इस कथा की सबसे बड़ी बात ब्रह्मा जी ने भी युद्ध किया :

700 वर्षों तक देवताओं और दैत्यों के बीच यह भयानक युद्ध चलता रहा। एक दिन, 18 भुजाओं वाले भगवान शंकर अपनी संध्या वंदना करने लगे। उन्होंने पवित्र सरस्वती नदी में स्नान किया, सूर्य देव की पूजा-अर्चना की और फिर वे पूरी तरह मस्त होकर अलौकिक नृत्य करने लगे। महादेव को इस तरह आनंद में झूमते देख, उनके सभी गण और देवता भी उत्साह से नाचने लगे।

​नृत्य का आनंद लेने के बाद, शंकर जी का ध्यान पुनः युद्ध की ओर गया। उनकी असीम शक्ति के प्रभाव से सभी देवता अत्यंत बलवान हो गए और उन्होंने दैत्यों की सेना को खदेड़ना शुरू कर दिया।

अपनी सेना को हारता देख दैत्यराज अंधक समझ गया कि महादेव को सीधे युद्ध में हराना नामुमकिन है। उसने अपने भाई सुन्द को बुलाया और कहा— "वीर सुन्द! तू मेरा भाई है। मेरे दिल में कमल नयनी पार्वती बस गई हैं। चल, हम एक चाल चलते हैं। मैं शंकर का रूप धर लेता हूँ और तू उनका वाहन नंदी बन जा। इस तरह छल से उनका सुख भोगकर, हम सबको जीत लेंगे।

सुन्द राजी हो गया। एक नंदी बन गया और दूसरा शिव का रूप धरकर, घायल होने का ढोंग रचाते हुए मंदर पर्वत पर पहुँच गए।अंधक निडर होकर महल में घुस गया। कपट से घायल बने नकली शिव को देखकर माता पार्वती का हृदय दया से भर आया। उन्होंने तुरंत अपनी सखियों—जया, विजया और मालिनी से कहा— "देखो,

मेरे स्वामी को दुश्मनों ने कैसा घायल कर दिया है! जल्दी जाओ और पुराना घी, हल्दी, नमक और दही ले आओ, मैं स्वयं इनके घाव भरूंगी।

परन्तु, जैसे ही पार्वती जी उनके समीप आईं, उन्होंने ध्यान दिया कि शिव के साथ रहने वाले उनके दोनों दिव्य बैल (नंदी) वहाँ नहीं हैं। वह तुरंत समझ गईं कि यह कोई मायावी और भयानक दैत्य है।

गिरिराज की पुत्री वहाँ से तुरंत भागीं और अंधक उनके पीछे दौड़ पड़ा। पार्वती जी घर छोड़कर बगीचे में चली गईं, पर वह वहाँ भी आ धमका। अपने तपोबल की रक्षा के लिए माता ने उसे श्राप नहीं दिया, बल्कि  वे एक सफेद आक (मदार) के फूल में सूक्ष्म रूप धरकर अंतर्ध्यान हो गईं। उनकी सखियाँ भी झाड़ियों में अंतर्ध्यान गईं।

जब पार्वती जी कहीं नहीं दिखीं, तो निराश होकर अंधक वापस अपनी सेना में लौट आया।

अंधक के लौटते ही युद्ध फिर से छिड़ गया। भगवान विष्णु अपना सुदर्शन चक्र और कौमोदकी गदा लेकर असुर सेना का संहार करने लगे। उनके बाणों से 5-5, 6-6, 7-7 दैत्य एक साथ कटने लगे, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे सूर्य की धूप से अंधकार छँट जाता है। किसी को गदा से, किसी को चक्र से, तो किसी को तलवार से मार गिराया और कईयों को तो केवल क्रोध दृष्टि से ही भस्म कर दिया।

भगवान विष्णु के वाहन गरुड़ ने अपनी तीखी चोंच और विशाल पंखों की मार से कई दैत्यों के प्राण ले लिए। वहीं, ब्रह्मा जी ने अपने कमंडलु के कमल से सभी देवताओं पर पवित्र जल छिड़का। उस अलौकिक जल के प्रभाव से देवता जवान हाथी से भी अधिक बलवान हो गए और दैत्य इस तरह मरने लगे जैसे वज्र के प्रहार से पर्वत टूटकर बिखर जाते हैं।

ब्रह्मा और विष्णु को संहार करते देख देवराज इंद्र भी अपना वज्र लेकर युद्ध भूमि में कूद पड़े। यह देख दैत्यों का राजा बल, विष्णु और ब्रह्मा को छोड़ इंद्र से लड़ने आ गया।

इंद्र ने अपनी हजार भुजाओं से वज्र घुमाया और कड़ककर बोले— "अरे मूर्ख! अब तेरा अंत निश्चित है!" और वज्र सीधे बल के सिर पर दे मारा। परन्तु, बल के कठोर मस्तक से टकराकर वह वज्र ही हजार टुकड़ों में टूट गया। जब बल क्रोध में इंद्र की तरफ झपटा, तो इंद्र डर के मारे युद्ध क्षेत्र से भाग खड़े हुए।

