राजा विक्रमादित्य एक बार फिर बिना थके बेताल को अपने कंधे पर लादकर श्मशान की ओर चल पड़े। बेताल ने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा, "राजन! तुम्हारी इस दृढ़ता का मैं कायल हूँ। चलो, सफर को छोटा करने के लिए तुम्हें एक और कहानी सुनाता हूँ।"
एक राज्य में मदनमंजरी नाम की एक बेहद खूबसूरत और संस्कारी कन्या रहती थी। जब वह विवाह योग्य हुई, तो उसके पिता के पास तीन योग्य युवकों के विवाह के प्रस्ताव आए। तीनों ही युवक रूपवान, गुणवान और बुद्धिमान थे।
पहला युवक: शास्त्रों का बहुत बड़ा ज्ञाता और ज्ञानी था।
दूसरा युवक: अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में निपुण और महान योद्धा था।
तीसरा युवक: कला और संगीत का धनी था।
पिता असमंजस में थे कि बेटी का हाथ किसके हाथ में दें, क्योंकि तीनों में से किसी को भी मना करना अन्याय होता।
अभी पिता कोई निर्णय ले ही पाते कि एक दिन बगीचे में टहलते समय मदनमंजरी को एक जहरीले सांप ने डस लिया। वैद्य बुलाए गए, लेकिन जहर पूरे शरीर में फैल चुका था और मदनमंजरी की मृत्यु हो गई। पूरे परिवार में मातम छा गया।
तीनों युवक भी वहाँ पहुँच गए। मदनमंजरी की मृत्यु से तीनों गहरे सदमे में थे। वे उसे श्मशान ले गए और उसका अंतिम संस्कार किया। लेकिन मदनमंजरी के प्रति उनका प्रेम इतना गहरा था कि उन्होंने श्मशान से लौटने से मना कर दिया:
1. पहला युवक: उसने मदनमंजरी की अस्थियों और राख को एक पोटली में समेटा और वहीं श्मशान में ही एक कुटिया बनाकर रहने लगा। वह दिन-रात उसकी याद में रोता रहता था।
2. दूसरा युवक: वह संसार से विरक्त होकर संन्यासी बन गया और देश-विदेश में ज्ञान और तंत्र-मंत्र की खोज में निकल पड़ा ताकि किसी तरह इस दुःख से उबर सके।
3. तीसरा युवक: वह मदनमंजरी के घर वापस गया और उसके माता-पिता की सेवा में लग गया, क्योंकि वह उन्हें मदनमंजरी का ही रूप मानता था।
कुछ समय बाद, जो युवक संन्यासी बनकर घूम रहा था, उसे यात्रा के दौरान एक सिद्ध साधु मिले। उन साधु से उसने 'संजीवनी विद्या' (मृतक को जीवित करने का मंत्र) सीख ली। विद्या सीखते ही वह तुरंत दौड़कर वापस उसी श्मशान में पहुँचा जहाँ मदनमंजरी का अंतिम संस्कार हुआ था।
उसने बाकी दोनों युवकों को भी वहाँ बुलाया। पहले युवक ने मदनमंजरी की राख और अस्थियां जमीन पर रखीं। संन्यासी युवक ने मंत्र पढ़ना शुरू किया और उस पर अभिमंत्रित जल छिड़का। देखते ही देखते, चमत्कार हुआ और मदनमंजरी साक्षात् जीवित होकर उठ बैठी। वह पहले से भी ज्यादा सुंदर लग रही थी।
मदनमंजरी को जीवित देखकर तीनों युवक बेहद खुश हुए, लेकिन तुरंत ही उनके बीच फिर से विवाद शुरू हो गया कि अब मदनमंजरी से विवाह कौन करेगा?
