प्राचीन काल में 'सत्यतपा' नाम के एक परम तपस्वी मुनि थे। वे गंगा तट पर एक पाँव पर खड़े होकर हज़ारों वर्षों तक तपस्या कर रहे थे। उनका संकल्प था कि वे जब तक साक्षात भगवान विष्णु के रूप के दर्शन नहीं कर लेंगे, तब तक अपने नेत्र बंद ही रखेंगे।
तपस्या करते-करते उनके चारों ओर बाँबी (दीमक का टीला) बन गई, परंतु मुनि अपने ध्यान से नहीं डिगे।
एक दिन उस वन में 'कलयुग' का प्रवेश हुआ। कलयुग ने देखा कि मुनि सत्यतपा की तपस्या इतनी उग्र है कि यदि यह पूर्ण हो गई, तो इस पूरे क्षेत्र से कलयुग का प्रभाव सदा के लिए समाप्त हो जाएगा।
कलयुग ने मुनि को छलने की योजना बनाई। उसने अपनी माया से मुनि के सामने एक अत्यंत सुंदर सरोवर और दिव्य आश्रम का दृश्य रच दिया। साथ ही, कलयुग ने एक बहुत ही वृद्ध और असहाय वृद्ध ब्राह्मण का रूप धारण किया और मुनि की बाँबी के पास जाकर जोर-जोर से रोने लगा।
मुनि सत्यतपा ने जब किसी असहाय वृद्ध के रोने की करुण पुकार सुनी, तो उनका मन करुणा से भर गया। उन्होंने सोचा—"किसी दुखी व्यक्ति की सहायता करना ही सबसे बड़ा धर्म है।"
मुनि ने अपने नेत्र खोले और बाँबी से बाहर आए। सामने वृद्ध ब्राह्मण को देखकर उन्होंने पूछा:
"हे द्विजश्रेष्ठ! आप इस बीहड़ वन में इस प्रकार रो क्यों रहे हैं?"
वृद्ध रूपी कलयुग ने बिलखते हुए कहा:
"हे मुनिवर! मैं अत्यंत निर्धन और बेसहारा हूँ। मेरी एक ही कन्या है, जिसका विवाह आज ही होना है। परंतु मेरे पास उसे देने के लिए न तो अन्न है और न ही कोई वस्त्र। यदि आज उसका विवाह न हुआ, तो मैं और मेरी पुत्री प्राण त्याग देंगे।
मुनि सत्यतपा के पास तो कोई धन नहीं था, वे तो केवल तपस्वी थे। उन्होंने कहा—"हे ब्राह्मण! मेरे पास तो केवल मेरा तपोबल है, धन कहाँ से लाऊँ?
कलयुग (वृद्ध) ने कहा:
"मुनिवर! पास ही के नगर में एक राजा हैं जो तपस्वियों का बहुत सम्मान करते हैं। यदि आप केवल १ घंटे के लिए मेरे साथ राजा के दरबार में चलकर मेरे लिए थोड़ा धन माँग दें, तो मेरा जीवन बच जाएगा।मुनि सत्यतपा उस वृद्ध की बातों में आ गए और उनके साथ नगर की ओर चल पड़े।
जैसे ही मुनि सत्यतपा ने उस सुंदर नगर में प्रवेश किया, कलयुग की माया का प्रभाव उन पर चढ़ने लगा। राजा ने मुनि का बड़ा आदर किया और कहा:
"हे मुनिवर! आप इस वृद्ध के लिए धन माँग रहे हैं, परंतु मेरे राज्य का नियम है कि जो माँगने आता है, उसे अपनी कोई प्रिय वस्तु दान में देनी पड़ती है। आप मुझे अपनी तपस्या का आधा फल दे दीजिए, मैं इस ब्राह्मण को अगाध स्वर्णमुद्राएँ दे दूँगा।
मुनि ने सोचा कि किसी गरीब की बेटी का घर बस जाएगा, तो क्या हरज़ है! उन्होंने अपनी आधी तपस्या का फल राजा को दे दिया।
धन मिलते ही वह वृद्ध (कलयुग) गायब हो गया। परंतु मुनि सत्यतपा जब वापस अपने आश्रम की ओर लौटने लगे, तो कलयुग के प्रभाव के कारण उनका मन बदल गया। उन्हें लगा कि तपस्या में क्या रखा है, अब तो संसार के सुख भोगने चाहिए। वे उसी नगर में एक सुंदर स्त्री से विवाह करके गृहस्थ बन गए और वर्षों तक सांसारिक मोह-माया में फँसे रहे।
कई वर्षों बाद जब मुनि
सत्यतपा वृद्ध हो गए और रोगग्रस्त हो गए, तब उन्हें अचानक अपने पूर्व जन्मों और अपनी उस अखंड तपस्या का ध्यान आया। वे रोने लगे और सोचने लगे:अहो! मैं भगवान विष्णु के दर्शन
के इतने निकट था, परंतु कलयुग की थोड़ी सी माया और झूठी दया के चक्कर में आकर मैंने अपनी हज़ारों वर्षों की तपस्या गँवा दी!
