मैंने सुना है, तिब्बत में एक बड़ी प्राचीन, कहानी है। एक आदमी लंबी यात्रा से लौटा अपने मित्र के घर रात में ठहरा और , यात्रा की चर्चा करते हुए, उसने मित्र से कहा कि एक बहुत अनूठी चीज मेरे हाथ लग गई है।
और मैंने सोचा था कि जब मैं लौटूंगा तो अपने मित्र को दे दूंगा, लेकिन अब मैं डरता हूं, तुम्हें दूं या न दूं। डरता हूं इसलिए कि जो भी मैंने उसके परिणाम देखे वे बड़े खतरनाक हैं।
मुझे एक ऐसा ताबीज मिल गया है कि तुम उससे तीन आकांक्षायें मांग लो, वे पूरी हो जाती हैं। और मैंने तीन खुद भी मांग कर देख लीं। वे पूरी हो गई हैं और अब मैं पछताता हूं कि मैंने क्यों मांगीं?
मुझसे पहले मेरे और मित्रों ने भी तीन आकांक्षायें मांग कर देख ली हैं, सब छाती पीट रहे हैं, सिर ठोक रहे हैं। सोचा था तुम्हें दूंगा, लेकिन अब मैं डरता हूं, दूं या न दूं।
मित्र तो दीवाना हो गया। उसने कहा, 'तुम यह क्या कहते हो; न दूं? कहां है ताबीज? अब हम ज्यादा देर रुक नहीं सकते। क्योंकि कल का क्या भरोसा?' पत्नी तो बिलकुल पीछे पड़ गई उसके कि निकालो ताबीज। उसने कहा कि 'भई, मुझे सोच लेने दो। क्योंकि जो परिणाम, सब बुरे हुए।' उसके मित्र ने कहा, 'तुमने मांगा ढंग से नहीं होगा। गलत मांग लिया होगा।'
हर आदमी यही सोचता है कि दूसरा गलत मांग रहा है, इसलिए मुश्किल में पड़ा। मैं बिलकुल ठीक मांग लूंगा।
लेकिन कोई भी नहीं जानता कि जब तक तुम ठीक नहीं हो, तुम ठीक मांगोगे कैसे? मांग तो तुमसे पैदा होगी। नहीं माना मित्र, नहीं मानी पत्नी। उन्होंने बहुत आग्रह किया तो ताबीज देकर मित्र उदास चला गया। सुबह तक ठहरना मुश्किल था।
दोनों ने सोचा, क्या मांगें? बहुत दिन से एक आकांक्षा थी कि घर में कम से कम एक लाख रुपया हो। तो पहला लखपति हो जाने की आकांक्षा थी। और लखपति तिब्बत में बहुत बड़ी बात है। तो उन्होंने कहा, वह पहली आकांक्षा तो पूरी कर ही लें, फिर सोचेंगे। तो पहली आकांक्षा मांगी कि लाख रुपया।
जैसे ही कोई आकांक्षा मांगोगे, ताबीज हाथ से गिरता था झटक कर। उसका मतलब था कि मांग स्वीकार हो गई। बस, पंद्रह मिनट बाद दरवाजे पर दस्तक पड़ी।
खबर आई कि लड़का जो राजा की सेना में था, वह मारा गया और राजा ने लाख रुपये का पुरस्कार दिया। पत्नी तो छाती पीट कर रोने लगी कि यह क्या हुआ?
उसने कहा कि दूसरी आकांक्षा इसी वक्त मांगो कि मेरा लड़का जिंदा किया जाए। बाप थोड़ा डरा। उसने कहा कि यह अभी जो पहली का फल हुआ...पर पत्नी एकदम पीछे पड़ी थी कि देर मत करो कहीं वे दफना न दें, कहीं लाश सड़-गल न जाए, जल्दी मांगो।
तो दूसरी आकांक्षा मांगी कि लड़का हमारा वापिस लौटा दिया जाए। ताबीज गिरा। पंद्रह मिनट बाद दरवाजे पर किसी ने दस्तक दी। लड़के के पैर की आहट थी। उसने जोर से कहा, 'पिताजी।' आवाज भी सुनाई पड़ी, पर दोनों बहुत डर गये। इतने जल्दी लड़का आ गया? बाप ने बाहर झांक कर देखा, वहां कोई दिखाई नहीं पड़ता। खिड़की में से देखा, वहां कोई दिखाई नहीं पड़ता, कोई चलता-फिरता मालूम होता है।
वह लड़का प्रेत होकर वापिस आ गया, क्योंकि शरीर तो दफना दिया जा चुका था। पत्नी और पति दोनों घबड़ा रहे हैं, कि अब क्या करें? दरवाजा खोलें कि नहीं? क्योंकि तुमने भला कितना ही लड़के को प्रेम किया हो, अगर वह प्रेत होकर आ जाए तो हिम्मत पस्त हो जायेगी।
बाप ने कहा, 'रुक अभी एक आकांक्षा और मांगने को बाकी है।' और उसने ताबीज से कहा, 'कृपा कर और इस लड़के से छुटकारा। नहीं तो अब यह सतायेगा जिंदगी भर।
यह प्रेत अगर यहां रह गया घर में...इससे छुटकारा करवा दे।' और पति आधी रात गया ताबीज देने अपने मित्र को वापिस। और कहा कि, 'इसे तुम कहीं फेंक ही दो। अब किसी को भूल कर मत देना।'
तुम्हारी पूरी जिंदगी की कथा इस ताबीज की कथा में छिपी है। जो तुम मांगते हो वह मिल जाता है। नहीं मिलता है तो तुम परेशान होते हो। मिल जाता है, फिर तुम परेशान होते हो। गरीब दुखी दिखता है, अमीर और भी दुखी दिखता है।
जिसकी शादी नहीं हुई वह परेशान है, जिसकी शादी हो गई है वह छाती पीट रहा है, सिर ठोंक रहा है। जिसको बच्चे नहीं हैं वह घूम रहा है साधु-संतों के सत्संग में कि कहीं बच्चा मिल जाए और जिनको बच्चे हैं, वे कहते हैं, कैसे इनसे छुटकारा होगा। यह क्या उपद्रव हो गया।
तुम्हारे पास कुछ है तो तुम रो रहे हो; तुम्हारे पास कुछ नहीं है तो तुम रो रहे हो। और मौलिक कारण यह है कि तुम गलत हो। इसलिए तुम जो भी चाहते हो, वह गलत ही चाहते हो।
इसलिए समझदार व्यक्ति परमात्मा से यह नहीं कहता कि मेरी प्रार्थना पूरी करना, वह उससे कहता है, 'जो तेरी मर्जी, वह तू पूरी करना।
क्योंकि हम तो यह भी नहीं जानते, क्या मांगें? हम तो गलत ही मांगेंगे, क्योंकि हम गलत हैं। हमारी तो मांग भी उपद्रव होगी। और तुम्हारे पूरे जीवन की कथा यही है कि जो तुमने मांगा, वह तुम्हें मिल गया, फिर तुम उससे परेशान हो रहे हो। न मिलता तो रोते; मिल गया तो रो रहे हो। और तुम कभी गौर करके नहीं देखते।
इसलिए ईश्वर को दोष न देते हुए जो आप को ईश्वर ने दिया है उसका हमेशा धन्यवाद करो

I have heard that there is a very ancient story in Tibet. A man returned from a long journey and stayed overnight at his friend’s house. While discussing his travels, he told his friend that he had come across something very unique.
