नारद जी ने पूछा:
हे भगवान्! तीन नेत्रों वाले भगवान् शिव ने समस्त संसार के स्वामी श्री विष्णु को सभी लोकों में पूजित 'सुदर्शन चक्र' नाम का यह अस्त्र क्यों दिया था?
पुलस्त्य जी बोले:
हे नारद जी! आप चक्र दान से जुड़ी और भगवान् शिव की महिमा को बढ़ाने वाली इस पुरानी कथा को ध्यान लगाकर सुनिए—
प्राचीन काल में वेद और वेदांगों के ज्ञाता, महा-भाग्यशाली और गृहस्थ धर्म का पालन करने वाले वीतमन्यु नाम के एक श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण थे। उनकी धर्मपत्नी का नाम आत्रेयी था, जो बहुत भाग्यशाली, सुशील, पतिव्रता और अपने पति में ही अपने प्राण बसाने वाली थीं। वे 'धर्मशीला' नाम से प्रसिद्ध थीं। अपने नियम-धर्म के अनुसार ऋतुकाल में ही उनसे महर्षि का समागम हुआ, जिससे उनके यहाँ 'उपमन्यु' नाम का एक अत्यंत सुंदर पुत्र पैदा हुआ।
स्थ्य देने वाली मीठी खीर खाई। उस ऋषि-पुत्र ने जब पहली बार दूध का अद्भुत स्वाद चखा, तो अगले दिन जब माता ने वही चावल का घोल दिया, तो उसने उसे पीने से साफ मना कर दिया।
इसके बाद, दूध पीने की इच्छा से वह छोटा बालक प्यासे चातक पक्षी की तरह बिलख-बिलखकर रोने लगा। अपने बच्चे को रोता देख माता की आँखों में आँसू भर आए और वे भावुक होकर गद्गद गले से बोलीं—
"बेटा! जब तक हाथ में त्रिशूल धारण करने वाले, पार्वती के पति, पशुपति विरूपाक्ष (शिवजी) प्रसन्न न हों, तब तक दूध से बना भोजन भला कहाँ से मिल सकता है? हे पुत्र! यदि तुम तुरंत स्वास्थ्यवर्धक दूध पीना चाहते हो, तो त्रिशूलधारी विरूपाक्ष महादेव की भक्ति और सेवा करो। संपूर्ण संसार के आधार और सबका कल्याण करने वाले भगवान् शिव अगर प्रसन्न हो जाएँ, तो दूध तो बहुत छोटी बात है, पीने के लिए सीधा अमृत मिल सकता है!
माता की बात सुनकर वीतमन्यु के पुत्र उपमन्यु ने पूछा— "माताजी! आप जिनकी पूजा-सेवा करने को कह रही हैं, वे विरूपाक्ष कौन हैं?"
तब धर्मशीला ने अपने पुत्र को धर्म से भरी यह कथा सुनानी शुरू की बेटा! सुनो, मैं तुम्हें बताती हूँ कि ये विरूपाक्ष कौन हैं। पुराने समय में 'श्रीदामा' नाम का एक बहुत शक्तिशाली असुरों का राजा था। उसने पूरी दुनिया को अपने अधीन कर लिया और लक्ष्मी (समृद्धि) पर अपना अधिकार जमा लिया। उस दुष्टात्मा ने तीनों लोकों को श्रीहीन (कांतिहीन) कर दिया। इसके बाद उस महाबली असुर की नीयत और बिगड़ी और उसने भगवान् वासुदेव के वक्षस्थल पर सुशोभित 'श्रीवत्स' चिह्न को छीनने की इच्छा की।
उसकी इस बुरी इच्छा को जानकर भगवान् जनार्दन (विष्णु) उस असुर का वध करने का उपाय सोचने लगे और भगवान् महेश्वर (शिव) के पास पहुँचे। उस समय योग का रूप धारण किए हुए अविनाशी शिवजी हिमालय की ऊँची चोटी के चिकने धरातल पर विराजमान थे। वहाँ पहुँचकर, हजारों सिर वाले और सर्वसमर्थ जगन्नाथ श्री विष्णु ने खुद ही अपनी आत्मा के रूप में स्थित भगवान् शिव की आराधना शुरू की योगियों द्वारा जाने जाने वाले उस अव्यक्त परम ब्रह्म का जाप करते हुए विष्णु जी पूरे एक हजार वर्षों से भी अधिक समय तक केवल अपने पैर के एक अँगूठे पर खड़े रहकर कठोर तपस्या करते रहे।
उनकी इस घोर तपस्या से श्रीमान् महादेव अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने विष्णु जी को अत्यंत श्रेष्ठ, प्रत्यक्ष तेज से जगमगाता हुआ दिव्य 'सुदर्शन चक्र' प्रदान किया। सभी जीवों के लिए भय पैदा करने वाले कालचक्र के समान उस भयानक अस्त्र को देवताओं के देव विष्णु को सौंपते हुए शिवजी ने कहा—
