English:
Once, King Aja went into the forest for a leisurely stroll. During his journey, he came across a beautiful lake. In the middle of the lake was a magnificent lotus flower that appeared extraordinarily beautiful.
Finally, a divine voice echoed from the heavens, saying, “O King! You are without children, and therefore, you are not worthy of obtaining this lotus.”
These words struck King Aja deeply and filled his heart with sorrow. He returned to his palace, troubled by the thought that he had no offspring, despite being a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva became aware of King Aja’s distress and decided to intervene. He summoned Dharmaraja, the lord of righteousness and justice, and instructed him to arrange for a Brahmin to reach the city of Ayodhya so that circumstances might arise through which King Aja could be blessed with a child.
Far away, on the banks of the sacred Sarayu River, a poor Brahmin and his wife lived in a small hut. They struggled to make ends meet and lived a simple life devoted to their faith.
One day, the Brahmin visited King Aja’s royal court. He explained his difficult circumstances and requested alms from the king.
King Aja, being generous and compassionate, offered him gold coins from the royal treasury. However, the Brahmin refused to accept them, saying, “Your Majesty, this wealth belongs to your subjects. Please give me something that belongs to you personally.”
The king then removed the precious necklace he wore around his neck and offered it to the Brahmin. Yet the Brahmin refused once again, explaining that the king’s ornaments, too, were the property of the kingdom and its people.
King Aja was deeply saddened. He felt helpless because a poor Brahmin was leaving his court empty-handed, despite his sincere desire to help him.
That evening, King Aja decided to disguise himself as a labourer and venture into the city in search of work.
After walking for some time, he arrived at a blacksmith’s workshop. Without revealing his royal identity, he humbly requested work and began assisting the blacksmith.
Throughout the night, the king worked tirelessly, hammering and shaping iron. When morning arrived, he received a single coin, known as a tanka, as payment for his labour.
King Aja took the coin and went to the Brahmin’s house. The Brahmin was not at home, so the king handed the coin to his wife and asked her to give it to her husband when he returned.
After some time, the Brahmin came home. His wife gave him the coin, explaining that it had been sent by the king.
The Brahmin took the coin and threw it onto the ground.
What happened next was astonishing!
The moment the coin struck the ground, a deep hole appeared at that very spot. Astonished, the Brahmin began digging into the earth.
To his amazement, a magnificent golden chariot emerged from the hole and ascended into the sky.
The Brahmin continued digging, and a second golden chariot appeared, rising towards the heavens just like the first.
One after another, nine golden chariots emerged from the earth and disappeared into the sky.
Finally, when the Brahmin dug further, a tenth golden chariot appeared. However, unlike the previous nine, this chariot did not ascend into the heavens. Instead, it descended and came to rest on the ground.
A baby boy was seated upon the tenth chariot.
The Brahmin was astonished by this extraordinary sight. He carefully took the child and proceeded to King Aja’s royal court.
Upon reaching the palace, the Brahmin presented the child to King Aja and said:
“O King, please accept this child as your son. He has appeared through the miraculous power of the single coin you gave me. Nine golden chariots emerged before him and ascended into the heavens, while the tenth chariot remained on the earth with this child. Therefore, this child and the tenth chariot belong to you.”
King Aja was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. His long-standing sorrow over being childless finally came to an end.
According to this traditional legend, the miraculous child was none other than King Dasharatha, the father of Lord Shri Rama.
According to the story, Maharaja Dasharatha’s original name was Manu. He later became famous as Dasharatha because he possessed the extraordinary ability to travel with his chariot in all ten directions.
The name Dasharatha is traditionally associated with the Sanskrit words dasha, meaning “ten,” and ratha, meaning “chariot.”
Thus, this fascinating legend explains the miraculous birth of King Dasharatha, who would later become the father of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Spiritual Message: This story highlights the importance of humility, selfless service, generosity, and devotion. King Aja’s willingness to work with his own hands to help a poor Brahmin demonstrates that true greatness lies not merely in royal power or wealth, but in compassion and sincere service to others.