“I had thought that when I returned, I would give it to my friend. But now I am afraid—should I give it to you or not? I am afraid because the results I have seen are very dangerous.
I have found an amulet that grants three wishes—whatever you ask for comes true. I myself tried asking for three wishes. They were fulfilled, but now I regret why I asked for them.
Before me, my other friends also asked for three wishes. Now everyone is beating their chests and banging their heads in regret. I thought I would give it to you, but now I am afraid.”
The friend became excited and said, “What are you saying—whether to give it or not? Where is the amulet? We cannot wait any longer. Who knows about tomorrow?”
His wife also insisted strongly that the amulet be brought out. The traveler said, “Let me think, because the outcomes have all been bad.”
The friend replied, “You must not have asked properly. You must have wished wrongly.”
Every person thinks that others are suffering because they wished wrongly, and believes, “I will wish correctly.”
But no one realizes—until you yourself are right, how can your wishes be right? Wishes arise from within you.
Neither the friend nor the wife listened. After much insistence, the traveler handed over the amulet and left sadly. Staying till morning had become impossible.
The couple started thinking—what should we wish for? For a long time, they had desired at least one hundred thousand rupees in the house. Becoming a lakhpati was a very big thing in Tibet. They decided to fulfill that wish first and think about the rest later.
They asked for one hundred thousand rupees.
As soon as a wish was made, the amulet would jerk and fall from the hand, indicating that the wish had been accepted. About fifteen minutes later, there was a knock at the door.
News came that their son, who was serving in the king’s army, had been killed, and the king had granted a reward of one hundred thousand rupees. The wife began wailing and beating her chest, crying, “What has happened?”
She immediately said, “Ask the second wish right now—that our son be brought back to life.”
The father hesitated, remembering the result of the first wish. But the wife insisted desperately, saying, “Don’t delay! What if they bury him? What if the body decomposes? Ask quickly!”
So the second wish was made—that their son be returned. The amulet fell. Fifteen minutes later, there was a knock at the door. They heard the sound of footsteps and the voice saying, “Father.”
Both were terrified. The son had returned so quickly? The father looked outside—no one was visible. He looked through the window—still no one, yet there was movement.
The son had returned as a ghost, because his body had already been buried. Both husband and wife were terrified. Should they open the door or not? No matter how much you love someone, if they return as a ghost, courage collapses.
The father said, “Wait, we still have one wish left.” He prayed to the amulet, “Please free us from this son. Otherwise, he will haunt us for life. If this ghost stays in our house, deliver us from it.”
That very night, the man went and returned the amulet to his friend and said, “Throw it away somewhere. Never give it to anyone again.”
The entire story of your life is hidden in this amulet’s story. Whatever you ask for, you get. If you don’t get it, you suffer. If you do get it, you still suffer.
The poor appear unhappy; the rich appear even more unhappy. The unmarried are troubled; the married beat their chests and bang their heads. Those without children wander among saints seeking blessings, and those with children say, “How do we get rid of this trouble?”
If you have something, you cry. If you have nothing, you cry. The fundamental reason is that you yourself are not right. Therefore, whatever you desire is also wrong.
That is why a wise person does not say to God, “Fulfill my prayers.” Instead, he says, “Fulfill Your will.”
Because we do not even know what to ask for. We will ask wrongly, because we ourselves are wrong. Our wishes themselves become disturbances.
Your entire life story is this: whatever you asked for, you received—and then you suffered from it. If you didn’t get it, you cried; if you got it, you cried. Yet you never reflect on this.
Therefore, instead of blaming God, always be thankful for what God has given you.