'हे देवेश! यह सुदर्शन नाम का अस्त्र अत्यंत तीव्र गति से चलने वाला और दुनिया के सभी हथियारों को नष्ट करने वाला है। इसमें १२ तीलियाँ (अरे), ६ नाभियाँ और २ युग शामिल हैं। सज्जन और धर्म आत्माओं की रक्षा के लिए इसकी तीलियों में देवता, १२ महीने, राशियाँ, ६ ऋतुएँ, अग्नि, सोम, मित्र, वरुण, इन्द्र, अग्नि, विश्वेदेव, प्रजापति, धन्वंतरि देव, तपस्या और चैत्र से लेकर फाल्गुन तक के १२ महीने स्थापित हैं।
हे विभो! आप इस सर्वश्रेष्ठ अस्त्र को स्वीकार करें और बिना किसी डर के देवताओं के शत्रुओं का विनाश करें। असुर-राज द्वारा पूजित इस अमोघ (अचूक) अस्त्र को मैंने अपनी तपस्या के बल से अपने नेत्रों में धारण कर रखा था।शिवजी के ऐसा कहने पर विष्णु जी ने उनसे पूछा— 'हे शम्भो! मुझे यह कैसे विश्वास होगा कि यह अस्त्र सचमुच अमोघ (कभी निष्फल न होने वाला) है या मोघ (साधारण) है? हे प्रभु! यदि आपका यह चक्र सचमुच अमोघ है और बिना किसी बाधा के कहीं भी चल सकता है, तो इसकी परीक्षा लेने के लिए मैं इसे आपके ऊपर ही चलाकर देखता हूँ, आप इसे स्वीकार करें।'
विष्णु जी की बात सुनकर हाथ में पिनाक धनुष धारण करने वाले शिवजी ने सहजता से कहा— 'यदि ऐसा है, तो आप बेझिझक होकर मेरे ऊपर इसे चलाइए।
महेश के ऐसा कहते ही विष्णु जी ने सुदर्शन चक्र के प्रभाव और तेज को परखने के लिए उसे बड़ी तेजी से शिवजी की ओर फेंक दिया। विष्णु के हाथ से छूटा वह चक्र वेग से शिवजी के पास गया और उन्हें काटकर तीन भागों में बाँट दिया— विश्वेश, यज्ञेश और यज्ञयाजक।
भगवान् शिव को तीन टुकड़ों में कटते देख महाबाहु विष्णु जी घबरा गए और संकोच में भरकर तुरंत शिवजी के चरणों में प्रणाम करने लगे अपने चरणों में झुके हुए श्री विष्णु (दामोदर) को देखकर कल्याणकारी शिव जी ने प्रसन्न होकर बार-बार कहा— 'उठो! महाबाहो, उठो!
हे महाबाहु! चक्र की धार से केवल मेरा प्राकृत (शरीर का बाहरी) रूप कटा है, इससे मेरे वास्तविक स्वरूप या आत्मा को कोई चोट नहीं पहुँची है। वह तो कभी काटा या जलाया नहीं जा सकता। हे केशव! चक्र द्वारा किए गए मेरे ये तीनों भाग बहुत पुण्य देने वाले सिद्ध होंगे—
पहला भाग 'हिरण्याक्ष', दूसरा भाग 'सुवर्णाक्ष' और तीसरा भाग 'विरूपाक्ष' नाम से जाना जाएगा। ये तीनों रूप मनुष्यों को पुण्य देने वाले होंगे। हे विभो! अब उठिए और देवताओं के शत्रु का संहार करने जाइए। हे विष्णो! जब आप श्रीदामा का वध कर देंगे, तो सभी देवता प्रसन्न हो जाएँगे शिवजी की आज्ञा पाकर गरुड़ध्वज भगवान् विष्णु पर्वत की ऊँची चोटी पर गए और वहाँ उन्होंने दैत्य श्रीदामा को देखा। देवताओं का घमंड तोड़ने वाले उस असुर को देखते ही विष्णु जी ने गरजकर कहा— 'यह ले, तू मारा गया!' और बड़ी तेज़ी से चक्र चला दिया।
फिर क्या था, उस अद्भुत पराक्रमी चक्र ने एक ही पल में उस दैत्य का सिर धड़ से अलग कर दिया। सिर कटते ही वह असुर पर्वत की चोटी से ऐसे नीचे गिरा, जैसे बिजली गिरने से पहाड़ का कोई बड़ा टीला टूटकर गिरता है। देवताओं के शत्रु का अंत करने के बाद मुरारी (विष्णु) ने विरूपाक्ष शिवजी की फिर से पूजा-स्तुति की और उस दिव्य महा-अस्त्र सुदर्शन चक्र को लेकर क्षीरसागर में स्थित अपने निवास स्थान लौट गए।

Narada asked:
"O Lord! Why did the three-eyed Lord Shiva bestow the 'Sudarshan Chakra'—a weapon worshipped across all the worlds—upon Lord Vishnu, the master of the entire universe?"
