बुराई की ऊपरी कांट-छांट से वह नहीं मिटती,उसे तो उसकी जड़ से मिटाना होता है। जब तक जड़ को नष्ट नहीं किया जाएगा तब तक कोई लाभ नहीं होगा।
किसी नगर में एक आदमी रहता था। उसके आँगन में एक पौधा उग आया। कुछ दिनों बाद वह बड़ा हो गया और उस पर फल लगने लगे। एक बार एक फल पककर नीचे गिर गया। उस फल को एक कुत्ते ने खा लिया। जैसे ही कुत्ते ने फल खाया, उसके प्राण निकल गए। आदमी ने सोचा--कोई बात होगी जिससे कुत्ता मर गया। पर उसने पेड़ के फल पर ध्यान नहीं दिया।
कुछ समय बाद उधर से एक लड़का निकला। फल देखकर उसके मन में लालच आ गया और उसने किसी तरह फल तोड़कर खा लिया। फल को खाते ही लड़का मर गया। मरे हुए लड़के को देख आदमी की समझ में आ गया कि यह जहरीला पेड़ है। उसने कुल्हाड़ी ली और वृक्ष के सारे फल काटकर गिरा दिए। थोड़े दिन बाद पेड़ में फिर फल लग गए। लेकिन इस बार पहले से भी ज्यादा बड़े फल लगे थे। आदमी ने फिर कुल्हाड़ी से फल के साथ-साथ शाखाओं को भी काट दिया। परंतु कुछ दिन बाद पेड़ फिर फलों से लद गया। अब आदमी की समझ में कुछ नहीं आया। वह परेशान हो गया। तभी उसके पड़ोसी ने उसे देखा और उसकी परेशानी का कारण पूछा। आदमी ने सारी बातें बता दी।
यह सब सुनकर पड़ोसी ने कहा --तुमने पेड़ के फल तोड़े,उसकी शाखाएं काटी , पर तुम्हारी समझ में नहीं आया कि जब तक पेड़ की जड़ रहेगी तब तक पेड़ रहेगा और उसमें फल आते रहेंगे। अगर तुम इससे छुटकारा चाहते हो तो इसकी जड़ काटो। तब आदमी की समझ में आया कि बुराई की ऊपरी कांट-छांट से वह नहीं मिटती,उसे तो उसकी जड़ से मिटाना चाहिए। उसने कुल्हाड़ी लेकर पेड़ की जड़ को काट दिया और हमेशा के लिए चिंता मुक्त हो गया।
इसी तरह बुराई की जड़ हमारे मन में होती है। जब तक जड़ को नष्ट नहीं किया जाएगा, मनुष्य को जहरीला बनाने वाले फल आते रहेंगे। अतः मन को नियंत्रण मे रखो।

A man lived in a certain town. A plant sprouted in his courtyard. After some time, it grew large and began to bear fruit. Once, a ripe fruit fell to the ground, and a dog ate it. As soon as the dog consumed the fruit, it died. The man wondered if there was some other reason for the dog's death, but he paid no heed to the tree's fruit.
Some time later, a boy passed by. Seeing the fruit, he was tempted; he managed to pluck and eat it. The boy died immediately upon eating the fruit. Seeing the dead boy, the man realized that the tree was poisonous. He took an axe and chopped off all the fruit. A few days later, the tree bore fruit again—but this time, the fruits were even larger than before. The man then used his axe to cut off the branches along with the fruit. Yet, after a few days, the tree was laden with fruit once more. The man was baffled and distressed. Just then, his neighbor saw him and asked the reason for his trouble. The man explained the whole situation.
Upon hearing this, the neighbor said, "You plucked the fruit and cut the branches, but you failed to realize that as long as the root remains, the tree will survive and continue to bear fruit. If you want to get rid of it, you must cut the root." The man finally understood that evil cannot be eliminated by superficial trimming; it must be eradicated from the root. He took his axe, cut the tree's root, and was freed from his worry forever. Similarly, the root of evil lies within our minds. Unless that root is destroyed, the fruits that poison a person will continue to grow. Therefore, keep your mind under control.
