रामू काका अपनी ईमानदारी और नेक स्वाभाव के लिए पूरे गाँव में प्रसिद्द थे। एक बार उन्होंने अपने कुछ मित्रों को खाने पर आमंत्रित किया। वे अक्सर इस तरह इकठ्ठा हुआ करते और साथ मिलकर अपनी पसंद का भोजन बनाते।
आज भी सभी मित्र बड़े उत्साह से एक दुसरे से मिले और बातों का दौर चलने लगा।
जब बात खाने को लेकर शुरू हुई तभी काका को एहसास हुआ कि नमक तो सुबह ही ख़त्म हो गया था।
काका नमक लाने के लिए उठे फिर कुछ सोच कर अपने बेटे को बुलाया और हाथ में कुछ पैसे रखते हुए बोले, “ बेटा, जा जरा बाज़ार से एक पुड़िया नमक लेता आ..”
“जी पिताजी।”, बेटा बोला और आगे बढ़ने लगा।
“सुन”, काका बोले, “ ये ध्यान रखना कि नमक सही दाम पे खरीदना, ना अधिक पैसे देना और ना कम।”
बेटे को आश्चर्य हुआ, उसने पूछा, “पिताजी, अधिक दाम में ना लाना तो समझ में आता है, लेकिन अगर कुह मोल भाव करके मैं कम पैसे में नामक लाता हूँ और चार पैसे बचाता हूँ तो इसमें हर्ज़ ही क्या है?”
“नहीं बेटा,” काका बोले, “ ऐसा करना हमारे गाँव को बर्वाद कर सकता है! जा उचित दाम पे नामक लेकर आ।”
काका के मित्र भी ये सारी बात सुन रहे थे, किसी ने बोला, “ भाई, तेरी ये बात समझ ना आई, कम दाम पे नमक लेने से अपना गाँव कैसे बर्वाद हो जाएगा?”,
काका बोले, “ सोचो कोई नमक कम दाम पे क्यों बेचेगा, तभी न जब उसे पैसों की सख्त ज़रूरत हो। और जो कोई भी उसकी इस स्थिति का फायदा उठाता है वो उस मजदूर का अपमान करता है जिसने पसीना बहा कर..कड़ी मेहनत से नमक बनाया होगा”
“लेकिन इतनी सी बात से अपना गाँव कैसे बर्वाद हो जाएगा?”, मित्रों ने हँसते हुए कहा।
शुरू में समाज के अन्दर कोई बेईमानी नहीं थी, लेकिन धीरे-धीरे हम लोग इसमें एक-एक चुटकी बेईमानी डालते गए और सोचा कि इतने से क्या होगा, पर खुद ही देख लो हम कहाँ पहुँच गए हैं… आज हम एक चुटकी ईमानदारी के लिए तरस रहे हैं!”हमें छोटे-छोटे मसलों में भी
पूरी तरह ईमानदार होने की सीख देती है और हमें दूसरों के प्रति संवेदनशील होना सिखाती है।
अपने दिन प्रतिदिन के जीवन में हम बहुत बार ऐसा व्यवहार करते हैं जो हम भी अन्दर से जानते हैं कि वो गलत है। पर फिर हम ये सोच कर कि “इससे क्या होगा!”, अपने आप को समझा लेते हैं और गलत काम कर बैठते हैं और इस तरह समाज में अपने हिस्से की बेईमानी डाल देते हैं। चलिए, हम सब प्रयास करें कि ईमानदारी की बड़ी-बड़ी मिसाल कायम करने से पहले अपनी रोज-मर्रा की ज़िन्दगी में ईमानदारी घोलें और एक चुटकी बेईमानी को एक चुटकी ईमानदारी से ख़त्म करें!

Ramu Kaka was renowned throughout the village for his honesty and noble nature. Once, he invited some friends over for a meal; they often gathered like this to cook and enjoy their favorite dishes together.
On this day too, the friends met with great enthusiasm, and the conversation flowed freely.
However, when the talk turned to the meal, Kaka realized that the salt had run out that very morning.
Kaka stood up to fetch some salt but then, after a moment's thought, called his son over. Placing some money in the boy's hand, he said, "Son, go to the market and bring back a packet of salt."
"Yes, Father," the son replied and started to leave.
"Listen," Kaka added, "make sure you buy the salt at the fair price—neither pay too much nor too little."
"No, son," Kaka said, "doing that could ruin our village! Go and buy the salt at the proper price."
Kaka's friends had been listening to this exchange. One of them asked, "Brother, I don't quite understand—how would buying salt at a lower price ruin our village?"
Kaka replied, "Think about it: why would someone sell salt at a low price? Only if they were in dire need of money. And anyone who takes advantage of that situation insults the laborer who sweated and toiled hard to produce that salt."
"But how could such a small thing ruin our village?" the friends asked with a laugh.
"Initially, there was no dishonesty in society; but gradually, we kept adding a pinch of dishonesty here and there, thinking, 'What harm could a little bit do?' Yet, look at where we have ended up today... now, we are yearning for even a pinch of honesty!" It teaches us to be completely honest even in small matters and to be sensitive towards others.
In our daily lives, we often engage in behavior that we know, deep down, is wrong. Yet, telling ourselves "What difference will it make?", we rationalize our actions and commit the wrong deed, thereby contributing our own share of dishonesty to society. Let us all strive to infuse honesty into our everyday lives—before attempting to set grand examples of it—and replace that pinch of dishonesty with a pinch of honesty!
