🌺 The Mysterious Friendship Between Bali and Ravana, Born Out of Their Fear of Hanuman 🌺
When Devarshi Narada learned about the divine child growing in Anjana’s womb, he informed Bali about it.
Upon hearing this from Narada, fear and jealousy arose in Bali’s heart. He began to worry that when the child grew up and revealed his dvine powers, he might threaten Bali’s strength and position as the King of the Vanaras.
Driven by this fear, Bali attempted to destroy the child before his birth. According to this tale, he melted five metals—gold, copper, iron, tin, and zinc—and sent them into Anjana’s womb. However, the child, blessed with the power of Rudra, remained unharmed. Instead, those five metals transformed into ornaments that adorned his ears.
When the time came, the divine child was born from Anjana’s womb. He would later become renowned throughout the world as Mahaveer Hanuman.
As news of Hanuman’s growing strength and extraordinary prowess reached Bali, his jealousy intensified. He made several attempts to kill Hanuman, but every attempt ended in failure.
Eventually, Bali undertook severe penance to please Lord Indra, the king of the gods. After many years, Indra appeared before him.
Indra said,
“Bali, I am pleased with your penance. Ask for a boon.”
Bali replied,
“Grant me a boon that will make me more powerful than Hanuman.”
Indra said,
“Hanuman is an incarnation of Rudra’s divine essence. Such a boon is not possible. Ask for something else.”
Bali then said,
“Grant me the power that half the strength of anyone who comes to fight me will be absorbed into my body.”
Lord Indra replied,
“So be it!”
Having received the boon, Bali was overjoyed. Overwhelmed by pride in his newfound power, he decided to test his strength by striking an enormous rock with all his might. A massive fragment broke off and flew a great distance.
By chance, the fragment landed at a place where Ravana was performing penance to Lord Brahma, with a sacrificial altar set up nearby. The falling rock destroyed the altar and disrupted Ravana’s penance.
Furious, Ravana approached Bali and roared,
“You have interrupted my penance! Now you shall suffer the consequences!”
Bali asked,
“Who are you?”
Ravana assumed a gigantic form and declared,
“I am Dashanana Ravana! The conqueror of the three worlds!”
Ravana launched an attack on Bali. Bali thought to himself,
“Fighting this fool will also give me an opportunity to test my boon.”
As the battle began, Indra’s boon took effect, and half of Ravana’s strength was absorbed into Bali’s body. Ravana gradually began to lose his power. Bali then seized him and pinned him beneath his armpit.
Ravana struggled with all his might to escape, but he could not free himself. Meanwhile, Bali continued with his evening prayers while holding Ravana tightly beneath his arm.
Humiliated, Ravana said,
“Despite possessing such immense strength, you do not receive the respect you deserve. Everyone considers Hanuman superior to you.”
The moment Bali heard Hanuman’s name, he became furious.
“Do not utter the name of that monkey in my presence!” he shouted.
Ravana realized that Bali, too, harbored deep hostility toward Hanuman. He said,
“Bali, you cannot defeat Hanuman on your own. Strength alone is not enough to destroy him. You also need demonic power and cunning intelligence. I can provide you with both. If we join forces, your strength and my schemes can work together against Hanuman.”
Hearing this proposal, Bali released Ravana. As soon as he was freed, Ravana breathed a sigh of relief. Bali accepted his offer of friendship.
Ravana then kindled a sacred fire. With the fire as their witness, the two clasped hands and swore an oath of friendship.
This story was written by the ‘Jai Hanuman’ page.
Thus, their mutual hostility toward Hanuman brought Bali, the King of the Vanaras, and Ravana, the mighty ruler of Lanka, together in friendship.
However, neither of them knew that the very child they had attempted to destroy before his birth would one day become Mahaveer Hanuman—the supreme devotee of Lord Shri Ram, whose extraordinary courage, devotion, and glory would earn him an eternal place in the hearts of people across the world.
