Madhukar Shah and his wife, Ganeshkuwari, are regarded as the living incarnations of Dasharatha and Kausalya. In the Treta Yuga, King Dasharatha could not perform the coronation of his son, Shri Ram; this unfulfilled wish of his was realized in Orchha during the Kali Yuga.
The story of Ramraja’s arrival from Ayodhya to Orchha is truly captivating and steeped in deep faith. One day, King Madhukar Shah of Orchha urged his wife, Ganeshkuwari, to accompany him to Vrindavan to worship Lord Krishna. However, the Queen was an ardent devotee of Shri Ram and refused to go to Vrindavan. In a fit of anger, the King told her that if she was such a devoted follower of Ram, she should go and bring her Ram to Orchha.
The Queen traveled to Ayodhya and began her penance in a small hut near the Lakshman Fort on the banks of the Saryu River. During that time, the revered saint Tulsidas was also engaged in spiritual practice in Ayodhya. With the saint's blessings, the Queen's devotion grew even stronger, yet for several months, she did not catch a glimpse of Ramraja.
Finally, in despair, the Queen decided to end her life by jumping into the deep waters of the Saryu. It was there, in the unfathomable depths of the river, that she beheld Ramraja. She conveyed her purpose to Him and vowed to construct the Chaturbhuj Temple.
Ramraja agreed to come to Orchha but laid down three conditions: first, the journey would be undertaken on foot; second, the journey would take place only during the *Pushya Nakshatra*; and third, once His idol was installed at a specific location, it would never be moved again.
The Queen sent word to King Madhukar Shah that she was returning to Orchha with Ramraja. The King had the magnificent Chaturbhuj Temple constructed at a cost of crores to house the idol of Ramraja. However, upon reaching Orchha, the Queen installed the idol within her own palace. It was decided that the idol would be consecrated in the Chaturbhuj Temple at an auspicious moment.
Yet, the idol of Ramraja refused to move to the Chaturbhuj Temple. It is believed that Shri Ram had manifested here in His child form and was unwilling to leave His mother's palace to go to the temple. For this reason, Ram Raja still resides in that very palace today, while the Chaturbhuj Temple—built specifically for Him—remains without an idol.
It is a remarkable coincidence that the very day Ram Raja arrived in Orchha (in the year Samvat 1631) marked the completion of the *Ramcharitmanas*. It is said that the idol currently enshrined in Orchha is the same one Shri Ram had given to His mother, Kaushalya, during His exile. Mother Kaushalya used to offer *bhog* (ritual food offerings) to this idol of the child deity. Upon Shri Ram's return to Ayodhya, she had immersed the idol in the Sarayu River. It was in the mid-stream of the Sarayu that Ganesh Kunwari discovered this very idol.
Here, Shri Ram is worshipped as ‘Orchhadhish’ (the Lord of Orchha). Temples dedicated to Hanuman—namely Chhad-dari Hanuman, Bajariya Hanuman, and Lanka Hanuman—are situated around the Ram Raja Temple, forming what is considered a protective circle.
Other invaluable heritage sites in Orchha include the Lakshmi Temple, Panchmukhi Mahadev, Radhika Bihari Temple, Raja Mahal, Rai Praveen Mahal, Hardaul ki Baithak, Hardaul’s Samadhi, and the Jahangir Mahal with its magnificent paintings.
