महाभारत युद्ध के ३६ वर्ष पश्चात, गांधारी के श्राप और ऋषियों के श्राप के कारण यदुवंशियों की बुद्धि भ्रष्ट हो गई थी। वे सभी प्रभास क्षेत्र (वर्तमान सोमनाथ के पास) में एकत्रित हुए। वहाँ मदिरा के नशे में चूर होकर वे आपस में ही लड़ने लगे। 'एरका' (एक प्रकार की घास) लोहे के मूसल में बदल गई और उसी से प्रहार कर उन्होंने एक-दूसरे का संहार कर लिया।
जब भगवान श्री कृष्ण और बलराम जी ने अपनी आँखों के सामने अपने ही कुल का विनाश देखा, तो बलराम जी अत्यंत व्यथित हो गए। वे समझ गए कि पृथ्वी का भार उतारने का उनका अवतार कार्य अब पूर्ण हो चुका है।
श्रीमद्भागवत के अनुसार, उस विभीषिका से दूर हटकर बलराम जी समुद्र तट पर एक शांत स्थान पर गए। वहाँ एक विशाल वृक्ष के नीचे बैठकर उन्होंने अपनी चित्तवृत्तियों को एकाग्र किया और समाधिस्थ हो गए। उन्होंने 'आत्मानं आत्मनि' (स्वयं को परमात्मा में) लीन करने की योग प्रक्रिया आरंभ की।
महाभारत के मौसल पर्व में इस दृश्य का बहुत ही अद्भुत वर्णन मिलता है:
जब बलराम जी योग समाधि में स्थित थे, तब उनके मुख से एक अत्यंत विशाल और श्वेत रंग का सर्प निकला। यह कोई साधारण सर्प नहीं था, बल्कि स्वयं सहस्त्र फनों वाले भगवान शेषनाग थे।
जैसे ही वह दिव्य सर्प उनके शरीर से बाहर निकला, बलराम जी का मानवी शरीर वहीं निर्जीव हो गया।
उस श्वेत सर्प के निकलते ही दिशाएं प्रकाशमान हो उठीं।
वह दिव्य सर्प समुद्र की ओर बढ़ा।
जैसे ही शेषनाग (बलराम जी का मूल स्वरूप) समुद्र के पास पहुँचे, स्वयं समुद्र देवता हाथ जोड़कर उनकी अगवानी के लिए प्रकट हुए। उनके साथ पाताल लोक के अन्य दिव्य नाग—जैसे वासुकी, तक्षक और कर्कोटक—ने भी उनका स्वागत किया और उनकी स्तुति की।
समुद्र ने उन्हें मार्ग दिया और वह दिव्य ज्योति पुंज (शेषनाग) क्षीरसागर में प्रवेश कर गया, जहाँ वे पुनः भगवान विष्णु की शय्या के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित हो गए।
भगवान श्री कृष्ण कुछ दूरी पर खड़े होकर अपने बड़े भाई की इस अंतिम लीला को देख रहे थे। बलराम जी के जाने के बाद, श्री कृष्ण भी एक पीपल के वृक्ष के नीचे गए और वहीं विश्राम करते हुए उन्होंने भी जरा नामक व्याध के बाण को निमित्त बनाकर अपना देहत्याग किया।

वे समुद्र तट पर समाधि में बैठे, उनके मुख से सहस्रफनी शेषनाग निकले और सागर में समा गए। यह मृत्यु नहीं, बल्कि उनके 'अवतार कार्य की समाप्ति' और 'मूल स्वरूप में वापसी' थी।

How Balarama Ji Left His Mortal Body: Return to the Form of Sheshnag
Thirty-six years after the Mahabharata war, due to the curse of Gandhari and the curse of the sages, the intellect of the Yadava clan became corrupted. All the Yadavas gathered at the Prabhasa region (near present-day Somnath). Intoxicated by liquor, they began fighting among themselves. The Eraka grass miraculously turned into iron clubs, and using those very clubs, they destroyed one another.
When Lord Shri Krishna and Balarama Ji witnessed the destruction of their own clan with their own eyes, Balarama Ji was deeply distressed. He realized that his divine mission—incarnating on Earth to relieve it of its burden—had now been completed.
According to the Shrimad Bhagavatam, distancing himself from that catastrophe, Balarama Ji went to a calm place on the seashore. Sitting beneath a great tree, he focused his mind and entered deep yogic meditation (samadhi). He began the yogic process of merging the self into the Supreme—“Atmanam Atmani” (absorbing the self into the Supreme Self).
The Mausala Parva of the Mahabharata gives a wondrous description of this event. While Balarama Ji was absorbed in yogic samadhi, an enormous white serpent emerged from his mouth. This was no ordinary serpent—it was Lord Sheshnag himself, the thousand-hooded divine serpent.
As soon as that divine serpent emerged, Balarama Ji’s human body became lifeless at that very spot. With the appearance of the radiant white serpent, all directions became illuminated. The divine serpent then moved toward the ocean.
When Sheshnag (the original form of Balarama Ji) reached the seashore, the Ocean God himself appeared with folded hands to welcome him. Along with him, the divine Nagas of the netherworld—such as Vasuki, Takshaka, and Karkotaka—also welcomed and praised him. The ocean made way, and that divine mass of light (Sheshnag) entered the Kshira Sagara (the Ocean of Milk), where he was once again established as the divine couch of Lord Vishnu.
Lord Shri Krishna stood at a distance, witnessing this final divine act of his elder brother. After Balarama Ji’s departure, Shri Krishna too went and rested beneath a peepal tree, and there—using the arrow of the hunter Jara as the divine instrument—he also relinquished his mortal body.

According to authoritative scriptures such as the Shrimad Bhagavatam and the Mahabharata, Balarama Ji sat in samadhi on the seashore, Sheshnag emerged from his mouth, and he merged into the ocean. This was not death, but the completion of his divine incarnation and a return to his original cosmic form.
