सूर्यवंश में 'सत्यव्रत' नाम के एक अत्यंत प्रतापी और पराक्रमी राजा हुए। वे अपनी प्रजा का पालन-पोषण धर्मपूर्वक करते थे, परंतु उनके भीतर अपने सौंदर्य, बल और सत्ता का एक सूक्ष्म अहंकार पनप रहा था एक दिन राजसभा में बैठे-बैठे उनके मन में एक अनूठा और अभिमानी विचार आया:
संसार में जितने भी पुण्य आत्मा हैं, वे मृत्यु के बाद अपना यह शरीर छोड़कर केवल आत्मा रूप में स्वर्ग जाते हैं। परंतु मैं इतना महान और शक्तिशाली राजा हूँ कि मुझे अपने इस पंचभौतिक मानव देह (सशरीर) के साथ ही स्वर्ग जाना चाहिए, ताकि देवता भी मेरे इस हाड़-मांस के शरीर का आदर करें!
सत्यव्रत अपने कुलगुरु महर्षि वशिष्ठ के आश्रम पहुँचे और प्रणाम करके बोले:हे ब्रह्मर्षि! आप अपनी तपस्या के बल से एक ऐसा यज्ञ कराइए, जिसके प्रभाव से मैं अपने इसी जीवित शरीर के साथ स्वर्गलोक चला जाऊँ।
महर्षि वशिष्ठ ने अपनी दिव्य दृष्टि से देखा और राजा से शांत स्वर में कहा:
हे राजन्! यह विचार धर्म, प्रकृति और विधि के विधान के विरुद्ध है। यह नश्वर शरीर पृथ्वी के पंचतत्त्वों (पृथ्वी, जल, अग्नि, वायु, आकाश) से बना है। इसे स्वर्ग में ले जाना असंभव और अधर्म है। अपनी इस व्यर्थ हठ को त्याग दो और निष्काम भाव से प्रजा-पालन करो।
परंतु राजा सत्यव्रत पर हठ का भूत सवार था। उन्होंने वशिष्ठ जी की बात मानने के बजाय कहा कि यदि आप यह यज्ञ नहीं कराएंगे, तो मैं किसी अन्य ऋषि के पास चला जाऊँगा वशिष्ठ जी के इंकार करने पर राजा सत्यव्रत उनके १०० पुत्रों के पास गए। वशिष्ठ-पुत्रों ने जब देखा कि राजा उनके गुरु और पिता के निर्णय की अवहेलना कर रहा है, तो वे अत्यंत क्रोधित हुए और उन्होंने राजा को शाप दे दिया:
"रे अभिमानी नृप! गुरु की आज्ञा का अनादर करने के कारण तू अत्यंत नीच और कुरूप 'चांडाल' बन जा!
शाप मिलते ही राजा सत्यव्रत का दिव्य रूप, राजसी वस्त्र और आभूषण नष्ट हो गए। उनका शरीर काला, बाल बिखरे हुए, और वस्त्र जीर्ण-शीर्ण हो गए। वे एक भयानक व कुरूप चांडाल के रूप में बदल गए। इस रूप में अयोध्या की प्रजा ने भी उन्हें पहचानने से इंकार कर दिया।
दुखी और अपमानित होकर सत्यव्रत वन-वन भटकने लगे। अंत में वे महर्षि विश्वामित्र के आश्रम पहुँचे। विश्वामित्र जी उस समय महर्षि वशिष्ठ से अपनी श्रेष्ठता सिद्ध करने के लिए प्रयासरत थे।
चांडाल रूपी राजा सत्यव्रत ने विश्वामित्र के चरणों में गिरकर रोते हुए अपनी व्यथा सुनाई।
विश्वामित्र जी ने सोचा कि यदि वे वशिष्ठ के मना किए गए कार्य को अपनी तपस्या से पूरा कर दें, तो संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड में उनकी श्रेष्ठता सिद्ध हो जाएगी। विश्वामित्र जी ने प्रतिज्ञा की:
हे राजन्! तुम वशिष्ठ के शाप से चांडाल बने हो, परंतु मैं अपने उग्र तपोबल से तुम्हें इसी शरीर के साथ देवराज इंद्र के सामने स्वर्ग में बिठाकर रहूँगा!
