पुरानी साड़ियों के बदले बर्तनों के लिए मोल भाव करती एक सम्पन्न घर की महिला ने अंततः दो साड़ियों के बदले एक टब पसंद किया . "नहीं दीदी ! बदले में तीन साड़ियों से कम तो नही लूँगा ." बर्तन वाले ने टब को वापस अपने हाथ में लेते हुए कहा -अरे भैया ! एक एक बार की पहनी हुई तो हैं.. ! बिल्कुल नये जैसी . एक टब के बदले में तो ये दो भी ज्यादा हैं , मैं तो फिर भी दे रही हूँ . नहीं नहीं , तीन से कम में तो नहीं हो पायेगा ." वह फिर बोला ।
एक दूसरे को अपनी पसंद के सौदे पर मनाने की इस प्रक्रिया के दौरान गृह स्वामिनी को घर के खुले दरवाजे पर देखकर सहसा गली से गुजरती अर्द्ध विक्षिप्त महिला ने वहाँ आकर खाना माँगा...।
आदतन हिकारत से उठी महिला की नजरें उस महिला के कपडों पर गयी.... अलग अलग कतरनों को गाँठ बाँध कर बनायी गयी उसकी साड़ी उसके युवा शरीर को ढँकने का असफल प्रयास कर रही थी....।
एकबारगी उस महिला ने मुँह बिचकाया . पर सुबह सुबह का याचक है सोचकर अंदर से रात की बची रोटियाँ मँगवायी . उसे रोटी देकर पलटते हुए उसने बर्तन वाले से कहा -*
तो भैय्या ! क्या सोचा ? दो साड़ियों में दे रहे हो या मैं वापस रख लूँ ! "बर्तन वाले ने उसे इस बार चुपचाप टब पकड़ाया और दोनों पुरानी साड़ियाँ अपने गठ्ठर में बाँध कर बाहर निकला...।
हाथ में पकड़ा हुआ टब अब उसे चुभता हुआ सा महसूस हो रहा था....! बर्तन वाले के आगे अब वो खुद को हीन महसूस कर रही थी . कुछ हैसियत न होने के बावजूद बर्तन वाले ने उसे परास्त कर दिया था ! !! वह अब अच्छी तरह समझ चुकी थी कि बिना झिकझिक किये उसने मात्र दो ही साड़ियों में टब क्यों दे दिया था ।
कुछ देने के लिए आदमी की हैसियत नहीं , दिल बड़ा होना चाहिए....!! आपके पास क्या है ? और कितना है ? यह कोई मायने नहीं रखता ! आपकी सोच व नियत सर्वोपरि होना आवश्यक है ।

A woman from an affluent household was haggling with a utensil vendor, exchanging old sarees for vessels; she finally settled on a tub in exchange for two sarees. "No, *Didi*! I won't accept fewer than three sarees for it," the vendor said, taking the tub back into his hands. "Oh, brother! They’ve barely been worn—just once! They look brand new. Even two is a generous exchange for a single tub, yet I’m offering them anyway." "No, no, it simply can't be done for less than three," he insisted.
Amidst this process of trying to reach a mutually agreeable deal, the lady of the house—standing by the open doorway—was suddenly approached by a mentally unstable woman passing through the street, who asked for food.
The lady’s gaze, habitually filled with disdain, fell upon the stranger's clothes; the saree—fashioned by knotting together various mismatched scraps of fabric—was making a futile attempt to cover her youthful body.
For a moment, the lady grimaced in distaste, but reasoning that this was a beggar seeking alms early in the morning, she had some leftover rotis from the previous night brought out. After handing the food over and turning back, she asked the vendor—
"So, brother! What have you decided? Are you giving it for two sarees, or should I put them back?" This time, the vendor silently handed her the tub, bundled the two old sarees into his pack, and stepped outside.
Smiling at her victory, the lady rose to close the door when her gaze fell upon a scene at the end of the street: the vendor had opened his bundle and was handing one of the two sarees she had given him to that mentally unstable woman, so she could cover herself!
The tub she held in her hands now felt like a painful prick against her skin. She felt diminished in the face of the vendor; despite having no status or wealth, he had truly surpassed her. She now fully understood why she had handed over the tub—along with just two sarees—without any fuss.
To give something, one needs a big heart, not necessarily wealth...!! What you have, or how much you have, does not matter! Your mindset and intentions are what truly count.
And only someone who has lived through such circumstances can truly understand this.
