रघुवंश के इतिहास में यदि किसी प्रेम कथा ने सबसे अधिक लोगों के हृदय को स्पर्श किया है, तो वह है महाराज रघु के पुत्र राजा अज और उनकी पत्नी इन्दुमती की कथा। जहाँ महाराज रघु अपने अद्भुत पराक्रम और दानशीलता के लिए प्रसिद्ध थे, वहीं राजा अज अपनी न्यायप्रियता, वीरता और पत्नी के प्रति अटूट प्रेम के कारण अमर हो गए। महाकवि कालिदास ने रघुवंशम् में इस प्रसंग का अत्यंत मार्मिक वर्णन किया है।
विदर्भ देश की राजकुमारी इन्दुमती रूप, गुण और शील की प्रतिमूर्ति थीं। उनके स्वयंवर में अनेक राज्यों के पराक्रमी राजा और राजकुमार उपस्थित हुए। हाथों में वरमाला लिए जब इन्दुमती राजाओं की पंक्तियों के बीच से आगे बढ़ रही थीं, तब उनका सौंदर्य ऐसा प्रतीत होता था मानो अंधेरी रात में चलती हुई एक उज्ज्वल मशाल हो। जिस राजा को वे पार कर जातीं, उसके मन की आशा भी उसी क्षण बुझ जाती।
जब उनकी दृष्टि राजकुमार अज पर पड़ी, तो उनके तेज, विनम्रता और दिव्य व्यक्तित्व ने इन्दुमती का हृदय जीत लिया। उन्होंने बिना किसी संकोच के अज के गले में वरमाला डाल दी और उन्हें अपना जीवनसाथी स्वीकार कर लिया।
लेकिन यह दृश्य अनेक राजाओं को सहन नहीं हुआ। ईर्ष्या से भरकर उन्होंने लौटते समय राजा अज पर एक साथ आक्रमण कर दिया। युवा अज ने अकेले ही अपने अद्भुत पराक्रम से सभी शत्रुओं को परास्त कर दिया और विजयी होकर इन्दुमती के साथ अयोध्या लौटे।
समय बीतता गया। दोनों का वैवाहिक जीवन प्रेम, सम्मान और सुख से भर गया। शीघ्र ही उनके यहाँ एक तेजस्वी पुत्र का जन्म हुआ, जिसका नाम दशरथ रखा गया।
किन्तु नियति को कुछ और ही स्वीकार था।
एक दिन राजा अज और रानी इन्दुमती राजउद्यान में विहार कर रहे थे। उसी समय देवर्षि नारद आकाश मार्ग से अपनी वीणा बजाते हुए जा रहे थे। उनकी वीणा पर सजी दिव्य पुष्पमाला अचानक वायु के झोंके से नीचे गिर पड़ी और सीधे इन्दुमती के वक्ष पर आ लगी।
वह कोई साधारण माला नहीं थी। उसके स्पर्श होते ही इन्दुमती ने तत्काल अपने प्राण त्याग दिए। वास्तव में वे एक दिव्य अप्सरा थीं, जिन्हें पूर्व जन्म के श्राप के कारण पृथ्वी पर जन्म लेना पड़ा था। उस दिव्य माला के स्पर्श से उनका श्राप समाप्त हुआ और वे अपने वास्तविक स्वरूप में स्वर्ग लौट गईं।
अपनी प्रिय पत्नी को इस प्रकार अचानक खो देना राजा अज के लिए असहनीय था। वे इन्दुमती के निर्जीव शरीर को गोद में लेकर करुण स्वर में विलाप करने लगे—
"हे प्रिये! ये कोमल पुष्प तुम्हारे प्राण कैसे हर सकते हैं? यदि विधाता को तुम्हें मुझसे दूर करना ही था, तो मेरे प्राण भी साथ क्यों नहीं ले गया?"
