👑 राजा शिवि का महात्याग! कबूतर की रक्षा के लिए दे दिया अपना पूरा शरीर

उशीनर देश के चक्रवर्ती राजा 'शिवि' अपनी दया, दानशीलता और शरणागत-रक्षा के लिए तीनों लोकों में विख्यात थे। उनका अटल नियम था कि उनके द्वार पर आया हुआ कोई भी याचक या प्राणों की भीख मांगने वाला प्राणी कभी खाली हाथ या असुरक्षित नहीं लौट सकता राजा के इस तपोबल और यश की परीक्षा लेने के लिए देवराज इंद्र और अग्निदेव ने एक विचित्र लीला रची।
अग्निदेव ने एक भयभीत कपोत (कबूतर) का रूप धारण किया और देवराज इंद्र एक भयानक, क्रूर श्येन (बाज) बन गए।
एक दिन राजा शिवि अपनी राजसभा में बैठे थे। तभी वह नन्हा कबूतर तीव्र गति से उड़ता हुआ आया और थर-थर कांपते हुए सीधे राजा शिवि की गोद में छिप गया कबूतर ने मनुष्य की वाणी में करुण पुकार की:
हे राजन! बाहर एक शिकारी बाज मुझे मार डालने के लिए मेरा पीछा कर रहा है। मैं आपकी शरण में आया हूँ, मेरे प्राणों की रक्षा कीजिए!राजा ने उस अबोध पक्षी पर हाथ फेरा और अभयदान देते हुए कहा—डरो मत, जब तक मेरे शरीर में प्राण हैं, कोई तुम्हारा बाल भी बांका नहीं कर सकता।
उसी क्षण वह शिकारी बाज झपटता हुआ राजसभा में पहुँचा और तीखी दृष्टि से राजा को देखकर बोला:
हे राजन! आप धर्म के ज्ञाता कहलाते हैं, परंतु आज आप मेरे साथ घोर अधर्म कर रहे हैं। विधाता ने इस कबूतर को मेरा प्राकृतिक आहार बनाया है। मैं भूख से मर रहा हूँ। यदि आपने मेरा आहार छीन लिया, तो भूख के कारण मेरे प्राण निकल जाएँगे, और मेरे भूखे बच्चे भी घोंसले में मर जाएँगे। एक जीव को बचाने के लिए दूसरे जीव को भूखा मारना क्या आपका धर्म है?राजा शिवि महान धर्म-संकट में पड़ गए। एक ओर भूखे बाज के प्राण थे, तो दूसरी ओर शरण में आए हुए कबूतर की रक्षा की प्रतिज्ञा।
राजा शिवि ने बाज से कहा:
हे पक्षीराज! मैं शरण में आए इस कबूतर को तुम्हें नहीं सौंप सकता। इसके बदले तुम मेरे राज्य का जो भी मांस, पशु, अन्न या धन चाहो, मैं तुम्हें अभी देने को तैयार हूँ बाज ने कुटिल मुस्कान के साथ कहा:
हे राजन! मुझे कोई दूसरा मांस नहीं चाहिए। यदि आपको इस कबूतर के प्राण इतने ही प्रिय हैं, तो इस कबूतर के भार (वज़न) के बराबर अपने दाहिने अंग का मांस तराजू पर तौलकर मुझे खाने को दीजिए!राजा शिवि का मुख प्रसन्नता से खिल उठा। उन्होंने बिना एक पल की हिचकिचाहट के कहा—मुझे तुम्हारी यह शर्त पूर्णतः स्वीकार है!
राजसभा में तुरंत एक विशाल तराजू मंगाई गई तराजू के एक पलड़े पर उस नन्हे कबूतर को बिठाया गया दूसरे पलड़े पर राजा शिवि ने अपनी तीक्ष्ण तलवार निकाली और अपने दाहिने पैर की जांघ से मांस काटकर रखना शुरू किया परंतु यह क्या! राजा जितना मांस काटकर पलड़े पर रखते, कबूतर वाला पलड़ा उतना ही भारी होकर नीचे झुक जाता राजा ने अपने हाथों, छाती और दूसरे अंगों से भी मांस के बड़े-बड़े टुकड़े काटकर रख दिए, फिर भी वह नन्हा कबूतर भारी ही रहा। पूरी सभा यह देखकर रोने लगी और हाहाकार मच गया।
जब राजा के शरीर का अधिकांश मांस कट चुका और वे पूरी तरह लहूलुहान हो गए, तब वे लड़खड़ाते हुए उठे राजा शिवि ने हाथ जोड़े और स्वयं तराजू के उस पलड़े पर जाकर बैठ गए राजा ने शांत और स्थिर वाणी में बाज से कहा:
हे बाज! अब मेरा यह संपूर्ण शरीर तुम्हारे सामने तराजू पर उपस्थित है। तुम इसे खाकर अपनी क्षुधा शांत करो और इस शरण में आए कबूतर को मुक्त करो जैसे ही राजा शिवि तराजू पर बैठे, उसी क्षण वह कबूतर और बाज दोनों अपने दिव्य स्वरूपों—अग्निदेव और देवराज इंद्र—में प्रकट हो गए!
