English:
🍁The Pickpocket🍁
As soon as I stepped off the bus and reached for my trouser pocket, I stopped in my tracks. A section of the pocket had been slit open. Panicked, I frantically checked my other pockets, but found nothing there either.
My pocket had been picked.
And what was even in that pocket? Just 70 rupees and an unfinished letter I had written to my mother.
In that letter, I had written—
“Ma, I’ve lost my job. I won’t be able to send you money this month. Please take care of yourself…”
But that letter had been sitting in my pocket for the past three days. I hadn't been able to muster the courage to post it. I was afraid of how distressed Ma would be upon reading the news. She lived alone in the village and relied entirely on the money I sent each month to make ends meet.
I returned to my room with a heavy heart. That night, I lay awake for a long time, wondering—what would I write to Ma now? How would I send her money? What would she eat?
A few days later, the postman delivered a letter addressed to me. It was in Ma’s handwriting.
My hands began to tremble.
I thought, “Perhaps Ma has asked for money... maybe the rations at home have run out...”
With a sense of dread, I opened the letter.
But I was astonished by what Ma had written.
Ma had written—
“Son, I’ve received the money order for 2,000 rupees that you sent. You are so good! You have never been negligent about sending money. May God always keep you happy. I have prayed for you at the temple.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I read the letter.
I began to wonder—
“But I never sent any money... then who sent those 2,000 rupees to Ma?”
That mystery played on my mind for days. Then, one day, I received another letter. It bore neither a complete address nor the sender's name. Inside, a few lines were scrawled in uneven handwriting—
“Brother, I have sent a money order to your mother by combining the 70 rupees of yours with 1,930 rupees of my own.
Don't worry...
After all, a mother is the same for everyone, isn't she?
Be it your mother or mine...
A mother is, after all, a mother.
Why should she go hungry?”
At the end of the letter, only this was written—
“The pickpocket who picked your pocket.”
Tears streamed from my eyes as I read this.
The person I had been cursing as a thief had understood my mother's hunger and my own helplessness.
He hadn't just taken 70 rupees from my pocket... he had read the pain of a son hidden within my unfinished letter.
That day, I realized that a person is not defined solely by their actions. Sometimes, even within someone who has strayed onto the wrong path, humanity remains alive.
Moral
A person is defined not merely by their outward actions, but by the kindness, compassion, and humanity hidden within. The bond of motherhood connects every heart. This story poignantly portrays a mother's love, a son's helplessness, and the compassion of a stranger.
