This image depicts a renowned mythological tale from the era of the Mahabharata, in which Lord Surya (the Sun God) is presenting the "Akshaya Patra" to Yudhishthira—the eldest of the Pandava brothers and known as Dharmaraja. According to the *Vana Parva* (Book of the Forest) of the Mahabharata, when the Pandavas—having lost everything in a game of dice—were setting out for a twelve-year exile followed by a year of incognito living, a large number of Brahmins, sages, and common citizens accompanied them into the forest.
Yudhishthira was a righteous king; he did not wish to leave his guests and the sages hungry. However, arranging food for thousands of people daily in the desolate wilderness was a formidable challenge.
**Worship of Lord Surya and the Boon:** To resolve this grave crisis, the Pandavas' family priest, Maharshi Dhaumya, advised Yudhishthira to worship Lord Surya. Following the sage's counsel, Yudhishthira performed intense penance while standing in the holy river Ganges, chanting the 108 names of Lord Surya with single-minded devotion. Pleased by Yudhishthira's sincere devotion and penance, Lord Surya appeared before him. He bestowed upon Yudhishthira a divine copper vessel known as the "Akshaya Patra" (*Akshaya* signifies something that is inexhaustible or never-ending).
**The Unique Quality of the Akshaya Patra:** Lord Surya granted Yudhishthira the boon that, throughout their exile, this vessel would provide an unlimited supply of food. The unique attribute of this divine vessel was that, no matter how many people partook of the meal, the food within it would never run out.
However, there was one crucial condition:
The vessel would continue to yield food only until Draupadi had finished her own meal; once Draupadi had eaten, the vessel would cease to provide food for the remainder of the day.
With the aid of this divine Akshaya Patra, the Pandavas navigated the arduous years of their exile with great ease, ensuring that every sage and ascetic visiting their hermitage was fed to their fill with the utmost respect and hospitality.
