अंधविश्वास की कहानी अविद्या क्या है?
एक दिन अकबर ने बीरबल से पूछा “बीरबल, यह अविद्या (अज्ञान) क्या होती है?”
बीरबल मुस्कराया और बोला “जहाँपनाह, मुझे चार दिन की छुट्टी दें। मैं आपको प्रत्यक्ष उदाहरण दिखाकर बताऊँगा।”
अकबर ने सहमति दे दी।

चार दिन की छुट्टी मिलते ही बीरबल एक मोची के पास गया और बोला “भाई, एक जूती बनाओ। लेकिन नाप-तोल मत करना। बस डेढ़ फुट लंबी और एक बित्ता चौड़ी हो। उस पर सोने-चाँदी के धागे, हीरे-जवाहरात जड़ देना। पैसे की चिंता मत करना।”
मोची हैरान तो हुआ, पर वचन अनुसार तीसरे दिन वैसी ही विचित्र जूती बनाकर दे दी। बीरबल ने पैसे दिए और मोची से शपथ ले ली कि वह इस जूती की बात कभी किसी से नहीं करेगा।
फिर बीरबल ने एक जूती अपने पास रखी और दूसरी मस्जिद में रख दी।
अगली सुबह मौलवी जब नमाज़ पढ़ाने पहुँचे तो उन्होंने वह अजीब सी जूती देखी। चकित होकर बोले “यह इंसान की जूती तो हो ही नहीं सकती, अवश्य अल्लाह की होगी!”
मौलवी ने उसे श्रद्धा से माथे से लगाया, सिर पर रखा और चूमने लगे।
यह दृश्य देखकर लोग भी वही करने लगे। धीरे-धीरे यह खबर अकबर तक पहुँची।
अकबर स्वयं मस्जिद में गया, जूती देखी और बोला “हाँ, यह तो अल्लाह की ही होगी!”
उसने भी उसे माथे से लगाया, चूमा और आदेश दिया कि इसे मस्जिद में सम्मानपूर्वक रखा जाए।
कुछ दिनों बाद बीरबल दरबार में लौटा। अकबर ने पूछा “कैसा रहा अवकाश?”
बीरबल ने दुखी स्वर में कहा “जहाँपनाह, हमारे घर में चोरी हो गई। हमारे परदादा की पुरानी जूती चोर उठा ले गया। बस एक ही बची है।”
उसने अकबर को वही दूसरी जूती दिखाई। अकबर ने उसे देखकर माथा पीट लिया और मस्जिद से दूसरी जूती मँगवाई। दोनों बिल्कुल एक जैसी थीं।
अकबर शर्म से बोला “हे अल्लाह! मैंने तो अज्ञानवश उसे आपकी जूती मानकर सर झुकाया और चाटा भी!
तब बीरबल ने कहा “जहाँपनाह, यही है अविद्या। यही है अंधविश्वास। जब सच्चाई का ज्ञान न हो और लोग बिना सोचे-समझे भेड़चाल में चलें, वही अज्ञान का सबसे बड़ा रूप है।”

The Story of Superstition: What is Ignorance?
One day, Akbar asked Birbal, “Birbal, what is ignorance?”
Birbal smiled and said, “Your Majesty, grant me four days' leave. I will show you with a practical example.”
Akbar agreed.

As soon as he got his four days' leave, Birbal went to a shoemaker and said, “Brother, make a pair of shoes. But don't take any measurements. Just make them one and a half feet long and one handspan wide. Embellish them with gold and silver threads, diamonds and jewels. Don't worry about the money.”
The shoemaker was surprised, but as promised, he made the strange pair of shoes and delivered them on the third day. Birbal paid him and made the shoemaker swear that he would never tell anyone about these shoes.
Then Birbal kept one shoe with himself and placed the other in the mosque.
The next morning, when the Mullah arrived to lead the prayers, he saw the strange shoe. Astonished, he exclaimed, “This cannot be a human's shoe, it must be Allah's!”
The Mullah reverently touched it to his forehead, placed it on his head, and began to kiss it.
Seeing this, the people also started doing the same. Gradually, this news reached Akbar.
Akbar himself went to the mosque, saw the shoe, and said, “Yes, this must be Allah's!”
He too touched it to his forehead, kissed it, and ordered that it be kept respectfully in the mosque.
A few days later, Birbal returned to the court. Akbar asked, “How was your leave?”
Birbal said in a sad voice, “Your Majesty, there was a robbery at our house. The thieves stole our great-grandfather's old shoe. Only one is left.”
He showed Akbar the other shoe. Akbar looked at it, slapped his forehead in disbelief, and ordered the other shoe to be brought from the mosque. Both were exactly alike. Akbar said in shame, "O Allah! In my ignorance, I bowed down to it, mistaking it for your slipper, and even licked it!"
Then Birbal said, "Your Majesty, this is ignorance. This is superstition. When there is no knowledge of the truth, and people blindly follow the crowd without thinking, that is the greatest form of ignorance."