संन्यासी युवक ने कहा: "मैंने इसे अपने मंत्र बल से जीवनदान दिया है, इसलिए इस पर मेरा हक है।"
राख सहेजने वाले युवक ने कहा: "अगर मैंने इसकी अस्थियों और राख को संभालकर न रखा होता, तो तुम मंत्र किस पर फूंकते? इसलिए यह मेरी है।"
माता-पिता की सेवा करने वाले ने कहा: "जब तुम दोनों यहाँ नहीं थे, तब मैंने इसके परिवार को संभाला और इसके लिए प्रार्थना की, इसलिए हक मेरा बनता है।"
कहानी यहाँ रोककर बेताल ने विक्रमादित्य से पूछा, "हे श्रेष्ठ राजा विक्रमादित्य! अब तुम न्याय करो। बताओ कि धर्म और नीति के अनुसार मदनमंजरी का असली पति कौन होना चाहिए? यदि तुमने सही उत्तर नहीं दिया, तो तुम्हारे सिर के टुकड़े हो जाएंगे।"
राजा विक्रमादित्य का उत्तर
राजा विक्रमादित्य ने शांत रहकर विचार किया और कहा:
"हे बेताल! न्याय के अनुसार मदनमंजरी का विवाह तीसरे युवक से होना चाहिए, जिसने उसके माता-पिता की सेवा की थी।
जिस युवक ने उसे जीवनदान दिया (संन्यासी), वह मंत्रदाता होने के कारण उसका 'पिता' तुल्य हो गया।
जिस युवक ने उसकी अस्थियों और राख को अपनी छाती से लगाकर रखा, वह मृत शरीर के साथ रहने के कारण उसका 'भाई' समान हो गया।लेकिन जिस तीसरे युवक ने म
दनमंजरी के वियोग में उसके परिवार को अपना माना और निस्वार्थ भाव से सेवा की, वही सच्चे 'पति' के धर्म का पालन कर रहा था। इसलिए वही उसका असली हकदार है।"
शर्त के अनुसार:
"बहुत सुंदर न्याय किया राजन! लेकिन तुम्हारी चुप्पी फिर टूट गई।" बेताल हँसा और हवा में गायब होकर वापस पेड़ पर जा लटका।

Once again, King Vikramaditya hoisted Betal onto his shoulder without tiring and set off towards the cremation ground. Smiling, Betal said, "O King! I am truly impressed by your steadfastness. Come, let me tell you another story to shorten the journey."
In a certain kingdom lived a maiden named Madanmanjari, who was exceptionally beautiful and virtuous. When she came of marriageable age, her father received marriage proposals from three worthy young men. All three were handsome, accomplished, and intelligent.
The first young man: A profound scholar well-versed in the scriptures.
The second young man: A great warrior, skilled in the use of weapons and combat.
The third young man: A master of the arts and music.
Her father was in a dilemma regarding whom to give his daughter's hand to, as rejecting any one of them would have been unjust.
Before the father could make a decision, Madanmanjari was bitten by a poisonous snake one day while strolling in the garden. Physicians were summoned, but the venom had already spread throughout her body, and she passed away. Grief engulfed the entire family.
The three young men also arrived there. They were deeply shocked by Madanmanjari's death. They took her to the cremation ground and performed her last rites. However, their love for her was so profound that they refused to leave the cremation ground:
1. The first young man: He gathered Madanmanjari's ashes and remains into a bundle and built a small hut right there in the cremation ground to live in. He wept day and night, consumed by memories of her.
2. The second young man: Renouncing the world, he became an ascetic and set out across the country and abroad in search of knowledge and mystical arts, hoping to somehow overcome his grief.
3. The third young man: He returned to Madanmanjari's home and dedicated himself to serving her parents, as he viewed them as the living embodiment of Madanmanjari herself. Some time later, the young man who had become an ascetic encountered an enlightened sage during his travels. From this sage, he learned the *Sanjivani Vidya*—the art of reviving the dead. Upon mastering this knowledge, he immediately rushed back to the cremation ground where Madanmanjari’s last rites had been performed.
He summoned the other two young men to the spot as well. The first young man placed Madanmanjari’s ashes and bones on the ground. The ascetic began chanting the mantra and sprinkled sanctified water over the remains. Before their very eyes, a miracle occurred: Madanmanjari came back to life and sat up. She appeared even more beautiful than before.
The three young men were overjoyed to see Madanmanjari alive, but a dispute immediately arose among them regarding who should marry her.
The ascetic said, "I restored her to life through the power of my mantra; therefore, she belongs to me."
The young man who had preserved the remains argued, "Had I not carefully gathered and kept her bones and ashes, upon what would you have chanted your mantra? Thus, she is mine."
The one who had served her parents said, "When neither of you was present, I took care of her family and prayed for her; therefore, the right to marry her belongs to me."
Pausing the story here, Betal asked Vikramaditya, "O noble King Vikramaditya! Now, deliver your judgment. Tell me, according to the principles of righteousness and justice, who should be Madanmanjari’s true husband? If you fail to give the correct answer, your head will shatter into pieces." King Vikramaditya's Answer
King Vikramaditya reflected calmly and said:
"O Betal! According to the principles of justice, Madanmanjari should be married to the third young man—the one who served her parents.
The young man who saved her life (the ascetic) became like a 'father' to her, as he was the one who imparted the sacred mantra.
The young man who held her ashes and remains close to his chest became like a 'brother' to her, having stayed by her mortal remains.
However, the third young man—who embraced her family as his own during her absence and served them selflessly—was the one fulfilling the true duty of a 'husband.' Therefore, he alone is the rightful one to marry her."
As per the condition:
"A truly excellent judgment, O King! But you have broken your silence once again." Betal laughed, vanished into the air, and returned to hang from the tree.
This story teaches us that true love lies not in asserting rights or performing miracles. True love is found in service, dedication, and the fulfillment of responsibilities. The person who stands by your family during your difficult times is your greatest well-wisher.