विश्वामित्र जी ने एक विशाल महायज्ञ का आयोजन किया और सभी ऋषियों को निमंत्रण भेजा। परंतु वशिष्ठ जी के पुत्रों ने इस अस्वाभाविक यज्ञ में आने से मना कर दिया।
यज्ञ की पूर्णाहुति के समय विश्वामित्र ने देवताओं को अपना हविर्भाग (आहुति) लेने के लिए आवाह्न किया, परंतु धर्म-विरुद्ध कार्य होने के कारण कोई भी देवता यज्ञ-स्थल पर प्रकट नहीं हुआ।
इससे विश्वामित्र जी का क्रोध प्रचंड हो उठा। उन्होंने अपने हाथ में जल लिया और अपनी वर्षों की तपस्या का पुण्य राजा सत्यव्रत को अर्पित करते हुए कहा:
हे राजन्! देवताओं के न आने पर भी मेरी तपस्या का फल देखो। मैं तुम्हें अपनी साधना के बल से आकाश में ऊपर स्वर्ग की ओर उछालता हूँ महान तपोबल के प्रभाव से राजा सत्यव्रत का चांडाल शरीर धरती छोड़कर तेज़ी से आकाश की ओर उड़ने लगा।
राजा सत्यव्रत उड़ते हुए सीधे स्वर्ग लोक के द्वार पर पहुँच गए। जब देवताओं के राजा इन्द्र ने एक चांडाल रूपी मनुष्य को सशरीर स्वर्ग में प्रवेश करते देखा, तो वे क्रोधित हो गए।
इंद्र ने देवताओं के साथ मिलकर राजा को रोका और कहा:
हे नीच! तू गुरु के शाप से पतित हुआ है और प्रकृति के नियम को तोड़कर सशरीर यहाँ आया है। तेरा स्वर्ग में कोई स्थान नहीं है!
इंद्र ने एक शक्तिशाली प्रहार करके राजा सत्यव्रत को स्वर्ग से नीचे फेंक दिया।
राजा सत्यव्रत सिर के बल (उलटे) आकाश से धरती की ओर तेज़ी से गिरने लगे। भयभीत होकर वे आर्तनाद करने लगे—हे विश्वामित्र! हे ऋषिश्रेष्ठ! मेरी रक्षा कीजिए, मैं नीचे गिर रहा हूँ!
विश्वामित्र जी ने जब राजा की यह दुर्दशा देखी, तो उन्होंने अपने कमंडलु के जल से संकल्प लिया और गड़गड़ाती वाणी में कहा:
"तिष्ठ! तिष्ठ!" (वहीं ठहर जाओ!)
विश्वामित्र के तपोबल की शक्ति नीचे से ऊपर ढकेल रही थी और इंद्र का बल ऊपर से नीचे फेंक रहा था। परिणाम यह हुआ कि राजा सत्यव्रत न तो ऊपर स्वर्ग जा सके और न ही नीचे धरती पर गिर पाए। वे आकाश और पृथ्वी के बीचों-बीच अधर में (उलटे लटके हुए) अटक गए!
स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी और पाताल—इन तीनों लोकों से अलग तीन संकटापन्न स्थितियों में फँसने के कारण उनका नाम 'त्रिशंकु' पड़ा।
जब इंद्र ने त्रिशंकु को स्वीकार नहीं किया, तो विश्वामित्र जी ने इसे अपना व्यक्तिगत अपमान माना। उन्होंने अपने क्रोध और तपोबल से अधर में लटके त्रिशंकु के चारों ओर एक नया स्वर्ग, नए सप्तर्षि और नए नक्षत्र-मंडल (दूसरा ब्रह्मांड) बनाना शुरू कर दिया!
विश्वामित्र जी ने कहा:
यदि इंद्र मेरे राजा को अपने स्वर्ग में नहीं रहने देगा, तो मैं अपने तपोबल से एक दूसरा इंद्र और नया देवलोक बनाकर इस राजा को वहाँ का स्वामी बनाऊँगा सृष्टि के इस नए समानांतर विधान को देखकर ब्रह्मा जी और सभी देवता भयभीत होकर विश्वामित्र जी के पास पहुँचे।
ब्रह्मा जी ने अत्यंत मधुर वाणी में विश्वामित्र जी से कहा:
"हे ब्रह्मर्षि! शांत हो जाइए। आपका तपोबल अगाध है, परंतु सनातन प्रकृति और धर्म की मर्यादा को नष्ट मत कीजिए। नश्वर शरीर कभी मुख्य देवलोक में नहीं रह सकता।
विश्वामित्र जी द्वारा रचे गए ये नए नक्षत्र और तारे 'त्रिशंकु मंडल' के नाम से जाने जाएँगे राजा त्रिशंकु इसी अधर में बने नए लोक (त्रिशंकु लोक) में सशरीर निवास करेंगे, परंतु वे मुख्य स्वर्ग में प्रवेश नहीं करेंगे।वे उलटे लटके रहेंगे और उनके मुँह से जो लार टपकेगी, वही पृथ्वी पर 'कर्मनाशा नदी' के रूप में बहेगी (मान्यता है कि इस नदी के जल को छूने से संचित पुण्य नष्ट हो जाते हैं)।
अधर में उलटे लटके रहने के बाद राजा सत्यव्रत (त्रिशंकु) की आँखें खुलीं। उनका सारा अहंकार चूर-चूर हो गया। उन्होंने स्वीकार किया
मेरे कुलगुरु वशिष्ठ जी का ज्ञान ही सत्य था। मैंने व्यर्थ के अहंकार और देह-सक्ति में पड़कर अपना लोक और परलोक दोनों बिगाड़ लिया।

In the Solar Dynasty, there reigned a king named Satyavrata, who was immensely glorious and valorous. He ruled his subjects righteously, yet a subtle arrogance regarding his beauty, strength, and power was taking root within him. One day, while seated in his royal court, a unique and haughty thought crossed his mind:
"All virtuous souls in this world, upon death, shed their physical bodies and ascend to heaven merely as spirits. But I am such a magnificent and powerful king that I ought to ascend to heaven in this very physical body—composed of the five elements—so that even the gods may pay homage to my flesh-and-blood form!"
