एक छोटे से कस्बे में बारह वर्षीय अर्जुन रहता था। उसकी आँखों में बड़े-बड़े सपने थे। वह पढ़-लिखकर अधिकारी बनना चाहता था ताकि अपने गाँव की तस्वीर बदल सके। लेकिन गरीबी ने उसके सपनों को जकड़ रखा था।
एक दिन उसी रास्ते से उसके पुराने स्कूल के शिक्षक दयाशंकर जी गुज़रे। उन्होंने अर्जुन को कारखाने में काम करते देखा तो उनकी आँखें भर आईं। उन्होंने मालिक से बात की और अर्जुन से पूछा, "बेटा, तुम्हें यहाँ देखकर दुख हो रहा है। तुम तो पढ़ाई में सबसे आगे थे।"
अर्जुन ने सिर झुकाकर कहा, "गुरुजी, पेट की भूख किताबों से नहीं मिटती। अगर मैं काम नहीं करूँगा तो घर कैसे चलेगा?"
शिक्षक ने उसकी बात सुनी, लेकिन हार नहीं मानी। उन्होंने गाँव के कुछ लोगों और समाजसेवियों से मिलकर अर्जुन की पढ़ाई और परिवार की मदद का इंतज़ाम किया। कई लोगों ने पहले मना कर दिया। कुछ ने कहा, "एक बच्चे से क्या फर्क पड़ जाएगा?"
तब दयाशंकर जी ने मुस्कुराकर कहा, "फर्क एक बच्चे से नहीं, एक निर्णय से पड़ता है। अगर आज हमने इसे कारखाने से निकालकर स्कूल पहुँचा दिया, तो कल यह न जाने कितनों की जिंदगी बदल देगा।"
कुछ ही दिनों में अर्जुन फिर से स्कूल लौट आया। उसने दिन-रात मेहनत की। वर्षों बाद वही अर्जुन कठिन परीक्षाएँ पास कर प्रशासनिक अधिकारी बन गया।
पहली नियुक्ति मिलते ही उसने अपने जिले में बाल मजदूरी के खिलाफ विशेष अभियान शुरू कराया। जिन कारखानों में कभी बच्चे काम करते थे, वहाँ अब कानून का पालन होने लगा। कई गरीब बच्चों को छात्रवृत्ति मिली और सैकड़ों बच्चे फिर से स्कूल पहुँच गए।
एक समारोह में अर्जुन ने कहा, "जब बच्चे कारखानों में मिलते हैं और स्कूल खाली दिखाई देते हैं, तब किसी भी देश की तरक्की अधूरी रह जाती है। असली विकास ऊँची इमारतों से नहीं, पढ़े-लिखे बच्चों से होता है।"
पूरा सभागार तालियों से गूँज उठा। दयाशंकर जी की आँखों में गर्व के आँसू थे। उन्हें महसूस हुआ कि उन्होंने केवल एक बच्चे को नहीं, बल्कि एक पूरे समाज के भविष्य को बचाया है।
शिक्षा ही वह शक्ति है जो गरीबी की जंजीरों को तोड़ सकती है। इसलिए बच्चों के हाथों में औज़ार नहीं, किताबें होनी चाहिए। जिस देश के विद्यालय आबाद होते हैं, उसी देश का भविष्य उज्ज्वल होता है।

Arjun, a twelve-year-old boy, lived in a small town. He harbored big dreams; he wanted to study hard and become an officer so he could transform his village. However, poverty held his dreams in a tight grip.His father was chronically ill, leaving the burden of the household on his mother's shoulders. Out of necessity, Arjun dropped out of schoo
l and began working at a nearby firecracker factory. He would leave home before sunrise and return late in the evening, exhausted. Instead of books, his hands bore traces of gunpowder dust and blisters.
One day, Dayashankar-ji, a teacher from his former school, happened to pass by that way. Seeing Arjun working in the factory brought tears to his eyes. He spoke to the owner and asked Arjun, "Son, it pains me to see you here. You were always at the top of your class."
With his head bowed, Arjun replied, "Teacher, books cannot satisfy the hunger in one's belly. If I don't work, how will the household survive?"
The teacher listened but refused to give up. He rallied some villagers and social workers to arrange support for Arjun's education and his family's needs. Many initially refused; some even asked, "What difference will one child make?"
Dayashankar-ji smiled and said, "It is not the child that makes the difference, but the decision we take. If we get him out of the factory and into school today, who knows how many lives he might transform in the future?"
Within a few days, Arjun returned to school. He worked hard day and night. Years later, he cleared rigorous examinations and became an administrative officer.
Upon receiving his first posting, he launched a special campaign against child labor in his district. Factories where children once toiled began to comply with the law. Many underprivileged children received scholarships, and hundreds returned to school. Speaking at a ceremony, Arjun said, "When children are found in factories while schools stand empty, a nation's progress remains incomplete. True development stems not from towering buildings, but from educated children."
The entire auditorium resounded with applause. Tears of pride welled up in Dayashankar-ji's eyes; he realized that he had saved not just a single child, but the future of an entire society.
Education is the force capable of shattering the chains of poverty. Therefore, children should hold books in their hands, not tools. A nation's future is bright only when its schools are filled with students.