उनका यह विलाप इतना मार्मिक था कि मानो स्वयं प्रकृति भी शोक में डूब गई हो।
इन्दुमती के वियोग ने राजा अज के जीवन से सारी प्रसन्नता छीन ली। उनका मन राजकार्य से भी विरक्त हो गया। अंततः उन्होंने अपने पुत्र दशरथ का राज्याभिषेक कर दिया और स्वयं सरयू तट पर कठोर उपवास और तप करते हुए अपने प्राण त्याग दिए। कहा जाता है कि स्वर्गलोक में उनका पुनर्मिलन अपनी प्रिय इन्दुमती से हुआ।यह कथा केवल प्रेम-विरह की कहानी नहीं,
बल्कि रघुवंश की संवेदनशीलता का भी अद्भुत उदाहरण है। यह बताती है कि रघुकुल के राजा केवल रणभूमि के विजेता ही नहीं थे, बल्कि प्रेम, करुणा और समर्पण की जीवंत प्रतिमूर्ति भी थे।
इसी गौरवशाली वंश में आगे चलकर महाराजा दशरथ का जन्म हुआ और फिर अवतरित हुए मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम भगवान श्रीराम, जिन्होंने रघुकुल की मर्यादा और आदर्शों को समस्त संसार में अमर कर दिया।

In the history of the Raghuvansha lineage, if there is one love story that has deeply touched the hearts of so many, it is the tale of King Aja—son of the mighty Maharaja Raghu—and his wife, Indumati. While Maharaja Raghu was renowned for his extraordinary valor and generosity, King Aja became immortal through his sense of justice, bravery, and unwavering love for his wife. The great poet Kalidasa has narrated this episode with profound poignancy in his epic, *Raghuvansham*.
Princess Indumati of Vidarbha was the embodiment of beauty, virtue, and grace. Mighty kings and princes from numerous kingdoms had gathered for her *Swayamvara* (the ceremony where a princess chooses her husband). As she walked past the rows of kings, holding the wedding garland (*varmala*), her beauty shone like a radiant torch moving through the darkness of night. The moment she walked past a king, the hope in his heart would instantly be extinguished.
When her gaze fell upon Prince Aja, his radiance, humility, and divine aura captivated her heart. Without a moment's hesitation, she placed the garland around Aja's neck, accepting him as her life partner.
However, many of the kings could not bear this sight. Seething with jealousy, they launched a collective attack on King Aja as he was departing. Single-handedly, the young Aja vanquished all his foes with his extraordinary valor and returned triumphantly to Ayodhya with Indumati.
Time passed, and their married life was filled with love, mutual respect, and happiness. Soon, they were blessed with a radiant son, who was named Dasharatha.
But destiny had other plans.
One day, King Aja and Queen Indumati were strolling through the royal gardens. At that moment, the celestial sage Narada was traversing the sky, playing his *Veena*. A divine garland of flowers adorning his instrument was suddenly dislodged by a gust of wind; it fell from the heavens and struck Indumati directly upon her chest.It was no ordinary garland. The moment she was touched by it, Indumati instantly breathed her last. In reality, she was a celestial *Apsara* who had been compelled to take birth on Earth due to a curse from a past life. The touch of that divine garland lifted the curse, and she returned to heaven in her true form.Losing his beloved wife so suddenly was unbearable for King Aja. Holding Indumati’s lifeless body in his lap, he began to lament in a voice filled with anguish:"Oh, my beloved! How could these delicate flowers take your life? If the Creator was determined to tear you away from me, why did He not take my life along with yours?"His lament was so heart-rending that it seemed as though Nature itself was plunged into mourning.
Separation from Indumati drained all joy from King Aja’s life. He lost interest even in the affairs of the kingdom. Eventually, he crowned his son Dasharatha as king and, retiring to the banks of the Sarayu River, gave up his life while observing rigorous fasting and penance. It is said that he was reunited with his beloved Indumati in the celestial realm.This tale is not merely a story of love and separation; it is also a magnificent example of the sensitivity inherent in the *Raghuvansha* (the lineage of Raghu). It illustrates that the kings of the *Raghukul* were not only conquerors on the battlefield but also living embodiments of love, compassion, and devotion.It was in this glorious lineage that Maharaja Dasharatha was later born, followed by the incarnation of *Maryada Purushottam* Lord Shri Ram, who immortalized the dignity and ideals of the *Raghukul* across the entire world.