Satyavrata visited the ashram of his family preceptor, Maharshi Vashistha, and, offering his salutations, said, "O Brahmarshi! Through the power of your penance, please conduct a *Yajna* (sacrificial ritual) that enables me to ascend to the celestial realm in this very living body."
Maharshi Vashistha perceived the situation through his divine vision and spoke to the king in a calm voice:
"O King! This idea runs counter to *Dharma* (righteousness), nature, and the cosmic order. This mortal body is composed of the five earthly elements—earth, water, fire, air, and ether. Taking it to heaven is both impossible and unrighteous. Abandon this futile obstinacy and continue to rule your subjects with a spirit of selfless service."
However, King Satyavrata was consumed by stubbornness. Instead of heeding Vashistha’s counsel, he declared that if the sage would not perform the ritual, he would seek out another. Following Vashistha’s refusal, King Satyavrata approached the sage's one hundred sons. When the sons of Vashistha saw the king disregarding the decision of their guru and father, they became furious and cursed him:
"O arrogant king! For disrespecting your guru's command, may you become a wretched and hideous *Chandala* (outcaste)!"
Upon receiving the curse, King Satyavrata’s divine form, royal attire, and ornaments vanished. His body turned black, his hair became disheveled, and his clothes turned into tattered rags. He was transformed into a terrifying and hideous *Chandala*. In this guise, even the subjects of Ayodhya failed to recognize him.
Saddened and humiliated, Satyavrata began wandering from forest to forest. Eventually, he arrived at the hermitage of Maharshi Vishvamitra. At that time, Vishvamitra was striving to prove his superiority over Maharshi Vashistha.
King Satyavrata, in the form of a *Chandala*, fell at Vishvamitra’s feet and tearfully recounted his plight.
Vishvamitra thought that if he could accomplish through his penance the very task Vashistha had forbidden, his superiority would be established throughout the universe. Vishvamitra vowed:
"O King! You have become a *Chandala* due to Vashistha's curse, but through the power of my intense penance, I shall ensure you are seated in heaven alongside Indra—the King of Gods—in this very body!"
Vishvamitra organized a grand *Mahayajna* (great sacrificial ritual) and invited all the sages. However, the sons of Vashistha refused to attend this unconventional ritual.
At the time of the final offering (*Purnahuti*), Vishvamitra invoked the gods to accept their share of the oblation; however, as the ritual violated the principles of *Dharma* (righteousness), no deity appeared at the sacrificial site.
This ignited Vishvamitra's fury. He took water in his hand and, transferring the merit of his years of penance to King Satyavrata, declared:
"O King! Since the gods have not..." "Witness the fruit of my penance. By the power of my spiritual practice, I shall hurl you upwards toward the heavens." Under the influence of this immense ascetic power, King Satyavrata’s *Chandala* body left the earth and soared rapidly toward the sky.
As he ascended, King Satyavrata reached the very gates of *Svarga Loka* (Heaven). When Indra, the King of the Gods, saw a man in the guise of a *Chandala* attempting to enter heaven in his physical body, he became enraged.
Indra, along with the other gods, intercepted the King and declared:
"O wretch! You have fallen due to your Guru's curse, and by defying the laws of nature, you have come here in your physical form. You have no place in heaven!"
With a powerful blow, Indra hurled King Satyavrata down from heaven.
King Satyavrata began to plummet rapidly toward the earth, falling headfirst. Terrified, he cried out in anguish, "O Vishvamitra! O greatest of sages! Save me—I am falling!"
Upon witnessing the King's plight, Vishvamitra made a solemn vow using water from his *kamandalu* (ascetic's water pot) and proclaimed in a thunderous voice:
"Halt!" "Tistha!" (Halt right there!)
The power of Vishvamitra's ascetic energy was pushing upwards from below, while Indra's might was forcing downwards from above. The result was that King Satyavrata could neither ascend to heaven nor fall to the earth; he remained suspended in mid-air—hanging upside down—between the sky and the ground!
Because he was trapped in a precarious state—suspended between the three realms of Heaven, Earth, and the Underworld—he came to be known as 'Trishanku'.
When Indra refused to accept Trishanku, Vishvamitra took it as a personal affront. Fueled by his rage and the power of his penance, he began to create a new heaven, a new set of Saptarishis (Seven Sages), and new constellations—essentially a second universe—around the suspended Trishanku!
Vishvamitra declared:
"If Indra will not allow my king to reside in his heaven, then through the power of my penance, I shall create a second Indra and a new celestial realm, and make this king its sovereign." Terrified by this new parallel cosmic order, Brahma and the other deities approached Vishvamitra.
Brahma spoke to Vishvamitra in a most gentle and soothing voice:
"O Brahmarshi! Please calm yourself. Your ascetic power is immense, yet do not violate the established order of eternal nature and Dharma. A mortal body can never reside in the supreme celestial realm.
These new constellations and stars created by you shall henceforth be known as the 'Trishanku Mandala'..."
