English:
King Vikram once again brought Betal down from the tree, carried him over his shoulder, and silently began walking along the path. As they journeyed through the darkness, Betal began telling him another story.
In the city of Kanakpur lived an extremely wealthy merchant named Chandrabhan. He had a beautiful daughter named Madansena, whose marriage had been arranged with a virtuous and well-mannered merchant named Dharmadatta.
A few days before the wedding, Madansena was strolling through her garden when a young man named Somdatt arrived. Enchanted by her beauty, he approached her and expressed his love for her. Madansena politely refused his proposal, explaining that her marriage had already been arranged. However, Somdatt refused to give up.
To free herself from his persistent advances, Madansena made him a promise. She said, "After my wedding, on my wedding night, I will come to you before going to my husband. Only after that will I accept my husband as my life partner."
Somdatt agreed to this promise.
The wedding took place, and on the night of her marriage, Madansena sat sorrowfully in her room. When her husband, Dharmadatta, asked her the reason for her sadness, she honestly told him about the promise she had made to Somdatt.
Impressed by her truthfulness, Dharmadatta replied, "Keeping one's word is a matter of honour and righteousness. Go to Somdatt without fear and fulfil your promise."
At midnight, Madansena, adorned with jewellery, set out alone to meet Somdatt.
On the way, a thief stopped her and began snatching her ornaments. Crying, Madansena told him her entire story. She explained that she had to fulfil her promise and assured him that, on her return, she would hand over all her jewellery to him.
The thief was deeply impressed by Madansena's honesty. He allowed her to continue her journey safely.
When Madansena reached Somdatt, she explained everything to him, including how her husband had permitted her to honour her promise.
Hearing this, Somdatt experienced a change of heart. He thought to himself, "If her husband is so noble and this woman is so truthful, deceiving her would be a sin."
He began to regard Madansena as his sister and respectfully sent her back without harming her or taking advantage of her trust.
On her return journey, Madansena met the thief again and offered him her jewellery as promised. However, the thief, moved by her character and truthfulness, refused to take anything. Instead, he safely escorted her back home.
Having finished the story, Betal asked King Vikram:
"Tell me, O King! Among these three men—her husband Dharmadatta, her admirer Somdatt, and the thief—who was the most generous and possessed the noblest character?"
King Vikram replied:
"Of the three, the thief demonstrated the greatest sacrifice.
The husband, Dharmadatta, allowed his wife to visit another man because he feared the consequences of breaking a promise and the possibility that his wife might otherwise feel she had committed a sin.
The admirer, Somdatt, gave up his desire because he felt ashamed and humbled by Dharmadatta's noble conduct.
But the thief had no social obligation to protect Madansena's honour. By profession and intention, he was a wrongdoer, and he could easily have stolen her precious jewellery without fearing any immediate punishment. Yet he overcame his greed and chose to respect her honesty and moral principles.
Therefore, the thief's renunciation was the most selfless and noble of all."
As soon as King Vikram finished speaking, Betal burst into laughter, flew away, and returned to hang upside down from the peepal tree once again.
