं।”
उन्होंने आँखें मूँदीं और प्रभु के धाम चली गईं।
सीख:
जीवन की परिस्थितियाँ सभी के लिए लगभग समान होती हैं। जो प्रेम और सहयोग से जीता है, वही स्वर्ग में है। जो स्वार्थ में उलझा रहता है, वह नरक में।

A long time ago, in a small village, there lived an elderly woman whose entire life was devoted to devotion to God. Every morning and evening, she would go to the temple, sing devotional songs, and treat everyone with love and kindness. When the time of her death arrived, Lord Yama himself appeared before her.
The woman asked,
“O Lord Yama, please tell me—where will I go: heaven or hell?”
Yamraj smiled and said,
“Mother, you have worshipped with a true heart throughout your life. God is pleased with you, so you will be taken to His divine abode.”
The woman felt happy, but a curiosity arose in her mind. Humbly, she said,
“If permitted, I would like to see both heaven and hell. I have heard a lot about them, but never seen them.”
Yamraj replied,
“Because of your devotion, this wish will also be fulfilled.”
First, he took her to hell. The scene there was terrifying—people were screaming and suffering, yet unable to die. In the center, there hung a large vessel filled with delicious rice pudding (kheer), but no one was able to eat it. The woman asked,
“Such delicious food is right here, yet why are they starving?”
A man replied,
“Mother, we have long spoons, but the vessel is placed so high that no one can feed themselves.”
The woman’s heart filled with compassion.
Then Yamraj took her to heaven. There was laughter, music, and peace everywhere. But surprisingly—the same tall vessel was there, the same kheer, and the same long spoons. Yet no one was hungry; everyone was joyful.
The woman asked in astonishment,
“How is this possible?”
An elderly man smiled and said,
“Mother, the difference lies only in thinking. In hell, people wanted to eat only for themselves, but here we feed one another. One who satisfies others is satisfied themselves. This is the secret of heaven.”
The woman’s eyes filled with tears. She understood—God has given everyone similar circumstances; the difference lies only in perspective and cooperation.
Yamraj said,
“Mother, now let us go to God’s abode.”
With a calm smile, the woman replied,
“Now I understand—heaven and hell are not places; they exist within our thoughts and actions.”
She closed her eyes and departed to the divine abode.
Lesson:
Life’s circumstances are almost the same for everyone. One who lives with love and cooperation lives in heaven. One who remains trapped in selfishness lives in hell.
Helping others is true devotion—this is the heaven of mindset.
