एक बड़े शहर के व्यस्त बाजार में सुबह से ही चहल-पहल थी। दुकानों पर ग्राहकों की भीड़ लगी हुई थी। उसी समय एक चमचमाती लग्ज़री कार आकर सब्ज़ी मंडी के सामने रुकी। कार के अंदर बैठी एक अमीर महिला मोबाइल पर किसी से बात कर रही थी। उसने अपनी लगभग दस साल की बेटी से कहा, "जाओ, उस बूढ़ी औरत से पूछो कि सब्ज़ी कितने की है।"
बेटी कार से उतरी और बिना किसी सम्मान के बोली, "अरे बुढ़िया! ये सब्ज़ी कितने की दी?"
सब्ज़ी बेचने वाली वृद्धा ने मुस्कुराते हुए उत्तर दिया, "बेटी जी, चालीस रुपये किलो है।"
लड़की ने सब्ज़ी ली और सौ रुपये का नोट उसकी ओर फेंक दिया। फिर बिना बाकी पैसे लिए कार में बैठ गई। कार आगे बढ़ने ही वाली थी कि तभी लगभग बारह साल की एक लड़की दौड़ती हुई आई और कार का शीशा खटखटाने लगी।
महिला ने शीशा नीचे किया तो लड़की ने दोनों हाथों से साठ रुपये आगे बढ़ाते हुए कहा, "आंटी जी, ये आपके बचे हुए पैसे हैं। आपकी बेटी भूल गई थी।"
महिला ने मुस्कुराकर कहा, "बेटा, तुम ही रख लो।"
लड़की ने विनम्रता से सिर झुकाकर कहा, "नहीं आंटी जी। जितने हमारे बनते थे, हमने ले लिए। मेहनत की कमाई से ज़्यादा लेना हमें माँ ने कभी नहीं सिखाया। हमें खुशी होगी अगर आपको हमारी सब्ज़ियाँ पसंद आएँ और आप फिर से हमारी दुकान पर आएँ।"
इतना कहकर उसने हाथ जोड़कर नमस्ते की और वापस अपनी दुकान की ओर चली गई।
महिला उस बच्ची की ईमानदारी और शालीनता देखकर हैरान रह गई। उसके मन में उत्सुकता हुई कि आखिर इतनी छोटी बच्ची में इतने अच्छे संस्कार कैसे आए?
वह कार से उतरकर चुपचाप सब्ज़ी की दुकान के पास पहुँची। वहाँ उसने देखा कि वही वृद्धा अपनी बेटी से प्यार से पूछ रही थी, "बेटी, तुमने ग्राहक से आदर से बात की ना? किसी को बुरा तो नहीं लगा?"
लड़की मुस्कुराकर बोली, "हाँ माँ। आपने सिखाया है कि हर इंसान सम्मान के योग्य होता है। चाहे वह अमीर हो या गरीब, छोटा हो या बड़ा, सबसे मीठी वाणी में बात करनी चाहिए।"
माँ ने उसके सिर पर हाथ फेरते हुए कहा, "बेटी, धन-दौलत कभी भी कम या ज़्यादा हो सकती है, लेकिन अच्छे संस्कार ही इंसान की सबसे बड़ी पहचान होते हैं।"
लड़की बोली, "माँ, अब मैं स्कूल जा रही हूँ। छुट्टी होते ही वापस दुकान पर आ जाऊँगी।"
यह सब सुनकर कार वाली महिला की आँखें झुक गईं। उसे अपनी गलती का एहसास हो चुका था। उसने महसूस किया कि उसने अपनी बेटी को अच्छे संस्कार देने के बजाय लोगों में ऊँच-नीच का भेद सिखाया था, जबकि एक साधारण सब्ज़ी बेचने वाली अपनी बेटी को इंसानियत, ईमानदारी और सम्मान का सबसे बड़ा पाठ पढ़ा रही थी।
घर लौटते समय उसने अपनी बेटी से कहा, "बेटा, आज मुझे समझ आया कि असली अमीरी पैसे में नहीं, बल्कि संस्कारों में होती है। आज से हम हर व्यक्ति से सम्मानपूर्वक बात करेंगे, क्योंकि इंसान की पहचान उसके कपड़ों या पैसे से नहीं, बल्कि उसके व्यवहार से होती है।"
उस दिन के बाद माँ और बेटी दोनों बदल गए। अब वे हर छोटे-बड़े व्यक्ति का सम्मान करते, मधुर वाणी बोलते और हर किसी के साथ समान व्यवहार करते थे। धीरे-धीरे उनकी यही आदत उनकी सबसे बड़ी पहचान बन गई।

A busy market in a large city was bustling with activity from early morning. Crowds of customers thronged the shops. Just then, a gleaming luxury car pulled up in front of the vegetable market. A wealthy woman inside the car was talking on her mobile phone. She said to her daughter, who was about ten years old, "Go and ask that old woman how much the vegetables cost."
The daughter stepped out of the car and spoke without a shred of respect, "Hey old woman! How much for these vegetables?"
The elderly vegetable seller smiled and replied, "Dear, they are forty rupees a kilo."
The girl took the vegetables and tossed a hundred-rupee note toward her. Then, without waiting for the change, she got back into the car. Just as the car was about to move, a girl of about twelve came running and knocked on the car window.
When the woman rolled down the window, the girl held out sixty rupees with both hands and said, "Aunty, here is your change. Your daughter forgot it."
The woman smiled and said, "Child, you keep it."
The girl bowed her head politely and said, "No, Aunty. We took exactly what was due to us. My mother never taught us to take more than what we earned through honest hard work. We would be happy if you liked our vegetables and visited our shop again."
Saying this, she folded her hands in a respectful *Namaste* and walked back to her shop.
She stepped out of the car and quietly approached the vegetable stall. There, she saw the elderly woman asking her daughter affectionately, "Dear, you spoke respectfully to the customer, didn't you? No one felt hurt, did they?" The girl smiled and said, "Yes, Mother. You taught me that every person deserves respect. Whether rich or poor, of high status or low, one should always speak with the utmost kindness."
Caressing her daughter's head, the mother said, "Daughter, wealth may fluctuate, but good values are what truly define a person."
The girl said, "Mother, I am off to school now. I will return to the shop as soon as classes are over."
Hearing this, the woman in the car lowered her eyes; she realized her mistake. She understood that instead of instilling good values in her own daughter, she had taught her to discriminate based on status. Meanwhile, a humble vegetable seller was teaching her daughter the greatest lessons of humanity, honesty, and respect.
On the way home, she said to her daughter, "My child, today I realized that true wealth lies not in money, but in one's values. From this day forward, we will treat everyone with respect, for a person is defined not by their clothes or money, but by their behavior."
From that day on, both mother and daughter changed. They began to respect everyone—regardless of status—spoke kindly, and treated all people equally. Gradually, this habit became their defining characteristic.
Moral:
Teach children not to value high status, grand homes, or vast wealth, but rather humility, honesty, kind speech, and respect for others. For good values are the true wealth that stays with us for a lifetime and makes a person truly great.
