English:
When we hear the name Ravana, images of a mighty warrior, a great ascetic, and an
arrogant king come to mind. But Ravana w
as also a husband. He was married to Mandodari, the daughter of Mayasura. Mandodari was a devoted wife, an intelligent woman, and a woman deeply rooted in dharma. The marriage of Ravana and Mandodari was not merely a union between two individuals; it was a union of two lineages, a political alliance, and the beginning of a tragic love story.
The story of Mandodari's birth is also unusual.
Mayasura was a great architect who had built many magnificent cities for the Danavas. His wife, Hema, was an apsara.
Once, Mayasura was performing penance in a forest. There, he saw two apsaras. According to one account, Hema became pregnant, and in due course, she gave birth to a daughter.
According to certain stories, Mandodari was born from a frog. It is said that Mayasura found a female frog that possessed the divine radiance of an apsara. Mandodari was born from it. Therefore, some explanations associate her name with manduka, meaning frog.
However, the more widely known account describes her as the daughter of Mayasura and Hema. She was extraordinarily beautiful from birth. She had large eyes, thick hair, and a melodious voice.
Mayasura raised her with great love and care. He ensured that she received an excellent education in scriptures. Mandodari was knowledgeable about the Vedas, Puranas, and principles of statecraft. She was a woman of wisdom and righteousness.
When Ravana became the king of Lanka, he considered forming matrimonial alliances to strengthen his kingdom. According to the story, Shukracharya advised him:
"O King, Mayasura is a great architect. Establish a relationship with him. His daughter Mandodari is exceptionally beautiful and virtuous. You should marry her."
Ravana sent messengers to Mayasura's residence. The messenger conveyed the proposal:
"Ravana, the lord of Lanka, wishes to marry your daughter."
Initially, Mayasura hesitated. Ravana was known for his fierce temperament. However, he thought that Ravana was a powerful ruler, descended from the sage Vishrava, and a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva. He wondered where he could find a more powerful and distinguished groom.
Mayasura then asked his daughter for her opinion. Mandodari replied:
"Father, whatever you consider appropriate will be acceptable to me."
Mayasura accepted the marriage proposal.
The wedding preparations were carried out with great splendour. Lanka was decorated like a bride. Golden arches adorned the streets, and lamps embellished with precious jewels illuminated the city.
Although the customs of the Rakshasa lineage were different, Ravana was the son of a Brahmin sage. According to this account, the wedding was conducted following Vedic traditions.
Vishrava himself attended the wedding and performed the role of the priest.
Mayasura performed the kanyadaan, the ceremonial giving away of his daughter. He also presented Ravana with many gifts, including divine weapons, precious jewels, and fine garments.
When Ravana and Mandodari saw each other in the wedding pavilion, both were pleased. Ravana thought, "How beautiful my wife is!" Mandodari thought, "What a powerful and radiant husband I have!"
The couple took seven sacred steps around the holy fire. Ravana held Mandodari's hand and promised:
"I shall care for you and honour you."
Mandodari also made her vow:
"I shall uphold the duties of a devoted wife and stand beside you through happiness and sorrow."
After their marriage, their married life initially passed in happiness. Mandodari managed the royal household of Lanka. She listened to the grievances of the people and gave generously to those in need.
Ravana loved her deeply. Whenever he returned from battle, he would meet Mandodari first. He also sought her advice on important matters.
Mandodari was intelligent and understood politics. On several occasions, she offered Ravana sound advice.
When Ravana fought against the gods, Mandodari cautioned him:
"My lord, victory is desirable, but do not allow pride to overcome you."
Ravana would laugh and reply:
"Do not worry. Everything is under control."
Mandodari and Ravana had three sons, according to this account: Meghnad, Akshayakumara, and Atikaya. Meghnad was the eldest. It is said that thunder rumbled when he was born, which led to his name, meaning the roar of the clouds. Later, after defeating Indra, he became known as Indrajit.
The birth of their sons brought further happiness into their married life.
Mandodari was not merely beautiful; she was also learned. She possessed knowledge of the Vedas and religious scriptures.
She was regarded as a devoted wife. She considered Ravana her husband and remained committed to him.
She was compassionate, too. Whenever Ravana became angry and punished someone, Mandodari would try to persuade him to show mercy.
She was also far-sighted. She understood the consequences of dangerous decisions and repeatedly warned Ravana about the calamities that might follow.
According to some accounts, Ravana had several wives. Mandodari was his chief queen, known as the Pattamahishi. Among his other wives was Dhanyamalini.
Nevertheless, Mandodari held a prominent position in his life. Ravana respected her and sometimes listened to her counsel.
A serious rift developed in their married life when Ravana abducted Sita.
