प्राचीन काल की बात है, एक समृद्ध राज्य के राजमहल के मुख्य द्वार पर एक वृद्ध साधु पधारे। उनकी वेशभूषा फटी-पुरानी थी, लेकिन उनके मुख पर एक गजब का तेज था। उन्होंने द्वारपाल से बड़े आत्मविश्वास के साथ कहा, "भीतर जाओ और महाराज से कहो कि उनका बड़ा भाई उनसे मिलने आया है।"
द्वारपाल असमंजस में पड़ गया। उसने सोचा कि शायद महाराज के कोई आत्मीय संबंधी रहे होंगे, जिन्होंने संसार त्याग कर संन्यास ले लिया हो। उसने तुरंत भीतर जाकर सूचना दी। राजा चतुर और उदार थे। सूचना सुनते ही उनके चेहरे पर एक रहस्यमयी मुस्कान आई। उन्होंने ससम्मान साधु को भीतर बुलाकर अपने बगल वाले सिंहासन पर बैठाया।
साधु ने बड़े स्नेह से राजा के सिर पर हाथ रखा और पूछा— "कहो अनुज (छोटे भाई), तुम्हारा राज-काज कैसा चल रहा है? तुम सुखी तो हो?"
राजा ने हाथ जोड़कर उत्तर दिया— "मैं कुशल हूँ भैया, आप अपनी सुनाइए।"
साधु ने लंबी सांस भरते हुए कहा— "क्या कहूँ अनुज! जिस महल में मैं वर्षों से रह रहा था, वह अब अत्यंत पुराना और जर्जर हो गया है। उसकी दीवारें हिल रही हैं और वह कभी भी गिर सकता है। मेरे पास बत्तीस नौकर थे, जो दिन-रात मेरी सेवा में रहते थे, वे भी एक-एक कर साथ छोड़ गए। मेरी पाँच रानियाँ थीं, वे भी अब वृद्ध और अशक्त हो गई हैं, अब उनसे कोई काम नहीं संभलता।"
यह सुनकर राजा ने मंत्रियों की ओर देखा और साधु को 10 स्वर्ण मुद्राएं देने का आदेश दिया
साधु ने उन मुद्राओं को देखा और मुस्कुराते हुए कहा— "राजन्, ये तो बहुत कम हैं। इतने में तो उस महल की मरम्मत भी नहीं होगी।"
राजा ने विनम्रता से कहा— "क्षमा करें भ्राता, इस वर्ष राज्य में वर्षा कम हुई है और अकाल की स्थिति है, इसलिए अभी आप इतने से ही संतोष करें।"
साधु ने तपाक से उत्तर दिया— "यदि ऐसी बात है, तो मेरे साथ सात समंदर पार चलिए। वहाँ सोने की अगाध खदानें हैं। मेरे सामर्थ्य का अंदाजा आपको है ही, मेरे पैर रखते ही समुद्र सूख जाएगा और स्वर्ण निकालना सुगम हो जाएगा। आखिर मेरे पैरों की शक्ति तो आपने अभी देख ही ली है।"
साधु की यह बात सुनते ही राजा खिलखिलाकर हँस पड़े और उन्होंने तुरंत 100 स्वर्ण मुद्राएं साधु की झोली में डाल दीं। साधु प्रसन्न होकर आशीर्वाद देते हुए वहां से चले गए।
साधु के जाते ही दरबार में कानाफूसी शुरू हो गई। मंत्रियों और सेनापति ने जिज्ञासावश पूछा— "हे महाराज! हम जानते हैं कि आपका कोई बड़ा भाई नहीं है। फिर आपने उस निर्धन साधु को न केवल भाई माना, बल्कि उसकी ऊटपटांग बातों पर उसे स्वर्ण मुद्राओं से लाद दिया? यह क्या कौतुक है?"
