जब परीक्षित जी को भागवत कथा सुनते सुनते 6 दिन बीत गए तब शुकदेव जी ने देखा कि परीक्षित के मन में अभी भी मृत्यु का भय हैं फिर उनकी इस दशा को देखते हुए शुकदेव जी ने राजा परीक्षित को एक कथा सुनाई , कथा के अनुसार एक राजा एक बार जंगल में शिकार करने गए और जंगल में शिकार करते वक्त राजा अपना रास्ता भटक गया। इधर उधर भटकने के बाद उसे एक छोटी सी झोपड़ी नज़र आयी। जब राजा उसके अंदर गया तो उसने देखा वहाँ पर एक बहेलिया रहता है जो कि लम्बे समय से बीमार चल रहा था।
जब राजा झोपड़ी में गया तो उसने देखा कि उस बीमार बहेलिया ने उसी झोपड़ी में एक तरफ शौच करने का स्थान बना रखा था तो खाने पीने के लिए जानवरों का मांस छत से टांग रखा था । उस छोटी सी झोपड़ी में ये सब चीजों कि वजह से वह झोपड़ी दुर्गन्ध से भरी हुई थी। लेकिन राजा के पास कोई दूसरा रास्ता न होने कि वजह से राजा ने उस बहेलिया से उस झोपड़ी में रुकने के लिए निवेदन किया।
इस बात पर बहेलिया बोला कि " मैं हमेशा से भटके हुए राहगीरों को अपनी इस झोपड़ी में पनाह देता हूँ। लेकिन जब दूसरे दिन कि सुबह होती है तो कोई यहाँ से जाना नहीं चाहता और यहीं रुकने कि ज़िद करने लगता है। अब मैं बार बार इस झंझट में नहीं पड़ना चाहता तो मैं आपको अपनी इस झोपड़ी मे रुकने नहीं दे सकता। यह सुनकर राजा थोड़े अचंभित हुए और फिर बोले कि मैं आपको वचन देता हूँ कि मैं ऐसा नहीं करूँगा और सुबह होते ही अपने घर के लिए चला जाऊंगा। तो राजा कि इस बात पर बीमार बहेलिया राजा पर भरोसा कर उसको रुकने के लिए जगह दे देता है। अब राजा रात को वहीं विश्राम करने के लिए लेटता है और उस झोपड़ी की गंध उसके अंदर जा रही थी और सुबह होते होते राजा के अंदर उस गंध का ऐसा नशा चढ़ गया कि वो भी अपना वचन भूल दूसरे लोगों की भाँति वहीं पर रुकने कि बात करने लगा और इस बात को लेकर राजा ने उस बीमार बहेलिया से कलह कर लिया।
फिर शुकदेव राजा परीक्षित से पूछते है कि क्या उस राजा ने यह सही किया तो शुकदेव के इस प्रश्न का जवाब देते हुए राजा परीक्षित ने कहा कि नहीं उसने बिल्कुल गलत किया और वो मूर्ख राजा था जो अपना इतना अच्छा राज पाठ छोड़कर और अपना वचन तोड़ कर उस गन्दी झोपड़ी में रहना चाहता था। क्या आप बता सकते हो कौन था वो राजा ?
तब शुकदेव जी ने कहा कि वह राजा कोई और नहीं स्वयं तुम ही हो राजन। जो कि इस मल मूत्र से भरे झोपड़ी यानी इस शरीर में रहना चाहते हो जब के तुम्हारी आत्मा का इस शरीर में रहने का समय समाप्त हो गया है। तब भी तुम उसके ही शोक में पड़े हुए हो। और फिर शुकदेव जी पूछते है कि क्या अब भी मरने का शोक करना सही है। उसके बाद राजा परीक्षित ने अपने मन से मौत का डर निकलने का फैसला किया और अपने अंतिम समय तक पूरे भक्ति भाव से कथा श्रवण की।

After six days of listening to the *Bhagavat Katha*, Shukadeva observed that King Parikshit still harbored a fear of death. Noting this state of mind, Shukadeva narrated a story to the King. According to the tale, a king once went hunting in a forest and lost his way. After wandering about, he spotted a small hut. Upon entering, he discovered a fowler living there who had been ailing for a long time.
Inside the hut, the King saw that the sick fowler had designated a corner for relieving himself, while animal meat intended for consumption hung from the ceiling. The presence of these things filled the small hut with a foul stench. However, having no other option, the King requested the fowler's permission to stay there. The fowler replied, "I have always offered shelter to wayward travelers in this hut. However, come morning, no one wants to leave; they insist on staying here. I do not wish to deal with that hassle repeatedly, so I cannot let you stay." Hearing this, the King was surprised but promised, "I give you my word that I will not do such a thing; I shall leave for home as soon as dawn breaks." Trusting the King's word, the ailing fowler allowed him to stay. The King lay down to rest for the night, but the foul odor of the hut began to permeate his senses. By morning, he was so intoxicated by that stench that, forgetting his promise, he too insisted on staying there just like the others—even quarreling with the sick fowler over the matter.
Shukdev then asked King Parikshit if the King had acted rightly. Parikshit replied that he had acted wrongly; he was a foolish king who wished to abandon his magnificent kingdom and break his vow just to live in that filthy hut. "Can you tell me who that king was?"
Shukdev revealed, "O King, that king is none other than you—you, who wish to remain in this hut filled with filth and excrement (this body), even though the time for your soul to inhabit it has ended. Yet, you remain consumed by grief over it." Shukdev then asked if it was truly right to mourn death. Consequently, King Parikshit resolved to cast aside the fear of death from his mind and listened to the sacred narrative with complete devotion until his final moments.
