एकादशी की भक्ति और श्री नामदेव जी की अनुपम परीक्षा | Shri Namdev Ji and the Ultimate Test of Ekadashi Devotion

श्री नामदेव जी महाराष्ट्र के एक सुप्रसिद्ध संत थे। वे विट्ठल भगवान के बहुत बड़े भगत हुए हैं।
उनका ध्यान सदा विट्ठल भगवान के दर्शन, भजन और कीर्तन में ही लगा रहता था। सांसारिक कार्यों में उनका जरा भी मन नहीं लगता था।
वे एकादशी व्रत के प्रति पूर्ण निष्ठावान थे। वे उस दिन जल भी नहीं पीते थे। एकादशी की सम्पूर्ण रात्रि को हरिनाम संकीर्तन करते थे।
एकादशी को वे न अन्न खाते और न किसी को खिलाते।
एक दिन एकादशी की रात्रि को वे हरिनाम संकीर्तन कर रहे थे। उनके साथ अनेकानेक भक्त भी संकीर्तन कर रहे थे।
अचानक एक क्षीणकाय, हड्डियों का ढाचा मात्र एक वृद्ध ब्राह्मण उनके द्वार पर आया और बोला,‘मैं अत्यन्त भूखा हूं। मुझे भोजन कराओ अन्यथा मैं भूख के मारे मर जाऊंगा।’
श्री नामदेव जी बोले,‘मैं एकादशी को न अन्न खाता हूं और न अन्न किसी और को खिलाता हूँ।
अतः ब्राह्मण देवता प्रातः काल सूर्योदय का इंतजार करो। व्रत का पारण कर आपको भर पेट भोजन कराऊंगा।’
ब्राह्मण बोला,‘मुझे तो अभी ही भोजन चाहिए। मैं एक सौ बीस वर्ष का बूढ़ा हूं। एकादशी व्रत आठ वर्ष से लेकर अस्सी वर्ष तक के लोगों के लिए है।
मैं भूख से मर जाऊंगा और तुमको ब्रह्म हत्या का पाप लगेगा।’
श्री नाम देव जी ने कहा,‘ब्राह्मण देवता चाहे कुछ भी हो जाए मैं आपको भोजन नहीं करा सकता। कृपया आप सुबह तक प्रतिक्षा करें।’
श्री नाम देव जी के ऐसे व्यवहार के प्रति अन्य ग्राम-वासियों ने नाम देव जी को निष्ठुर कहा और ब्राह्मण को भोजन देना चाहा परन्तु ब्राह्मण ने भोजन लेने से इंकार कर दिया और कहा,
‘यदि मैं भोजन ग्रहण करूंगा तो सिर्फ और सिर्फ नामदेव से ही करूंगा।’
श्री नाम देव जी ने जब ब्राह्मण को भोजन न दिया तो कुछ ही समय में उसके प्राण पखेरू उड़ गए।
वहां उपस्थित सभी लोग श्री नामदेव जी के प्रति अपशब्द कहने लगे और उन्हें हत्यारा कह कर संबोधित करने लगे।
श्री नाम देव जी कुछ न बोले पूर्ववत विट्ठल भगवान के भजन और कीर्तन में ही लगे रहे... तथा एक पल के लिए उठे और मृतक शरीर को ढक कर रख दिया व मृत देह के समक्ष नाम संकीर्तन करते रहे।
प्रातःकाल श्री नाम देव जी ने व्रत पारण किया और एक चिता बनवाई। स्वयं उस ब्राह्मण के पार्थिव शरीर को अपनी गोद में लेकर चिता पर बैठ गए।
चिता को प्रज्वलित किया गया। जब आग की लपटें श्री नामदेव जी तक पहुंचने ही वाली थी तो अचानक वह ब्राह्मण उठा और श्री नाम देवजी को उठाकर चिता से बाहर कूद पड़ा...
जब तक नामदेव जी कुछ समझ पाते वह बूढ़ा अंतर्धान हो गया।
स्वयं विट्ठल भगवान ही उनकी परीक्षा लेने आए थे।
इस घटना को देख कर सब आश्चर्यचकित हो गए और श्री नाम देव जी की जय-जयकार करने लगे। धन्य हैं श्री नामदेव जी।
चित में प्रज्ञा का प्रकाश, ज्ञान का दीपक जले तभी ठाकुर जी का निराकार स्वरूप दिखाई देता है।
भागवत श्रवण से चित रूपी दीपक जलाने का प्रयास मानव को करना चाहिए। मानव को अज्ञानता से लडऩा चाहिए मगर आलोचना और अज्ञानता पर चर्चा करके अपना समय बर्बाद नहीं करना चाहिए।

Shri Namdev Ji was a renowned saint of Maharashtra. He was a great devotee of Lord Vitthal.
His mind was always absorbed in the vision, devotion, bhajans, and kirtans of Lord Vitthal. He had no interest at all in worldly affairs.
He was completely devoted to the observance of the Ekadashi fast. On that day, he did not even drink water. He spent the entire night of Ekadashi in chanting the holy name of the Lord (Hari Naam Sankirtan).
On Ekadashi, he neither ate food himself nor offered food to anyone else.
One night, during Ekadashi, Shri Namdev Ji was engaged in Hari Naam Sankirtan along with many devotees.
Suddenly, a frail old Brahmin, nothing but skin and bones, arrived at his doorstep and said,
“I am extremely hungry. Feed me, or I will die of hunger.”
Shri Namdev Ji replied,
“On Ekadashi, I neither eat food nor feed anyone else. Therefore, revered Brahmin, please wait until sunrise. After breaking my fast in the morning, I will feed you to your heart’s content.”
The Brahmin said,
“I need food right now. I am one hundred and twenty years old. The Ekadashi fast is meant for people between the ages of eight and eighty. I will die of hunger, and you will incur the sin of killing a Brahmin.”
Shri Namdev Ji said firmly,
“Brahmin Devta, no matter what happens, I cannot feed you today. Please wait until morning.”
Seeing this behavior, the villagers called Shri Namdev Ji heartless and wanted to feed the Brahmin themselves. But the Brahmin refused and said,
“If I eat, I will eat only from Namdev’s hands.”
When Shri Namdev Ji did not give him food, the Brahmin soon breathed his last.
All those present began to abuse Shri Namdev Ji, calling him a murderer.
Shri Namdev Ji remained silent and continued singing bhajans and kirtans of Lord Vitthal. He briefly rose, covered the dead body, and continued chanting the Lord’s name in front of it.
In the morning, Shri Namdev Ji broke his fast and arranged for a funeral pyre. He himself lifted the Brahmin’s body onto his lap and sat on the pyre.
When the pyre was lit and the flames were about to reach Shri Namdev Ji, suddenly the Brahmin rose, lifted Namdev Ji, and leapt off the pyre.
Before Namdev Ji could understand what had happened, the old Brahmin disappeared.
It was Lord Vitthal Himself who had come to test him.
Witnessing this divine event, everyone was astonished and began praising Shri Namdev Ji. Blessed indeed is Shri Namdev Ji.
Only when the light of wisdom shines in the heart and the lamp of knowledge is lit does one behold the formless divine form of the Lord.
Through listening to the Bhagavat, a person should strive to light the lamp of consciousness within the heart. One should fight ignorance, but should not waste time in criticism or in merely discussing ignorance.