आकाश से गंधर्वों ने दुंदुभियाँ बजाईं और पुष्पों की वर्षा होने लगी।
इंद्रदेव ने अश्रुपूर्ण नेत्रों से राजा शिवि को तराजू से उठाया और कहा:
"हे परम धर्मात्मा राजा शिवि! हम केवल आपकी शरणागत-वत्सलता और त्याग की परीक्षा लेने आए थे। तीनों लोकों में आपके जैसा निस्वार्थ, दयालु और धर्मनिष्ठ पुरुष न कभी हुआ है और न होगा अग्निदेव के स्पर्श मात्र से राजा शिवि का संपूर्ण शरीर तुरंत स्वस्थ, दिव्य और करोड़ों सूर्यों जैसा कांतिमान हो गया। देवताओं ने उन्हें आशीर्वाद दिया कि जब तक सूर्य और चंद्र आकाश में रहेंगे, तब तक राजा शिवि का यश तीनों लोकों में अमर रहेगा।

King Shibi, the sovereign ruler of the Ushinara kingdom, was renowned across the three worlds for his compassion, generosity, and commitment to protecting those who sought refuge with him. It was his unwavering vow that no petitioner or creature pleading for its life would ever leave his presence empty-handed or unprotected. To test the King's spiritual merit and renown, Indra (the King of Gods) and Agni (the God of Fire) orchestrated a unique divine play.
Agni assumed the form of a terrified dove, while Indra transformed into a fierce, predatory hawk.
One day, as King Shibi sat in his royal court, the little dove flew in at great speed; trembling violently, it sought shelter right in the King's lap. The dove cried out in a human voice, filled with anguish:
"O King! A predatory hawk is pursuing me, intent on killing me. I have come to you for refuge; please save my life!" The King stroked the helpless bird and, assuring it of safety, said, "Do not fear; as long as there is life in my body, no one can harm even a single feather of yours."
At that very moment, the predatory hawk swooped into the royal court. Fixing a piercing gaze upon the King, it spoke:
"O King! You are known as a knower of *Dharma* (righteousness), yet today you are committing a grave injustice against me. The Creator has ordained this dove as my natural prey. I am starving. If you snatch away my food, I shall perish from hunger, and my hungry chicks in the nest will die as well. Is it your *Dharma* to starve one creature to death in order to save another?" King Shibi found himself in a profound moral dilemma: on one side lay the life of the starving hawk, and on the other, his solemn vow to protect the dove that had sought his refuge.
King Shibi said to the hawk:
"O King of Birds! I cannot hand over this dove, which has come to me for sanctuary, to you." "In exchange, I am ready to give you whatever meat, livestock, grain, or wealth from my kingdom you desire," the hawk said with a cunning smile.
"O King! I do not want any other meat. If this dove's life is so precious to you, then weigh flesh from your own right side equal to the dove's weight on the scale and give it to me to eat!" King Shibi’s face lit up with joy. Without a moment's hesitation, he said, "I fully accept this condition of yours!"
A massive scale was immediately brought to the royal court. The tiny dove was placed on one pan of the scale. On the other pan, King Shibi drew his sharp sword and began slicing flesh from his right thigh to place upon it. But lo and behold! No matter how much flesh the King cut and placed on the pan, the side holding the dove grew heavier and sank lower. The King cut and placed large chunks of flesh from his arms, chest, and other parts of his body, yet the tiny dove remained heavier. The entire assembly wept at the sight, and an outcry of anguish filled the air.
When most of the flesh had been carved from his body and he was drenched in blood, the King rose unsteadily. King Shibi folded his hands and stepped onto the scale himself. In a calm and steady voice, he said to the hawk:
"O Hawk! Now my entire body lies before you on the scale. Eat it to satisfy your hunger and set free this dove that has sought refuge with me." The moment King Shibi sat on the scale, both the dove and the hawk revealed their divine forms—Agni-Deva (the Fire God) and Devraj Indra (the King of Gods)!
From the heavens, Gandharvas played celestial drums, and a shower of flowers rained down. With tear-filled eyes, Lord Indra lifted King Shibi from the scales and said:
"O supremely righteous King Shibi! We came merely to test your compassion for those who seek refuge and your spirit of sacrifice. Never before has there been—nor will there ever be—a man as selfless, compassionate, and righteous as you in the three worlds." At the mere touch of Lord Agni, King Shibi’s entire body instantly became healthy, divine, and radiant, shining with the brilliance of millions of suns. The gods blessed him, declaring that as long as the sun and moon endure in the heavens, King Shibi’s renown shall remain immortal across the three worlds.
