🍁Sweet Fruit in Exchange for a Stone🍁
One day, the great and just King of Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, was touring his kingdom with his soldiers. His aim was to personally assess the well-being of his subjects and understand their problems. As the Maharaja rode calmly on his horse, a stone suddenly struck his shoulder. The soldiers immediately became alert, suspecting that someone had attacked the Maharaja.
The commander ordered, "Seize whoever committed this act of audacity and bring them here at once!"
Shortly after, the soldiers brought a frail, elderly woman before the Maharaja. She was trembling with fear; the deep lines of poverty and hunger were clearly visible on her face.
In a calm voice, the Maharaja asked, "Mother, was it you who threw the stone?"
Tears began to stream from the old woman's eyes. In a choked voice, she said, "Your Majesty, I have three small children. They haven't had a single grain of food in two days and are crying out in hunger. I had gone into the forest in search of food when I spotted a tree laden with sweet fruit. Having no other way to pluck them, I tried to knock the fruit down by throwing a stone. Unfortunately, the stone hit you instead. I have made a grave mistake; please forgive me."
Upon hearing the old woman's heart-wrenching story, all the soldiers present bowed their heads in humility. The Maharaja remained silent for a few moments. Then, smiling, he summoned his treasurer and ordered, "Give this mother enough gold coins, grain, and clothing so that her children never have to go to sleep hungry again."
The commander was astonished to hear this. He asked respectfully, "Your Majesty, why is the person who threw a stone at you being rewarded instead of punished?" Maharaja Ranjit Singh smiled and said, “Commander, when a tree yields sweet fruit even after being struck by stones, why shouldn't we, as human beings, show compassion and generosity? If we use our power solely to punish, people will fear us; but if we use it to show compassion, they will hold a place for us in their hearts.”
Hearing the Maharaja’s words, the soldiers' eyes filled with reverence. The old woman returned home, repeatedly showering blessings upon him. That day, the Maharaja’s kindness and sense of justice became the talk of the entire kingdom.
Moral:
True greatness lies not in seeking revenge, but in embracing the path of kindness, forgiveness, and compassion. Understanding the plight of others is the essence of true humanity.
