एक नगर में एक अत्यंत गरीब व्यक्ति रहता था। वह प्रतिदिन प्रातःकाल अपने गुरु के आश्रम जाता, पूरे मन से आश्रम की साफ़-सफ़ाई करता और फिर अपनी छोटी-सी दुकान लगाने के लिए निकल जाता। उसकी आर्थिक स्थिति बहुत कमजोर थी। वह अक्सर गुरुजी से प्रार्थना करता, "गुरुदेव! मुझे ऐसा आशीर्वाद दीजिए कि मेरे जीवन में धन-धान्य की कभी कमी न रहे।"
एक दिन गुरुजी ने मुस्कुराते हुए पूछा, "वत्स! क्या तुम आश्रम की सेवा केवल धन प्राप्त करने की इच्छा से करते हो?"
उस व्यक्ति ने बिना किसी झिझक के उत्तर दिया, "हाँ गुरुदेव, मैं सच कहता हूँ। मैं चाहता हूँ कि मेरे भी अच्छे दिन आएँ। मैं पटरी पर सामान बेचकर जैसे-तैसे परिवार का पालन-पोषण करता हूँ। इसी आशा से आपकी सेवा करता हूँ कि एक दिन मेरा भाग्य बदल जाएगा।"
गुरुजी ने शांत स्वर में कहा, "चिंता मत करो। जब ईश्वर अवसर देंगे, तब वे अलग से तुम्हें बुलाएँगे नहीं। वे चुपचाप तुम्हारे सामने सफलता के द्वार खोल देंगे। उस अवसर को पहचानकर आगे बढ़ जाना।"
समय बीतता गया। कुछ वर्षों में उस व्यक्ति का व्यापार खूब बढ़ गया। वह एक सफल और धनी व्यापारी बन गया। आलीशान घर, प्रतिष्ठा, धन-संपत्ति—सब कुछ उसके पास था। व्यापार की व्यस्तता इतनी बढ़ी कि आश्रम जाना और गुरुजी की सेवा करना भी छूट गया।
कई वर्षों बाद एक दिन वह प्रातःकाल फिर आश्रम पहुँचा। पहले की तरह झाड़ू उठाई और पूरे मन से सफ़ाई करने लगा। गुरुजी ने उसे देखकर आश्चर्य से पूछा, "वत्स! इतने वर्षों बाद आज कैसे आना हुआ? सुना है तुम बहुत बड़े सेठ बन गए हो।"
उसकी आँखें नम हो गईं। वह बोला, "गुरुदेव! ईश्वर की कृपा से मुझे अपार धन मिला। बच्चों के विवाह अच्छे घरों में हुए। किसी वस्तु की कमी नहीं रही, लेकिन मन का चैन कहीं खो गया। हर दिन लगता था कि आश्रम आकर आपकी सेवा करूँ, पर समय और मोह ने मुझे बाँध लिया। आपने मुझे सब कुछ दिया, पर मन की शांति नहीं मिली।"गुरुजी मुस्कुराए और बोले, "मैंने तुम्हें वही दिया, जो तुमने माँगा था। तुमने कभी मन की शांति माँगी ही नहीं।"
यह सुनते ही वह व्यक्ति गुरुजी के चरणों में गिर पड़ा। आँसुओं से भरी आँखों से बोला, "गुरुदेव! अब मुझे धन, वैभव या कोई और इच्छा नहीं चाहिए। मुझे केवल आपकी सेवा करने दीजिए। मैं अब किसी फल की अपेक्षा से सेवा नहीं करूँगा, केवल आत्मिक शांति के लिए आऊँगा।"
गुरुजी ने स्नेहपूर्वक कहा, "याद रखना, जो सेवा किसी स्वार्थ से की जाती है, उसका फल सीमित होता है। लेकिन जो सेवा निस्वार्थ भाव से की जाती है, वही मन को सच्ची शांति और ईश्वर की कृपा प्रदान करती है।"
उस दिन से वह व्यक्ति प्रतिदिन आश्रम आने लगा। अब उसके हाथ सेवा करते थे और मन ईश्वर का स्मरण करता था। धीरे-धीरे उसके हृदय में वह शांति उतर आई, जिसे संसार का कोई धन नहीं खरीद सकता।
शिक्षा:
धन-संपत्ति जीवन को सुविधाएँ दे सकती है, पर मन की शांति केवल निस्वार्थ सेवा, संतोष और ईश्वर की भक्ति से ही प्राप्त होती है।

A very poor man lived in a town. Every morning, he would go to his Guru's ashram, clean the premises with wholehearted devotion, and then set out to run his small roadside stall. His financial condition was dire. He would often pray to his Guru, "Gurudev! Please bless me so that I never face a shortage of wealth and prosperity in my life."
hesitation, "Yes, Gurudev, I speak the truth. I want better days to come my way. I somehow manage to support my family by selling goods on the roadside. I serve you in the hope that, one day, my fortune will change."
The Guru said in a calm voice, "Do not worry. When God grants an opportunity, He will not summon you explicitly; He will quietly open the doors of success before you. Simply recognize that opportunity and move forward."
Time passed. Over the next few years, the man's business flourished. He became a successful and wealthy merchant. He possessed a luxurious home, prestige, and immense wealth—he had it all. However, the demands of his business grew so great that he stopped visiting the ashram and serving the Guru.
Many years later, he arrived at the ashram one morning. Just as he used to do in the past, he picked up a broom and began cleaning with wholehearted devotion. Seeing him, the Guru asked in surprise, "My child! What brings you here after all these years? I hear you have become a very wealthy merchant."
His eyes welled up with tears. He said, "Gurudev! By God's grace, I acquired immense wealth. My children were married into good families. I lacked nothing, yet I lost my peace of mind. Every day, I felt an urge to come to the ashram and serve you, but the demands of time and worldly attachments held me back. You gave me everything, yet I could not find peace of mind." Guruji smiled and said, "I gave you exactly what you asked for. You never asked for peace of mind."
Hearing this, the man fell at Guruji's feet. With tear-filled eyes, he said, "Gurudev! I no longer desire wealth, luxury, or anything else. Please, just let me serve you. From now on, I will not serve with the expectation of any reward; I will come solely for spiritual peace."
Guruji said affectionately, "Remember, service performed out of self-interest yields limited results. However, service rendered selflessly brings true peace to the mind and bestows God's grace."
From that day on, the man began visiting the ashram daily. Now, while his hands engaged in service, his mind remained focused on remembering God. Gradually, a peace settled in his heart—a peace that no worldly wealth could buy.
