एक नगर में एक अत्यंत कुशल मूर्तिकार रहता था। उसकी बनाई मूर्तियाँ इतनी सजीव होती थीं कि पहली नज़र में कोई भी धोखा खा जाए। लोग उसकी कला की भूरि-भूरि प्रशंसा करते थे। धीरे-धीरे निरंतर प्रशंसा ने उसके भीतर यह गहरा अहंकार भर दिया कि वह इस पृथ्वी पर सबसे अद्वितीय प्राणी है और प्रकृति के नियमों से भी ऊपर है।
एक रात उसने स्वप्न देखा कि उसकी आयु पूरी हो चुकी है और यमदूत उसे लेने आ रहे हैं।
जागते ही वह मृत्यु के भय से कांप उठा। अपने जीवन को बचाने और यमदूत को चकमा देने के लिए उसने अपनी अद्भुत कला का सहारा लेने की योजना बनाई। उसने दिन-रात एक करके अपने जैसी हूबहू दिखने वाली दस मूर्तियाँ तैयार कीं। जब मूर्तियाँ बनकर तैयार हुईं, तो उनमें और जीवित मूर्तिकार में रत्ती भर भी अंतर कर पाना असंभव था।
अगले ही दिन जब यमदूत उसके प्राण लेने पहुँचे, तो मूर्तिकार तुरंत उन मूर्तियों के बीच जाकर सांस रोककर बिल्कुल स्थिर खड़ा हो गया।
यमदूत कक्ष में आए और एक साथ ग्यारह एक जैसे व्यक्तियों को देखकर स्तब्ध रह गए। वे समझ नहीं पा रहे थे कि इनमें से असली जीवित मनुष्य कौन है और पत्थर की निर्जीव मूर्ति कौन सी।
यमदूत ने भली-भांति निरीक्षण किया। रूप, रंग, वेशभूषा, यहाँ तक कि त्वचा की बनावट भी बिल्कुल एक समान थी। यमदूत सृष्टि के नियम के विरुद्ध किसी निर्जीव मूर्ति के प्राण नहीं ले सकते थे और न ही खाली हाथ लौट सकते थे।
कुछ क्षण विचार करने के बाद यमदूत मूर्तिकार के स्वभाव और मानवीय कमज़ोरी को समझ गए। वे धीरे से मुस्कुराए और मूर्तियों को देखते हुए गंभीर स्वर में बोले—
"अद्भुत! निःसंदेह यह इस ब्रह्मांड की सबसे उत्कृष्ट कलाकृति है। बनाने वाले ने साक्षात चमत्कार कर दिखाया है। परंतु... बड़े खेद की बात है कि मूर्तिकार से एक बहुत बड़ी भूल हो गई। एक ऐसी कमी, जिसने इस पूरी मेहनत को व्यर्थ कर दिया।"
यह सुनते ही मूर्तिकार का अहंकार तिलमिला उठा। वह स्वयं को सर्वश्रेष्ठ मानता था, इसलिए अपनी बनाई कृति में कोई भी दोष सुनने का धैर्य उसमें नहीं था। वह तुरंत बोल पड़ा—
"असंभव! मेरी कला में कोई कमी नहीं हो सकती। बताओ, क्या भूल हुई है मुझसे?"
यमदूत ने आगे बढ़कर उसकी बांह थाम ली और शांत भाव से कहा—
"बस यही एक भूल हो गई तुमसे—तुम्हारा अहंकार। यदि तुम चुप रहते, तो शायद मैं तुम्हें कभी पहचान न पाता। लेकिन तुम्हारी अपनी प्रशंसा सुनने की चाहत और आलोचना न सह पाने की कमजोरी ने तुम्हें पकड़वा दिया।"
मूर्तिकार सिर झुकाए खड़ा रह गया। उसका कला का घमंड और जीवित रहने की तृष्णा उसी के अहंकार के हाथों पराजित हो चुकी थी।
सीख: इंसान अपनी योग्यता से कितनी भी बड़ी सफलता क्यों न पा ले, लेकिन जब तक उसके भीतर अहंकार और आत्मप्रशंसा की भूख जीवित है, वही उसकी सबसे बड़ी कमजोरी बनकर उसके पतन का कारण बनती है।

An exceptionally skilled sculptor lived in a certain city. The statues he created were so lifelike that anyone could be deceived at first glance. People heaped praise upon his artistry. Over time, this constant adulation instilled in him a deep arrogance—a belief that he was the most unique being on earth and stood above the very laws of nature.
Upon waking, he trembled with the fear of death. To save his life and outwit the messengers, he devised a plan relying on his extraordinary artistic talent. Working day and night, he crafted ten statues that looked exactly like him. Once completed, it was impossible to distinguish the slightest difference between the statues and the living sculptor.
The very next day, when the messengers arrived to claim his life, the sculptor immediately positioned himself among the statues, holding his breath and standing perfectly still.
The messengers entered the room and were stunned to see eleven identical figures. They could not discern which one was the real, living human and which were the lifeless stone statues.
The messengers examined them closely. Their appearance, complexion, attire, and even the texture of their skin were identical. The messengers could neither take the life of a lifeless statue—violating the laws of creation—nor return empty-handed.
After a moment of reflection, the messengers grasped the sculptor's nature and human frailties. Smiling faintly, they looked at the statues and spoke in a solemn tone—
"Magnificent! Undoubtedly, this is the finest masterpiece in the universe. The creator has performed a veritable miracle. Yet... it is a great pity that the sculptor made one colossal blunder. A flaw that rendered all this hard work futile."
Upon hearing this, the sculptor's ego was stung. He considered himself the best; therefore, he lacked the patience to hear of any flaw in his creation. He immediately retorted—
"Impossible! There cannot be any shortcoming in my art. Tell me, what mistake have I made?"
The messenger of death stepped forward, grasped his arm, and said calmly—
"That is precisely the mistake you made—your arrogance. Had you remained silent, I might never have recognized you. But your desire to hear your own praises and your inability to tolerate criticism led to your capture."
The sculptor stood with his head bowed. His pride in his art and his craving for life had been defeated by his own arrogance.
Moral: No matter how great a success a person achieves through their talent, as long as arrogance and a hunger for self-praise remain within them, these traits become their greatest weakness and the cause of their downfall.
