The Remarkable Story of Hanuman and the Sun God (Surya Dev):

Child Hanuman mistaking the Sun for a fruit, receiving instruction from the Sun God, and offering *Guru-Dakshina* (teacher's fee):

Among the childhood tales of Hanuman, the story involving the Sun God is truly beautiful and inspiring. It offers a glimpse into child Hanuman's extraordinary power and curiosity, the radiance of the Sun God, the teacher-disciple relationship, and the virtue of humility.

The Birth of Child Hanuman:

Hanuman is considered the son of the Vanara King Kesari and Mother Anjana. He was born through the special grace of Pawan Dev (the Wind God); hence, he is known as Pawanputra, Marutinandan, and Vayuputra.

Even in his early childhood, he displayed extraordinary radiance and strength.

He was also extremely playful.

Sometimes, he would visit hermitages and scatter the sages' belongings; at other times, he would swing from tree branches or attempt to fly in the sky.

Yet, beneath his playful nature lay extraordinary capability.

Mistaking the Sun for a Fruit:

One morning, child Hanuman looked up at the sky.

The Sun God appeared brilliant red and radiant in the eastern sky.

To child Hanuman, it looked like a large red fruit.

He thought—

"What a beautiful fruit! I shall eat it."

And with that, child Hanuman leapt towards the sky.

His leap was no ordinary one.

He began moving towards the Sun at tremendous speed.

Child Hanuman in the Sky:

The vast distance of the sky posed no obstacle for child Hanuman.

He soared onwards, passing through the clouds.

The gods were astonished to see a small child racing towards the Sun at such incredible speed.

The Sun God was seated upon his divine chariot.

Aruna was driving the chariot, and the Sun God was proceeding along his destined path.

Just then, child Hanuman reached very close to the Sun.

It Was Also the Day of a Solar Eclipse:

In Puranic tradition, this event is also linked to a solar eclipse.

Rahu had arrived to eclipse the Sun. But there, he saw another child moving towards the Sun.

Rahu became alarmed.

He approached Indra and stated that while he held the right to eclipse the Sun, another being was attempting to seize it.

Indra's Arrival:

Indra, the King of Gods, arrived there riding his elephant, Airavat.

Child Hanuman mistook Airavat for a massive creature.

He thought it was something meant for play or consumption.

He began moving towards Airavat as well.

Indra felt that the child could pose a threat to both the Sun and his own mount.

So, Indra raised his *Vajra* (thunderbolt).

The Strike of the *Vajra*:

Indra struck child Hanuman with the *Vajra*.

The *Vajra* hit Hanuman's chin.

He fell down from the sky.

It was due to this incident that he became known as "Hanuman."

"Hanu" is associated with the chin.

That is why one of his famous epithets is—

Hanuman—he whose chin was struck by the *Vajra*.

The Wrath of Pavandev (Wind God):

When Pavandev saw his son in an injured state, he became deeply distressed and enraged.

He halted the flow of the wind.

Without air, the lives of all living beings in the world were imperiled.

The gods became worried.

Humans, animals, birds, and all creatures began to suffer in distress.

The gods then realized the far-reaching consequences of the incident involving child Hanuman.

The Gods Bestow Boons upon Hanuman:

The gods approached child Hanuman to appease Pavandev.

They bestowed numerous boons upon Hanuman.

Different traditions offer varying accounts of these boons.

His strength, intellect, courage, and divine capabilities were especially praised.

Consequently, in time, Hanuman became—

An extraordinary embodiment of strength, intellect, wisdom, and devotion.

Surya-dev (Sun God) Becomes Hanuman's Guru:

As Hanuman grew older, a deep desire to acquire knowledge awakened within him. He received instruction from numerous scholars and deities.

However, he resolved to make the Sun God (Surya Dev) his teacher.

He approached the Sun God and humbly said—

"O Sun God! Please impart knowledge to me."

The Sun God replied that he was constantly in motion on his chariot; he had no time to stop and impart instruction.

But Hanuman offered a solution.

He said—

"Gurudev, please continue along your path. I shall receive instruction while remaining right in front of you."

Instruction from the Sun God:

Observing Hanuman's aptitude and dedication, the Sun God agreed to teach him.

According to tradition, Hanuman learned the Vedas, Vedangas, grammar, scriptures, and various other disciplines from the Sun God.

The most remarkable aspect was that the Sun God kept moving forward on his chariot while Hanuman received instruction by staying right in front of him.

This episode is considered a testament to Hanuman's extraordinary speed and concentration.

Hanuman's Knowledge:

Hanuman was not merely strong.

He was also deeply learned.

In the Valmiki Ramayana, when Hanuman meets Shri Ram for the first time, Shri Ram highly praises his speech, language, and command of grammar.

In the Ramayana, Shri Ram says:

*Nunam vyakaranam kritsnam anena bahudha shrutam.*

This means: Hanuman has undoubtedly studied the entire grammar deeply.

Shri Ram was impressed by his choice of words, pronunciation, language, and the dignity of his speech.

This demonstrates that Hanuman was not merely a symbol of physical strength.

He was also a symbol of wisdom and intellect.

The Sun God Asked for *Guru-Dakshina*:

After his education was complete, Hanuman said to the Sun God—

"Gurudev, I wish to offer you *Guru-Dakshina* (teacher's fee). Please command me."

The Sun God replied that he required no *Guru-Dakshina*.

However, Hanuman persisted in his request.

Then, the Sun God said that if he truly wished to offer *Guru-Dakshina*, he should help his son, Sugriva...