मुनि ने अत्यंत कातर भाव से अश्रु बहाते हुए भगवान श्रीहरि को पुकारा:
"हे जगन्नाथ! हे मधुसूदन! कलयुग की माया अत्यंत प्रबल है। मुझे इस मोह-जाल से बचाइए तभी उनके सामने साक्षात भगवान विष्णु प्रकट हो गए। भगवान ने मुस्कुराते हुए मुनि से कहा:
"हे सत्यतपा! दुखी मत हो। जो कलयुग रूपी वृद्ध तुम्हारे पास आया था, वह तुम्हारी परीक्षा थी। कलयुग का सबसे बड़ा अस्त्र 'छद्म दया' (गलत समय पर गलत मोह) और 'तृष्णा' है। परंतु तुमने अंत में पश्चाताप करके और मेरा स्मरण करके कलयुग के प्रभाव को काट दिया है।
भगवान श्रीहरि ने मुनि सत्यतपा के मस्तक पर अपना कर-कमल (हाथ) रखा, जिससे मुनि के समस्त संचित पाप और मोह नष्ट हो गए और वे साक्षात विष्णुलोक (वैकुंठ) को प्राप्त हुए।

In ancient times, there lived a sage named 'Satyatapa' who was a supreme ascetic. He had been performing penance on the banks of the Ganges, standing on one leg for thousands of years. He had vowed to keep his eyes closed until he beheld the actual form of Lord Vishnu.
As he continued his penance, an anthill formed around him, yet the sage did not waver from his meditation.
One day, 'Kaliyuga' entered that forest. Kaliyuga observed that Sage Satyatapa's penance was so intense that, if completed, it would forever eradicate Kaliyuga's influence from the entire region.
Kaliyuga devised a plan to deceive the sage. Using his illusory powers, he conjured a vision of a magnificent lake and a divine hermitage before the sage. Simultaneously, Kaliyuga assumed the guise of a frail, helpless old Brahmin and went near the sage's anthill, weeping loudly.
When Sage Satyatapa heard the pitiful wailing of a helpless old man, his heart filled with compassion. He thought, "Helping a distressed person is the highest form of righteousness."
The sage opened his eyes and emerged from the anthill. Seeing the old Brahmin before him, he asked:
"O noble Brahmin! Why are you weeping in this desolate forest?"
Kaliyuga, in the guise of the old man, sobbed and said:
"O great sage! I am destitute and helpless. I have an only daughter whose wedding is scheduled for today. Yet, I have neither food nor clothing to give her. If her wedding does not take place today, both my daughter and I shall give up our lives."
Sage Satyatapa possessed no wealth; he was merely an ascetic. He said, "O Brahmin! I possess only the power of my penance; from where could I possibly procure wealth?" Kali Yuga (in the guise of an old man) said:
"O noble sage! There is a king in a nearby city who holds ascetics in high regard. If you accompany me to the king's court for just one hour and ask for some wealth on my behalf, my life will be saved." Sage Satyatapa was swayed by the old man's words and set out with him toward the city.
As soon as Sage Satyatapa entered that beautiful city, the influence of Kali Yuga’s illusion began to take hold of him. The king treated the sage with great respect and said:
"O noble sage! You are asking for wealth for this old man, but the rule of my kingdom is that anyone who comes to ask for something must donate a cherished possession of their own. If you give me half the merit of your penance, I will bestow immense wealth in gold coins upon this Brahmin."
The sage thought, "What harm is there if a poor man's daughter gets happily married?" He agreed and transferred the merit of half his penance to the king.
As soon as the wealth was received, the old man (Kali Yuga) vanished. However, as Sage Satyatapa began his return journey to his ashram, his mindset shifted due to the influence of Kali Yuga. He felt that there was no point in penance and that he should instead enjoy worldly pleasures. He married a beautiful woman in that very city, became a householder, and remained entangled in worldly attachments for years.
Many years later, when Sage Satyatapa had grown old and infirm, he suddenly recalled his past lives and that profound penance he had once performed. He wept and lamented:
"Alas! I was so close to beholding Lord Vishnu, yet, swayed by a mere illusion of Kali Yuga and a sense of misplaced compassion, I squandered the merit of thousands of years of penance!" Shedding tears and filled with deep anguish, the sage called out to Lord Sri Hari:
"O Lord of the Universe! O Madhusudana! The illusion of Kali Yuga is immensely powerful. Please save me from this web of attachment." Just then, Lord Vishnu appeared before him in person. Smiling, the Lord said to the sage:
"O Satyatapa! Do not grieve. The old man who approached you—representing Kali Yuga—was merely testing you. Kali Yuga’s most potent weapons are 'deceptive compassion' (misplaced attachment at the wrong time) and 'insatiable craving.' However, by feeling remorse and remembering Me, you have successfully overcome the influence of Kali Yuga."
Lord Sri Hari placed His lotus-like hand upon Sage Satyatapa’s forehead; instantly, all the sage's accumulated sins and attachments were destroyed, and he attained the abode of Vishnu (Vaikuntha).
