चौधरी पहलवान का पूरा जीवन जरूरतमंदों की सहायता के लिए समर्पित हुआ था। जब उनका अंतिम समय नजदीक आया तो उन्होंने अपने बेटे को पास बुलाया।
बेटा पास आ गया तो उन्होंने उससे कहा, 'देखो बेटा, मैंने अपना सारा जीवन दुनिया को शिक्षा देने में गुजार दिया।
अब अपने अंतिम समय में मैं तुम्हें कुछ जरूरी बातें बताना चाहता हूं। लेकिन इससे पहले जरा तुम एक कोयला और चंदन का एक टुकड़ा उठा कर ले लाओ।
बेटे को पहले तो यह बड़ा अटपटा लगा, लेकिन उसने सोचा कि अब पिता का हुक्म है तो यह सब लाना ही होगा। उसने रसोई घर से कोयले का एक टुकड़ा उठाया।
संयोग से घर में चंदन की एक छोटी लकड़ी भी मिल गई। वह दोनों को लेकर अपने पिता के पास पहुंच गया।
उसे आया देख पहलवान बोले, 'बेटा, अब इन दोनों चीजों को नीचे फेंक दो।' बेटे ने दोनों चीजें नीचे फेंक दीं और हाथ धोने जाने लगा तो पहलवान बोले, 'जरा ठहरो बेटा।
मुझे अपने हाथ तो दिखाओ।' बेटे ने हाथ दिखाए तो वह उसका कोयले वाला हाथ पकड़ कर बोले, 'देखा तुमने।
कोयला पकड़ते ही हाथ काला हो गया। लेकिन उसे फेंक देने के बाद भी तुम्हारे हाथ में कालिख लगी रह गई।
गलत लोगों की संगति ऐसी ही होती है। उनके साथ रहने पर भी दुख होता है और उनके न रहने पर भी जीवन भर के लिए बदनामी साथ लग जाती है।
दूसरी ओर सज्जनों का संग इस चंदन की लकडी की तरह है जो साथ रहते हैं तो दुनिया भर का ज्ञान मिलता है और उनका साथ छूटने पर भी उनके विचारों की महक जीवन भर बनी रहती है।
इसलिए हमेशा अच्छे लोगों की संगति में ही रहना।
आप स्वयं विचार करे - जीवन हमारा तो सज्जन /दुर्जन संग का निर्णय भी हमारा ही हो!

Chaudhary Pehlwan dedicated his entire life to helping those in need. When his final moments drew near, he called his son to his side.
When the son came closer, he said,
“Look, my son, I have spent my entire life educating the world.
Now, in my final moments, I want to share some important lessons with you.
But before that, go and bring me a piece of coal and a piece of sandalwood.”
At first, the son found this request quite strange, but thinking it was his father’s command, he went ahead. He picked up a piece of coal from the kitchen.
By chance, there was also a small piece of sandalwood in the house. He brought both items to his father.
Seeing him return, Pehlwan said,
“Son, now throw both of these on the ground.”
The son threw them down and started to go wash his hands, when Pehlwan stopped him and said,
“Wait a moment, son. Show me your hands.”
When the son showed his hands, Pehlwan held the hand that had held the coal and said,
“Did you notice? As soon as you touched the coal, your hand turned black.
And even after throwing it away, the black soot still remained on your hand.
This is what happens when we associate with wrong people.
Being with them causes suffering, and even after leaving them, the stain of disgrace can remain for a lifetime.
On the other hand, the company of noble people is like this piece of sandalwood.
When they are with us, we gain knowledge and virtue, and even after they are gone, the fragrance of their thoughts remains with us throughout life.
Therefore, always keep the company of good people.”
Now reflect for yourself — life is ours, and the decision of choosing good or bad company is also ours.
