ब्रज की पावन भूमि पर भक्ति का एक ऐसा स्वरूप देखने को मिलता है जहाँ भगवान केवल 'ईश्वर' नहीं, बल्कि घर के एक लाड़ले 'लाला' बन जाते हैं। इस कथा में बाबा और उनके नन्हे लाला (ठाकुर जी का बाल स्वरूप) के मध्य चल रहे अलौकिक खेल का वर्णन है।
रात भर बाबा अपने लाला को पीठ पर बिठाकर 'घोड़ा-घोड़ा' बनकर घुमाते रहे। लाला की प्रसन्नता ही बाबा का परम संतोष था। जब भोर के तीन बजने को आए—वह समय जब अमूमन बाबा अपनी नित्य क्रिया और पूजा के लिए जागते थे—तब लाला ने बाबा के कान में धीरे से कहा:
"बाबा! अब हम बहुत थक गए हैं। अब हमें विश्राम करना है और हमारे इस प्यारे घोड़े (बाबा) को भी तो आराम चाहिए।"
लाला की भोली बातों को सुनकर बाबा का हृदय करुणा और वात्सल्य से भर आया। बाबा ने बड़े लाड़ से लाला को अपनी पीठ से उतारा, शीतल जल से उनके नन्हे हाथ-पांव पोंछे और उन्हें सुखद शय्या पर पौढ़ा (सुला) दिया।
के 'अचला' (कंधे पर रखे जाने वाले वस्त्र) को लगाम समझकर कसकर पकड़ लिया था। सोते समय भी लाला की छोटी सी मुट्ठी ने उस वस्त्र को नहीं छोड़ा था। अब बाबा के सामने एक बड़ी दुविधा थी:
यदि वे बलपूर्वक अचला छुड़ाते हैं, तो लाला की कच्ची नींद टूट जाएगी और लाला जाग जाएगा।
यदि वे अचला नहीं छोड़ते, तो बिना स्नान किए और बिना शुद्ध हुए अपने नित्य नियम कैसे पूरे करेंगे?
बाबा कुछ क्षणों के लिए सोच में पड़ गए। फिर उनके भीतर एक ज्ञान का प्रकाश पुंज जागा। उन्होंने स्वयं से प्रश्न किया—"ये नियम, ये संयम, ये शुद्धि... ये सब आखिर किसके लिए हैं?"
उनका हृदय बोल उठा कि इन समस्त जप, तप और नियमों का एकमात्र लक्ष्य तो 'लाला' (परमात्मा) को पाना ही है। जब स्वयं पूर्ण ब्रह्म, साक्षात् लाला ने ही उनका पल्लू पकड़ रखा है, तो फिर बाहरी शुद्धि का क्या अर्थ?
"अरे! जिसके स्पर्श मात्र से पतित से पतित जीव पावन हो जाता है, जो स्वयं शुद्धि का स्रोत है, जब उसने मुझे पकड़ रखा है तो मैं अशुद्ध कैसे हो सकता हूँ?"
बाबा की आँखों से प्रेमाश्रुओं की धारा बह निकली। उन्होंने निर्णय लिया कि आज वे कोई पारंपरिक स्नान-ध्यान नहीं करेंगे। आज उनके नियम लाला की सेवा में 'घोड़ा' बने-बने ही पूरे होंगे।
यह कथा सिखाती है कि भगवान को कर्मकांड की जटिलताओं से अधिक भक्त का प्रेम प्रिय है। जहाँ प्रेम की पराकाष्ठा होती है, वहाँ नियम स्वयं मर्यादा बनकर झुक जाते हैं।

On the sacred soil of Braj, one witnesses a form of devotion where the Lord is not merely the 'Supreme Being' but becomes a cherished 'Lala'—a beloved child of the household. This story recounts the divine play unfolding between Baba and his little Lala (the child form of Thakur Ji).
All night long, Baba carried Lala on his back, playing the role of a horse to entertain him. Lala’s happiness was Baba’s ultimate contentment. As the hour approached three in the morning—the time when Baba usually rose for his daily ablutions and prayers—Lala whispered softly into Baba’s ear:
"Baba! I am very tired now. I need to rest, and my dear horse (Baba) needs rest too."
Hearing Lala’s innocent words, Baba’s heart overflowed with compassion and parental affection. With great tenderness, Baba lifted Lala down from his back, wiped his tiny hands and feet with cool water, and laid him gently upon a comfortable bed.
Just as Lala drifted into a deep slumber, Baba realized that dawn had broken. It was time for his daily rituals, bath, and prayers. Yet, as he attempted to rise, he encountered an unexpected obstacle.
In the midst of their play, Lala had mistaken Baba’s *achala* (the cloth draped over his shoulder) for a horse's rein and had gripped it tightly. Even in sleep, Lala’s tiny fist had not let go of the cloth. Baba now faced a difficult dilemma:
If he forcibly freed the *achala*, Lala’s light sleep would be broken, and the child would wake up.
If he did not free the *achala*, how could he perform his daily rituals without bathing or purifying himself?
Baba pondered the situation for a few moments. Then, a radiant light of wisdom dawned within him. He asked himself, "These rules, this restraint, this ritual purity... what are they all for, after all?"
His heart spoke up, declaring that the sole purpose of all such chanting, penance, and observances is simply to attain 'Lala' (the Supreme Being). When the Supreme Absolute—Lala Himself—is holding onto the hem of his garment, what meaning does external purity hold?
"Oh! When He—whose mere touch sanctifies even the most fallen of souls and who is the very source of purity—is holding onto me, how could I possibly be impure?"
A stream of tears born of love flowed from Baba's eyes. He resolved that, for today, he would not perform any traditional ritual bathing or meditation. Today, his spiritual observances would be fulfilled simply by playing the role of a 'horse' in the service of Lala.
This story teaches that God values a devotee's love far more than the complexities of ritualistic practices. Where love reaches its zenith, rules themselves bow down, transforming into mere boundaries of propriety.
