सुलभा ने तोड़ा राजा दशरथ का अभिमान, फिर मिला श्रीराम के जन्म का आशीर्वाद!

कथावाचकों के प्रसंगों में सुलभा और अयोध्या के राजा दशरथ से जुड़ी एक अत्यंत मार्मिक और शिक्षाप्रद कथा प्रचलित है,
कथा के अनुसार, एक बार राजा दशरथ आखेट (शिकार) के लिए वन में गए। वन में भटकते हुए वे मार्ग भूल गए और थककर प्यास से व्याकुल हो उठे।
राजा दशरथ ने उनकी कुटिया में जाकर जल माँगा।
सुलभा ने उन्हें शीतल जल पिलाया और बड़े प्रेम से कंद-मूल-फल खाने को दिए।
तृप्त होकर राजा दशरथ के मन में अपने चक्रवर्ती सम्राट होने का भाव जागा। उन्होंने सुलभा से कहा:
“हे भद्रे! मैं अयोध्या का राजा दशरथ हूँ। तुमने मेरी तृषा शांत की है। तुम जो चाहो मुझसे माँग लो—धन, स्वर्ण, गाँव या राजमहल; मैं तुम्हारी निर्धनता सदा के लिए मिटा दूँगा।”
सुलभा मंद-मंद मुस्कुराईं और अत्यंत शांत स्वर में बोलीं:
“राजन्! जिसके हृदय में संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड के स्वामी श्रीहरि बसते हैं, वह निर्धन कैसे हो सकता है?”
“संसार की कोई भी वस्तु मुझे तृप्त नहीं कर सकती, क्योंकि मुझे किसी नश्वर वस्तु की चाह ही नहीं है। आप मुझे वह नहीं दे सकते जो मेरे प्रभु मुझे पहले ही दे चुके हैं।”
राजा दशरथ को एक वनवासी वृद्धा के इस निर्लिप्त उत्तर से बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ। सुलभा ने राजा की आँखों में छिपी अंतर्निहित चिंता और संतान-हीनता के दुःख को भांप लिया और कहा:
“महाराज! पद, प्रतिष्ठा और साम्राज्य केवल इस देह तक सीमित हैं। जीवन का सच्चा उद्देश्य केवल राजभोग नहीं, बल्कि ईश्वर-शरण और आत्म-ज्ञान है।”
“आप बाहर से स्वयं को समर्थ मान रहे हैं, किंतु आपके भीतर भी किसी न किसी अभाव की अग्नि सुलग रही है। अपनी शक्ति का अभिमान छोड़कर प्रभु के चरणों में पूर्ण समर्पण कीजिए।”
सुलभा के इन ब्रह्मज्ञान-युक्त वचनों को सुनकर राजा दशरथ का राजसी अभिमान टूट गया। वे समझ गए कि यह कोई साधारण वृद्धा नहीं, बल्कि एक उच्च कोटि की आत्मज्ञानी विदुषी हैं।
राजा दशरथ ने अपने मुकुट को उतारकर सुलभा के चरणों में रख दिया और विनम्रतापूर्वक आशीर्वाद माँगा। तब सुलभा ने उन्हें आशीर्वाद दिया कि उनके घर में स्वयं साक्षात परब्रह्म (श्रीराम) पुत्र रूप में अवतरित होंगे और उनका नाम युगों-युगों तक अमर रहेगा।
कथा की मूल सीख
भौतिक ऐश्वर्य बनाम आत्म-संतोष: संसार का सबसे धनी व्यक्ति भी आत्मज्ञानी और संतुष्ट भक्त के आगे निर्धन ही होता है।
सच्ची पात्रता: ईश्वर की कृपा या संतान सुख केवल राजबल से नहीं, बल्कि अहंकार छोड़कर विनम्र होने पर ही प्राप्त होता है।

Among the tales recounted by storytellers, there is a deeply moving and instructive story involving Sulabha and King Dasharatha of Ayodhya.
According to the story, King Dasharatha once went into the forest to hunt. While wandering, he lost his way and, overcome by fatigue, became tormented by thirst.
In the distance, he spotted a small hermitage where an elderly woman named Sulabha—a devout ascetic, a woman of great wisdom, and a devotee of Lord Vishnu (Krishna)—resided.
King Dasharatha approached her hermitage and asked for water.
Sulabha offered him cool water and, with great affection, served him forest roots, tubers, and fruits.
Once his thirst was quenched, a sense of his own status as a *Chakravarti Samrat* (Universal Emperor) arose in King Dasharatha’s mind. He said to Sulabha:
“O noble lady! I am Dasharatha, the King of Ayodhya. You have quenched my thirst. Ask of me whatever you desire—wealth, gold, villages, or a royal palace; I shall banish your poverty forever.”
Sulabha smiled gently and spoke in a calm, serene voice:
“O King! How can one be poor when Sri Hari—the Lord of the entire universe—resides within one’s heart?”
“No worldly object can truly satisfy me, for I harbor no desire for anything perishable. You cannot give me what my Lord has already bestowed upon me.”
“Maharaj! Rank, prestige, and empire are limited merely to this physical body. The true purpose of life is not merely royal indulgence, but seeking refuge in God and attaining self-knowledge.”
“You perceive yourself as powerful outwardly, yet within you, the fire of some void or unfulfilled longing smolders. Cast aside the pride of your power and surrender yourself completely at the feet of the Lord.” Upon hearing these words of profound spiritual wisdom from Sulabha, King Dasharatha’s royal arrogance was shattered. He realized that she was no ordinary elderly woman, but a highly enlightened and learned sage.
King Dasharatha removed his crown, placed it at Sulabha’s feet, and humbly sought her blessings. Sulabha then blessed him, prophesying that the Supreme Being (Parabrahman)—in the form of Shri Rama—would incarnate as his son, and that his name would remain immortal throughout the ages.
