🍁The True Wealth of Righteousness🍁
This story dates back to the era of the Mahabharata. Near Hastinapur, there was a renowned ashram belonging to the sage Dhaumya. Many princes and *Brahmacharis* (students) received their education there. The sage imparted knowledge not only of the Vedas and weaponry but also of righteousness, compassion, and the virtue of renunciation.
He had two disciples—Satyaketu and Lobhit. Satyaketu was simple, compassionate, and content, whereas Lobhit, though intelligent, was consumed by an intense greed for wealth and luxury.
The sage gave each of them a bag. Satyaketu’s bag was filled with grains, fruits, medicinal herbs, and clothes, while Lobhit’s bag was empty.
The sage instructed Satyaketu, "My child! Offer the contents of this bag to anyone you encounter on the journey who is hungry, thirsty, sick, or helpless."
Then, turning to Lobhit, he said, "And as for you, place any valuable item you find along the way into your bag."
The two set out on their journey.
Wherever Satyaketu saw a person in distress, he would help them with love. At times, he would offer fruit to an elderly sage; at others, he would feed a hungry child or provide medicine to an injured traveler. Gradually, his bag grew lighter, yet his heart filled with joy and contentment.
Meanwhile, Lobhit found copper coins along the path, followed by silver ornaments. As he proceeded, he discovered gold coins and gold bricks inside an abandoned cave. Without a second thought, he stuffed them all into his bag.
His bag became so heavy that he could barely walk. Yet, his greed would not let him stop. He kept thinking, "If I return with this much wealth, my life will be transformed." After walking only a short distance, his body gave way to exhaustion. Drenched in sweat, he collapsed and lost consciousness. Wild animals began to prowl around him in the forest.
When Satyaketu was returning, he found his companion lying unconscious. Without delay, he set aside the heavy bag, gave him water and medicine, and supported him on his shoulder to bring him back to the ashram.
When the two arrived before Maharshi Dhaumya, Lobhit stood with his head bowed in shame.
The Maharshi smiled and said, "My child! This world, too, is a journey. One who hoards only wealth, gold, and material possessions finds their life crushed under that very burden. But one who shares in the suffering of others finds their own burden lightened."
He continued, "The *Dharma* of the Mahabharata teaches that a person's greatest wealth lies in sacrifice, service, and compassion. Gold bricks never make anyone truly great, yet the gift of even a single loaf of bread can make a person immortal."
That day, tears of remorse flowed from Lobhit's eyes. He renounced his attachment to gold and resolved to walk the path of righteousness, service, and charity for the rest of his life.
💐 Moral:
Hoarding wealth weighs a person down, whereas compassion, service, and charity make life light, pure, and joyful. This is the true *Dharma* of the Mahabharata.