राजा ने मुस्कुराते हुए बड़े ही शांत भाव से समझाया:
"मित्रों, वह कोई साधारण याचक नहीं, बल्कि एक उच्च कोटि का विद्वान था। उसने जीवन का सत्य दर्शन कराया था:"
1. भाई का नाता: भाग्य के दो ही रूप होते हैं— राजा और रंक। हम दोनों ही विधाता की संतान हैं, इस नाते उसने मुझे भाई कहा।
2. जर्जर महल: उसका आशय उसके वृद्ध शरीर से था।
3. 32 नौकर: ये उसके दांत थे, जो अब टूट चुके हैं।
4. 5 रानियाँ: ये मनुष्य की पाँच ज्ञानेंद्रियाँ (आँख, नाक, कान, जीभ, त्वचा) हैं, जो बुढ़ापे के कारण अब शिथिल हो चुकी हैं।
5. समुद्र का सूखना: जब मैंने उसे केवल 10 सिक्के दिए, तो उसने कटाक्ष किया कि मेरे जैसे वैभवशाली राजा के पास उसके कदम पड़ते ही 'दान का समुद्र' सूख गया। उसने मुझे मेरी सामर्थ्य और उदारता की याद दिलाई।
राजा ने आगे कहा— "उसकी वाकपटुता और बुद्धिमानी ने मेरा हृदय जीत लिया। वह मुझे यह सिखा गया कि धन केवल संचय के लिए नहीं, बल्कि पात्र को सम्मान देने के लिए होता है। इसीलिए कल से मैं उसे राज-दरबार का मुख्य सलाहकार नियुक्त करूँगा।"
सीख: बुद्धिमत्ता शब्दों के जाल में नहीं, बल्कि उनके पीछे छिपे अर्थों को समझने में होती है।

Long ago, an elderly ascetic arrived at the main gate of the royal palace of a prosperous kingdom. Though his attire was tattered and worn, his face radiated a remarkable aura. With great confidence, he said to the gatekeeper, "Go inside and tell the King that his elder brother has come to see him."
The gatekeeper was perplexed. He wondered if the King had a close relative who had renounced the world to become an ascetic. He immediately went inside to convey the message. The King was both shrewd and generous; upon hearing the news, a mysterious smile played upon his lips. He respectfully invited the ascetic inside and seated him on the throne right next to his own.
The ascetic placed his hand affectionately on the King's head and asked, "Tell me, younger brother, how is the administration of your kingdom faring? Are you happy?"
With folded hands, the King replied, "I am well, brother; please tell me about yourself."
Sighing deeply, the ascetic said, "What can I say, younger brother! The palace where I have lived for years has now become extremely old and dilapidated. Its walls are unsteady, and it could collapse at any moment. I used to have thirty-two servants who attended to me day and night, but they have all left me, one by one. I had five queens, but they too have grown old and frail; they are no longer capable of handling any tasks."
Hearing this, the King glanced at his ministers and ordered that ten gold coins be given to the ascetic.
The ascetic looked at the coins and said with a smile, "O King, this is very little. This amount wouldn't even cover the repairs for that palace."
The King replied humbly, "Forgive me, brother; rainfall has been scarce in the kingdom this year, and we are facing a drought-like situation. Therefore, please be content with this much for now." The ascetic promptly replied, "If that is the case, come with me across the seven seas. There lie vast mines of gold. You are well aware of my powers; the moment I set foot there, the ocean will dry up, making it easy to extract the gold. After all, you have just witnessed the power of my feet."
Hearing this, the king burst into laughter and immediately dropped a hundred gold coins into the ascetic's satchel. Delighted, the ascetic offered his blessings and departed.
As soon as the ascetic left, whispers rippled through the court. Driven by curiosity, the ministers and the commander-in-chief asked, "O King! We know you have no elder brother. Yet, you not only acknowledged that destitute ascetic as a brother but also showered him with gold coins for his absurd claims. What is the meaning of this spectacle?"
Smiling, the king calmly explained:
"Friends, he was no ordinary beggar, but a scholar of the highest order. He revealed profound truths about life:"
1. **The bond of brotherhood:** Fate manifests in only two forms—king and pauper. Since we are both children of the Creator, he addressed me as a brother.
2. **The dilapidated palace:** He was referring to his own aging body.
3. **32 servants:** These were his teeth, which have now fallen out.
4. **5 queens:** These represent the five human senses (eyes, nose, ears, tongue, and skin), which have become sluggish due to old age.
5. **The drying ocean:** When I gave him only ten coins, he remarked sarcastically that the 'ocean of charity' belonging to a wealthy king like me had dried up the moment he arrived. He was reminding me of my true capacity and the virtue of generosity. The king continued, "His eloquence and wisdom won my heart. He taught me that wealth is not merely for accumulation but for honoring the deserving. Therefore, starting tomorrow, I shall appoint him as the chief advisor to the royal court."
Moral: Wisdom lies not in the web of words, but in understanding the meanings hidden behind them.
