देवताओं और दैत्यों के बीच होने वाले युद्धों में देवताओं को बार-बार विजय प्राप्त होती थी, क्योंकि समुद्र मंथन से प्राप्त अमृत के कारण वे पुनः शक्ति प्राप्त कर लेते थे। दूसरी ओर, युद्ध में मारे गए दैत्यों को ऐसा कोई वरदान प्राप्त नहीं था।
अपने शिष्यों को बार-बार नष्ट होते देखकर शुक्राचार्य ने संकल्प लिया कि वे ऐसी दिव्य विद्या प्राप्त करेंगे, जिससे मृत योद्धाओं को भी पुनर्जीवित किया जा सके। वे जानते थे कि मृत-संजीवनी विद्या केवल भगवान शिव के पास है।
🔥 हजार वर्षों की घोर साधना
महादेव को प्रसन्न करने के लिए शुक्राचार्य हिमालय की निर्जन पर्वतमालाओं में चले गए और ऐसी तपस्या आरंभ की, जिसकी कल्पना भी सामान्य मनुष्य नहीं कर सकता।
उन्होंने एक विशाल वृक्ष की शाखा से अपने पैरों के सहारे उल्टा लटककर तप करना शुरू किया।
उन्होंने अन्न, जल और सभी सांसारिक सुखों का पूर्ण त्याग कर दिया। केवल नीचे जलती हुई सूखी लकड़ियों और पत्तों से उठने वाले धुएँ को ही अपना आधार बनाया।
इसी कठिन अवस्था में वे निरंतर एक हजार वर्षों तक तप में लीन रहे। समय के साथ उनका शरीर अत्यंत दुर्बल हो गया, किंतु उनका संकल्प और भगवान शिव के प्रति विश्वास तनिक भी नहीं डिगा।
⚡ देवताओं की चिंता
शुक्राचार्य की तपस्या देखकर देवराज इन्द्र चिंतित हो उठे। उन्हें भय हुआ कि यदि यह साधना सफल हो गई, तो दैत्य अत्यंत शक्तिशाली हो जाएँगे।
तपस्या भंग करने के उद्देश्य से इन्द्र ने अपनी पुत्री जयंती को भेजा। अनेक प्रयासों के बाद भी शुक्राचार्य का ध्यान विचलित नहीं हुआ। उनका मन केवल भगवान शिव के चरणों में स्थिर रहा।
🕉️ महादेव का वरदान
इसके साथ ही उन्हें महान सम्मान प्रदान करते हुए ग्रहों में विशिष्ट स्थान मिला। वे शुक्र ग्रह के अधिष्ठाता माने गए, जिन्हें ज्योतिष में ऐश्वर्य, सौंदर्य, वैभव, कला और समृद्धि का कारक माना जाता है।

🌿 The Purpose of the Penance
In the wars between the *Devas* (gods) and the *Daityas*, the *Devas* would repeatedly emerge victorious because they could regain their strength thanks to the *Amrit* (nectar of immortality) obtained from the *Samudra Manthan* (Churning of the Ocean). Conversely, the *Daityas* who fell in battle possessed no such boon.
Witnessing the repeated destruction of his disciples, Shukracharya resolved to acquire a divine science—the *Mrit-Sanjivani Vidya*—capable of reviving even fallen warriors. He knew that this knowledge was possessed solely by Lord Shiva.
🔥 A Thousand Years of Intense Penance
To propitiate Mahadev, Shukracharya retreated to the desolate mountain ranges of the Himalayas and commenced a penance beyond the imagination of ordinary mortals.
He began his penance by hanging upside down from the branch of a massive tree, supporting himself by his feet.
He completely renounced food, water, and all worldly comforts. His only sustenance was the smoke rising from the dry wood and leaves burning beneath him.
In this grueling state, he remained immersed in penance for a full thousand years. Over time, his body became extremely frail, yet his resolve and his faith in Lord Shiva never wavered in the slightest.
⚡ The Anxiety of the Gods
Witnessing Shukracharya's penance, Indra, the King of the Gods, grew anxious. He feared that if this spiritual practice succeeded, the *Daityas* would become immensely powerful.
With the aim of disrupting the penance, Indra sent his daughter, Jayanti. Despite numerous attempts, Shukracharya’s concentration remained unbroken; his mind stayed steadfastly fixed upon the lotus feet of Lord Shiva. 🕉️ Mahadev's Boon
Ultimately, pleased by his extraordinary penance and unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before him.
Mahadev bestowed upon him the rare *Mrit-Sanjeevani Vidya* (the knowledge of reviving the dead), enabling him to bring fallen warriors back to life.
Furthermore, he was accorded great honor and a distinguished position among the celestial bodies; he became the presiding deity of the planet Venus (*Shukra*), which in astrology signifies opulence, beauty, grandeur, art, and prosperity.
