सरस्वती विद्या स्कूल में आठवीं कक्षा के दो विद्यार्थी पढ़ते थे—शैतान सिंह और अभिलाषा। दोनों एक ही कक्षा में थे, लेकिन उनके स्वभाव बिल्कुल अलग थे।
शैतान सिंह बहुत बुद्धिमान था, लेकिन पढ़ाई को गंभीरता से नहीं लेता था। वह अक्सर दोस्तों के साथ शरारत करता, होमवर्क अधूरा छोड़ देता और सोचता, "परीक्षा से पहले दो-चार दिन पढ़ लूंगा, सब याद हो जाएगा।"
वहीं दूसरी ओर अभिलाषा साधारण परिवार की बेटी थी। उसके घर की आर्थिक स्थिति अच्छी नहीं थी। स्कूल से लौटने के बाद वह अपनी माँ के साथ घर के कामों में हाथ बंटाती, फिर भी रोज़ समय निकालकर मन लगाकर पढ़ाई करती। वह हमेशा कहती, "सफलता किस्मत से नहीं, रोज़ की मेहनत से मिलती है।"
कुछ ही दिनों बाद विद्यालय में विज्ञान प्रदर्शनी और वार्षिक परीक्षा की घोषणा हुई। पूरे स्कूल में उत्साह का माहौल था।
शैतान सिंह ने सोचा, "अभी तो बहुत समय है, बाद में तैयारी कर लूँगा।" लेकिन वह खेल-कूद और मोबाइल में ही समय बिताता रहा।
दूसरी ओर अभिलाषा ने एक छोटी-सी डायरी बनाई। उसमें उसने हर दिन का लक्ष्य लिखा। वह रोज़ थोड़ा-थोड़ा पढ़ती, कठिन विषयों को अपने शिक्षकों से समझती और जो समझ में आ जाता, उसे अपने दोस्तों को भी सिखाती।
धीरे-धीरे प्रदर्शनी का दिन आ गया। अभिलाषा ने अपने साथियों के साथ मिलकर वर्षा जल संरक्षण का सुंदर मॉडल तैयार किया। शिक्षकों और अतिथियों ने उसकी बहुत प्रशंसा की।
उधर शैतान सिंह ने अंतिम समय में जल्दी-जल्दी मॉडल बनाने की कोशिश की, लेकिन तैयारी अधूरी होने के कारण उसका मॉडल सही ढंग से काम नहीं कर पाया। उसे बहुत निराशा हुई।
अब वार्षिक परीक्षा भी शुरू हो गई। अभिलाषा पूरे आत्मविश्वास के साथ परीक्षा देती रही, जबकि शैतान सिंह को कई प्रश्नों के उत्तर याद ही नहीं आए। परीक्षा समाप्त होने के बाद उसे अपनी गलती का एहसास हुआ।
कुछ सप्ताह बाद परिणाम घोषित हुआ। अभिलाषा पूरे विद्यालय में प्रथम आई। प्रधानाचार्य ने मंच पर उसे सम्मानित करते हुए कहा, "अभिलाषा की सफलता हमें सिखाती है कि कठिन परिस्थितियाँ कभी भी मेहनती इंसान का रास्ता नहीं रोक सकतीं।"
शैतान सिंह के अंक अपेक्षा से बहुत कम आए। वह उदास होकर एक कोने में बैठा था। तभी अभिलाषा उसके पास आई और मुस्कुराकर बोली, "हार अंत नहीं होती। अगर आज से मेहनत शुरू कर दो, तो अगली बार सफलता तुम्हारी होगी।"
उस दिन शैतान सिंह ने मन ही मन संकल्प लिया कि अब वह समय का सदुपयोग करेगा। उसने रोज़ पढ़ाई शुरू की, शिक्षकों का सम्मान किया, शरारतें कम कर दीं और अनुशासन को अपनी आदत बना लिया।अगले वर्ष जब परीक्षा का परिणाम आया, तो इस बार शैतान सिंह भी कक्षा के श्रेष्ठ विद्या
र्थियों में शामिल था। मंच पर पुरस्कार लेते समय उसने कहा, "मैंने सीखा है कि प्रतिभा तभी चमकती है, जब उसके साथ मेहनत और अनुशासन जुड़ जाए।"
पूरा विद्यालय तालियों से गूँज उठा। उस दिन बच्चों ने समझ लिया कि सफलता किसी एक दिन की मेहनत से नहीं, बल्कि रोज़ किए गए छोटे-छोटे प्रयासों से मिलती है।

Two eighth-grade students, Shaitan Singh and Abhilasha, studied at Saraswati Vidya School. Although they were classmates, their natures were poles apart.
Shaitan Singh was very intelligent but did not take his studies seriously. He often played pranks with friends and left his homework incomplete, thinking, "I’ll study for a few days before the exam, and I’ll remember everything."
On the other hand, Abhilasha came from an ordinary family with limited financial means. After returning from school, she would help her mother with household chores, yet she always made time to study diligently. She often said, "Success comes not from luck, but from daily hard work."
A few days later, the school announced a science exhibition and the annual examinations. The entire school was buzzing with excitement.
Shaitan Singh thought, "There is plenty of time; I’ll prepare later." However, he continued to spend his time playing sports and using his mobile phone.
Meanwhile, Abhilasha created a small diary in which she noted down her daily goals. She studied a little every day, sought her teachers' help to understand difficult subjects, and taught what she had learned to her friends.
Gradually, the day of the exhibition arrived. Abhilasha, along with her classmates, prepared a beautiful model demonstrating rainwater harvesting. Teachers and guests praised her work highly.
In contrast, Shaitan Singh tried to hastily assemble a model at the last minute; however, due to inadequate preparation, his model failed to function correctly. He was deeply disappointed.
Then, the annual examinations began. Abhilasha took the exams with great confidence, whereas Shaitan Singh could not recall the answers to many questions. After the exams concluded, he realized his mistake.
A few weeks later, the results were declared. Abhilasha topped the entire school. While honoring her on stage, the Principal remarked, "Abhilasha’s success teaches us that difficult circumstances can never block the path of a hardworking person." Shaitan Singh’s exam results were far below expectations. He sat dejectedly in a corner. Just then, Abhilasha approached him and said with a smile, "Defeat is not the end. If you start working hard today, success will be yours next time."
That day, Shaitan Singh resolved to make the best use of his time. He began studying regularly, respected his teachers, curbed his mischievous behavior, and made discipline a habit.
When the exam results were announced the following year, Shaitan Singh was among the class's top students. While receiving his award on stage, he said, "I have learned that talent shines only when combined with hard work and discipline."
The entire school resounded with applause. That day, the students realized that success is not achieved through a single day's effort, but through small, consistent efforts made every day.