When Mandodari heard what had happened, she was horrified. She approached Ravana and asked:
"My lord, what have you done? Abducting another man's wife is a grave sin. You are learned in the scriptures and knowledgeable about dharma. Why, then, have you committed such an unrighteous act?"
Ravana replied:
"You are a woman and do not understand politics. Sita is extraordinarily beautiful. I shall make her my queen."
Mandodari began to weep.
"My lord, Sita is no ordinary woman. She is like fire itself. Do not keep her in Lanka. Return her to Rama."
Ravana refused to listen.
Mandodari tried again:
"My lord, Rama is no ordinary human being. He is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Do not make an enemy of him."
Ravana became furious.
"You do not understand my strength. I am the conqueror of the three worlds!"
Disappointed and helpless, Mandodari returned to her chambers.
Mandodari did not give up. She repeatedly tried to persuade Ravana to return Sita.
When Hanuman arrived in Lanka and set the city ablaze, Mandodari warned Ravana:
"My lord, look at what has happened. This was merely Rama's messenger. What will happen when Rama himself arrives?"
When Rama's army constructed a bridge across the ocean, Mandodari again cautioned Ravana:
"Anyone who can build a bridge across the sea cannot be an ordinary human being."
Later, when Kumbhakarna was killed in battle, Mandodari fell at Ravana's feet.
"My lord, there is still time. Return Sita and save Lanka."
Ravana replied:
"Retreating now would be an act of cowardice."
Mandodari answered:
"Bowing before dharma is not cowardice."
Yet Ravana remained unmoved.
On the final night of the war, Mandodari approached Ravana and helped prepare him for battle. She adorned him and said:
"My lord, tomorrow's battle will decide everything."
Ravana reassured her:
"My beloved, do not worry. Tomorrow, I shall defeat Rama and return victorious."
Tears filled Mandodari's eyes. Deep in her heart, she feared that Ravana would never return.
She said:
"My lord, if I have truly been a devoted wife, then grant me one final wish. Return Sita to Rama."
Ravana embraced her and replied:
"My beloved, it is too late now."
According to this retelling, the couple spent the night together. At dawn, Ravana departed for battle, and Mandodari accompanied him to the palace gates.
It was their final farewell.
Ravana was killed in battle, and the terrible news reached Lanka.
Mandodari fainted upon hearing it. When she regained consciousness, she went to the battlefield and saw Ravana's lifeless body. She embraced him and wept bitterly.
She cried:
"My lord, I warned you repeatedly, but you refused to listen. Your knowledge, your penance, and your extraordinary power have all been rendered futile by your pride."
Her grief moved everyone present to tears. Even Rama was saddened by her suffering.
According to this account, Rama instructed Vibhishana to honour Mandodari and ensure that she was treated with dignity.
Vibhishana consoled Mandodari and arranged for Ravana's final rites.
According to certain traditions, Vibhishana later married Mandodari. Some accounts associate this with the customs and political circumstances of the Rakshasa kingdom.
Mandodari continued to live in Lanka and, in traditional retellings, maintained a life of dignity and purity.
She is counted among the Panchakanyas in a well-known Hindu tradition: Ahalya, Draupadi, Sita, Tara, and Mandodari. Remembering these five revered women is traditionally believed to help cleanse one's sins.
The marriage of Ravana and Mandodari offers several important lessons.
First, mutual respect matters in marriage. Ravana and Mandodari were both accomplished in their own ways. Their relationship initially benefited from Mandodari's wisdom and Ravana's respect for her counsel.
Second, one should listen to a spouse's sound advice. Mandodari repeatedly warned Ravana against his destructive choices. Had he listened to her, the devastation that followed might have been avoided.
Third, devotion and loyalty can coexist with moral courage. Mandodari remained committed to her husband, but she never supported his wrongdoing. She continually tried to guide him towards dharma.
Fourth, love should not become blind obedience. Mandodari loved Ravana deeply, yet she did not approve of his unjust actions. She consistently urged him to choose the righteous path.
Ravana's marriage could have become an example of an enduring and harmonious partnership. He had a wife who was wise, devoted, and capable of recognising the dangers he could not see. Yet his arrogance prevented him from accepting the truth she spoke.
Even today, Mandodari is remembered in traditional stories as an example of a devoted, intelligent, and righteous wife. Her story also reminds husbands and wives alike of the importance of listening to one another, especially when difficult truths must be spoken.
Ravana died, but Mandodari's story endured. Ravana is remembered for his extraordinary abilities and his fatal arrogance, while Mandodari is remembered for her devotion, wisdom, and unwavering efforts to guide her husband towards righteousness.
The enduring message of their story is that knowledge and power cannot protect a person who refuses to listen to wisdom.
