English:
This story dates back to 1974–75. Near Jaipur, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman where an annual fair is held; people from the surrounding villages flock to this fair in large numbers.
Shops belonging to confectioners and other vendors are set up at the fair.
A Sadhu (ascetic) approached a greedy confectioner. He placed a chavanni (a twenty-five paise coin) in the confectioner's hand and said, "Give me a pav (quarter-kilogram) of pedas."
The confectioner replied, "Maharaj! How can you get a pav of pedas for four annas? A pav of pedas costs twelve annas, not four."
The Sadhu said, "All I have is this chavanni. God will bless you; just give me the pedas."
The confectioner retorted, "Maharaj! Do you want something for free? Who do you think you are... craving pedas?"
The Sadhu said, "If you won't give the pedas, fine—but at least return the chavanni."
The confectioner said, "The chavanni is lying in the pit. Go on, you can go into the pit too."
The Sadhu thought to himself, "This is the limit!"
He asked again, "So, you won't give the pedas and you won't return the money either?"
"I won't. Is this your father's property?"
Hearing this, the Sadhu went and sat on a stone slab. A firm resolve holds the power to alter circumstances.
Where there is a noble resolve, miracles of nature begin to unfold.
As night fell, the shopkeeper counted his cash. He had four hundred and ninety rupees; he tied the money in a bag and, hoping to round the total up to five hundred, began trying to woo customers.
Just then, four sturdy monkeys appeared out of nowhere. One monkey snatched the bag containing the four hundred and ninety rupees and climbed up a tree.
Another monkey snatched away a large platter of sweets. The third monkey took some pedas (milk-based sweets) and placed them in the lap of the sadhu sitting on the stone slab, while the fourth monkey began leaping about and making a racket.
Seeing this, the shopkeeper was terrified—he felt as though his life was slipping away. He tried various tactics to make the monkey drop the money bag.
He tempted it with jalebis, pakoras, and the like, but that monkey was no ordinary one; it simply refused to let go of the bag.
Finally, someone suggested that he should clasp the feet of the very sadhu he had insulted.
The confectioner went, fell at the sadhu's feet, and said, "Maharaj! I made a mistake."
Saints are compassionate beings.
The sadhu replied, "If you have made a mistake, seek forgiveness from your father—from the One who is the Father of us all. What do I know of this?
Ask for forgiveness from the One who sent the monkeys."
The confectioner took the remaining pedas and went to the temple of Lord Hanuman. After offering the sweets as bhog (sacred offering), he began to pray: "Hail, Hail Hanuman Gosain... protect me..."
He distributed some of the pedas as prasad and brought a quarter-seer (approx. 250 grams) of them to place at the sadhu's feet.
The sadhu asked, "Where is my chavanni (quarter-rupee coin)?"
"It fell into the pit."
The sadhu said, "You used to tell me to fall into the pit. Now, you fall into the pit and retrieve the coin for me."
The confectioner found the coin in the pit, washed it, and placed it at the sadhu's feet.
Praying to Lord Hanuman, the sadhu said, "Oh Lord! He is Your child too. Please show mercy."
In a flash, the monkey tossed the bag of money in front of the confectioner. People gathered the money and handed it back to him.
Where the monkeys came from and where they vanished to—no one ever found out.
