[09:54, 09/09/2026] Astro Bhagyaraj Gupt: 🍁
English:
[09:51, 09/09/2026] Astro Bhagyaraj Gupt: A highly learned and pious Brahmin named 'Yajnadatta' lived in the city of Kampilya. His son was named Gunanidhi. Due to his father's excessive indulgence and his mother's over-protection, Gunanidhi fell into bad company. He took up gambling and drinking, and began stealing valuable items and jewelry from his father's home to give to fellow gamblers.
When his father discovered this, he became enraged and banished Gunanidhi from the home and the family lineage.
Wandering from place to place, hungry and thirsty, Gunanidhi arrived at a dense forest. He had not had a single grain of food for days. Coincidentally, it was the day of Mahashivratri. Famished, Gunanidhi saw devotees carrying delicious offerings—sweets, fruits, and delicacies—towards an ancient Shiva temple located within the forest. Gunanidhi thought, "Stealing that food meant for the temple offering is the only way to satisfy my hunger." He quietly followed the devotees to the temple.
Inside the temple, the devotees performed worship throughout the four watches of the night and sang hymns. After midnight, when all the devotees and priests had fallen asleep from exhaustion, Gunanidhi stealthily approached the Shiva Linga. At that moment, the ghee lamp placed before the Linga in the sanctum sanctorum was flickering low and was on the verge of going out. Because the light was dim, Gunanidhi could not clearly see the offerings placed upon the Shiva Linga; he wanted to see the platter of food clearly. To prevent the lamp from going out, Gunanidhi immediately tore a dry strip of cloth from the corner of the dhoti he was wearing, fashioned it into a wick, placed it in the lamp, and lit it. As soon as the new cloth wick was inserted, the lamp flared up brightly, casting a divine radiance across the entire sanctum sanctorum and the Shiva Linga. Although Gunanidhi’s sole intention had been to steal food, he had—unwittingly—performed a divine act of offering light (*Deepotsarga*) before the Shiva Linga of Mahadeva, the Lord of Lords, during the sacred night of Mahashivaratri.
Just as Gunanidhi picked up the platter of food and attempted to flee, his foot struck a guard sleeping at the temple threshold. The guard raised an alarm, shouting "Thief! Thief!", and the sentries shot an arrow at the fleeing Gunanidhi. Struck by the arrow, Gunanidhi collapsed on the spot and breathed his last. Within moments, terrifying messengers of Yama arrived to bind his sinful subtle body with their noose and drag him to Yamaloka. However, at that very instant, the divine attendants (*Ganas*) of Lord Shiva—bearing the trident and *damaru*—appeared and blocked the path of Yama's messengers.
The messengers of Yama argued:
"Throughout his life, Gunanidhi has been a wicked man, a gambler, and a sinner. He even came to the temple to commit theft. He deserves nothing but Hell!"
Shiva’s attendants replied in a calm voice:
"Whatever his original intention may have been, on the night of Mahashivaratri, he fashioned a wick from his own garment and rekindled a dying lamp before Mahadeva’s Shiva Linga. Mahadeva—the Lord of Lords and the easily pleased *Ashutosh*—is immensely pleased by this act of offering light, performed even if unknowingly. He is now entitled not to Yamaloka, but to Shivaloka." Through the grace of Lord Shiva, all of Gunanidhi's accumulated past sins were incinerated in an instant. He became King Dama of Kalinga—a mighty ruler and a devotee of Shiva—who initiated the tradition of offering lamps at every Shiva temple throughout his kingdom. In the subsequent *Kalpa* (cosmic age), that same soul was born as the son of the great sage Vishrava; he performed severe penance for Lord Shiva in the Himalayas. Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati appeared before him in person, accepted him as their supreme friend, and appointed him as the Lord of Wealth (Dhanapati) Kubera—the guardian of the northern direction and the master of all the riches and treasures (such as Padma, Mahapadma, etc.) across the three worlds.