Pulastya replied:
"O Narada! Listen attentively to this ancient tale regarding the gifting of the Chakra, a story that glorifies Lord Shiva—
In ancient times, there lived an eminent Brahmin named Veetamanyu, who was a scholar of the Vedas and Vedangas, exceedingly fortunate, and a devout follower of the householder's dharma. His wife was named Atreyi; she was blessed, virtuous, and utterly devoted to her husband, holding him as her very life. She was renowned by the name 'Dharmasheela.' In accordance with religious observances, the great sage united with her during the appropriate season, resulting in the birth of a remarkably handsome son named Upamanyu.
O best of sages! Due to extreme poverty and helplessness, Upamanyu's mother would feed her son a mixture of ground rice and water—calling it 'milk'—and raised him on this alone.
Unaware of the true taste of milk, the boy Upamanyu believed that rice-water to be milk. However, one day he accompanied his father to the home of another Brahmin, where he ate sweet *kheer* (rice pudding) that was both nourishing and satisfying. Having tasted the wondrous flavor of milk for the first time, the sage's son flatly refused to drink the rice-water mixture when his mother offered it the next day.Thereafter, consumed by a longing for milk, t
he little boy began to weep bitterly, much like a thirsty *Chatak* bird." Seeing her child weeping, the mother’s eyes welled up with tears; overcome with emotion, she spoke in a voice thick with feeling—
"My son! Unless Pashupati Virupaksha—the wielder of the trident, consort of Parvati, and Lord Shiva—is pleased, how can one possibly obtain food made from milk? Oh son! If you wish to drink wholesome milk right away, then devote yourself to the worship and service of the trident-bearing Mahadev Virupaksha. If Lord Shiva—the foundation of the entire universe and the benefactor of all—is pleased, then milk is a trivial matter; one could even obtain nectar itself to drink!"
Hearing his mother's words, Upamanyu, the son of Vitamanyu, asked— "Mother! "Who is this Virupaksha whom you are asking me to worship and serve?"
Then, Dharmashila began to narrate this righteous tale to her son: "My son, listen; let me tell you who this Virupaksha is. In ancient times, there was a mighty king of the Asuras named Shridama. He subjugated the entire world and seized control over Lakshmi (prosperity). That wicked soul stripped the three worlds of their splendor and radiance. Subsequently, the mighty Asura’s intentions grew even more malevolent, and he desired to snatch away the 'Shrivatsa' mark that adorned the chest of Lord Vasudeva.
Aware of this evil desire, Lord Janardana (Vishnu) contemplated a way to slay the Asura and approached Lord Maheshwara (Shiva). At that time, the imperishable Shiva, embodying the essence of Yoga, was seated upon the smooth surface of a high Himalayan peak. Upon arriving there, the thousand-headed and omnipotent Lord of the Universe, Vishnu, began to worship Lord Shiva—who resides within his own soul—chanting the name of that Unmanifest Supreme Brahman known to the great yogis. For more than a thousand years, Vishnu performed severe penance, standing motionless on the big toe of a single foot.
Lord Mahadeva was immensely pleased by this rigorous penance and bestowed upon Vishnu the divine 'Sudarshan Chakra'—a supreme weapon radiating brilliant, tangible splendor. Handing over this terrifying weapon—resembling the 'Wheel of Time' that strikes fear into all living beings—to Vishnu, the God of Gods, Shiva said:
'O Lord of Gods! This weapon, named Sudarshan, moves with incredible speed and is capable of destroying all other weapons in the world. It comprises twelve spokes, six naves, and two *yugas* (cycles). To protect the virtuous and the righteous, its spokes embody the Devas, the twelve months, the zodiac signs, the six seasons, Agni, Soma, Mitra, Varuna, Indra, Vishvedevas, and Prajapati...'" Lord Dhanvantari, the practice of penance, and the twelve months from Chaitra to Phalguna are all established within it.
"O Lord! Accept this supreme weapon and destroy the enemies of the gods without fear. I had held this infallible weapon—worshipped by the King of the Asuras—within my own eyes through the power of my penance." Upon hearing Shiva say this, Vishnu asked, "O Shambhu! How can I be certain whether this weapon is truly infallible (never failing) or merely ordinary? O Lord! If this *Chakra* of yours is indeed infallible and can move anywhere without obstruction, then to test it, I shall hurl it at you; please accept it."
Hearing Vishnu's words, Shiva—who wields the Pinaka bow—calmly replied, "If that is the case, then launch it at me without hesitation."
As soon as Mahesh said this, Vishnu hurled the Sudarshan Chakra swiftly towards Shiva to test its power and radiance. Released from Vishnu's hand, the *Chakra* sped towards Shiva and sliced him into three parts: Vishvesha, Yajnesha, and Yajnayajaka.
Seeing Lord Shiva severed into three pieces, the mighty-armed Vishnu was alarmed; filled with hesitation and remorse, he immediately bowed down at Shiva's feet. Seeing Sri Vishnu (Damodara) prostrate at his feet, the benevolent Shiva was pleased and repeatedly said, "Rise! O mighty-armed one, rise!"
"O mighty-armed one! The edge of the *Chakra* has severed only my physical form (the outer body); it has caused no injury to my true essence or soul, which can never be cut or burned. O Keshava! May these three parts of me, created by the *Chakra*, prove to be the source of great merit..."