तभी जम्भ नाम के दैत्य ने इंद्र को ललकारा। निहत्थे और भयभीत इंद्र भगवान विष्णु के पास पहुँचे और बोले— "हे ईश्वर! आप ही मेरे रक्षक हैं। जम्भ मुझे बिना हथियार के देखकर ललकार रहा है, कृपा कर मुझे कोई अस्त्र दीजिए।"

विष्णु जी ने कहा— अब अपना घमंड त्यागो और अग्नि देव की शरण में जाओ, वही तुम्हें अस्त्र देंगे।

इंद्र तुरंत अग्नि देव के पास गए और बोले— "मेरा वज्र दैत्य बल को मारते समय टूट गया। अब जम्भ मुझे ललकार रहा है, मुझे अस्त्र दीजिए।

अग्नि देव प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने अपनी दिव्य शक्ति से एक अत्यंत भयानक अस्त्र बनाकर इंद्र को दिया, जो सैकड़ों घंटियों की ध्वनि से गूंज रहा था। इंद्र उसे लेकर जम्भ को मारने चले, पर जम्भ ने गुस्से में इंद्र के वाहन ऐरावत हाथी पर एक जोरदार मुक्का दे मारा। मुक्के के प्रहार से हाथी का सिर फट गया और वह विशाल पर्वत की तरह धराशायी हो गया। इंद्र ऐरावत से उछलकर मंदर पर्वत से नीचे धरती की ओर गिरने लगे।

यह देख आकाश से सिद्ध और चारण पुकार उठे— "हे इंद्र! धरती पर मत गिरो, रुको।" योगी इंद्र एक पल के लिए हवा में ही रुक गए और बोले— बिना वाहन के मैं युद्ध कैसे लड़ूँगा?

देवताओं और गंधर्वों ने ढांढस बंधाया— "आप चिंता न करें, हम आपके लिए रथ भेज रहे हैं।" विश्वासु आदि गंधर्वों ने सोने का एक विशाल रथ भेजा, जिसमें हरे रंग के दिव्य घोड़े जुते हुए थे।

इंद्र ने कहा— "रथ तो आ गया, पर इसका सारथी नहीं है। मैं अकेला घोड़ों को संभालूँ या युद्ध करूँ?" ગंधर्वों ने असमर्थता जताई कि उनके पास कोई सारथी नहीं है। इतना सुनते ही निराश होकर इंद्र अपनी माला और वस्त्र बिखेरे हुए धरती पर गिर पड़े, जिससे पूरी पृथ्वी जोर से कांपने लगी।

धरती को इस तरह कांपते देख शमीक ऋषि की पत्नी ने घबराकर कहा— "स्वामी! बच्चे को संभालकर जल्दी बाहर ले जाइए।" ऋषि ने पूछा— "ऐसा क्यों?" पत्नी बोली— "ज्योतिषियों का कथन है कि जब भूमि कांपती है, तब जो भी वस्तु बाहर रखी होती है, वह दोगुनी  हो जाती है।

यह सुनकर ब्राह्मण ने बिना किसी शंका के अपने छोटे बच्चे को बाहर धरती पर रख दिया। फिर जैसे ही वह दो गायों को बाहर लाने के लिए अंदर गए, उनकी पत्नी ने उन्हें रोकते हुए कहा— अब समय निकल चुका है, अब आधे हिस्से की हानि होगी।

ब्राह्मण जब जल्दी से बाहर आया, तो उसने देखा कि वहाँ एक जैसे दो बालक लेटे हुए थे। उसने अपनी ज्ञानी पत्नी से पूछा— इस चमत्कार का क्या रहस्य है? इस दूसरे बालक का भविष्य क्या होगा?

पत्नी ने पहले तो बताने से संकोच किया, फिर बोली— "यह बालक बहुत बड़ा और निपुण शिल्पी (कारिगर) बनेगा।" वह अनजान दिव्य बालक तुरंत इंद्र की सहायता के लिए चल पड़ा और गंधर्वों ने अपने तेज से उसकी शक्ति को और बढ़ा दिया।

वह बालक इंद्र के समीप आकर बोला— आइये देवराज! मैं आपका प्रिय सारथी बनूँगा।" इंद्र ने आश्चर्य से पूछा— तुम कौन हो? इन दिव्य घोड़ों को कैसे संभालोगे?" बालक ने उत्तर दिया— मुझे ऋषि के तेज से, धरती की गोद से उत्पन्न और गंधर्वों के तेज से युक्त समझें। मैं रथ संचालन में सर्वश्रेष्ठ हूँ।

यह सुनकर इंद्र और वह बालक आकाश मार्ग की ओर बढ़ गए। इंद्र रथ पर सवार हुए और शमीक ऋषि के उस पुत्र, जिनका नाम मातलि था, उन्होंने घोड़ों की लगाम थाम ली। इसी घटना के बाद से मातलि देवराज इंद्र के स्थायी सारथी बने।

मंदर पर्वत पर लौटकर इंद्र ने शत्रु सेना के बीच एक अद्भुत पाँच रंगों वाला (सफेद, लाल, काला, ऊषा काल जैसा लाल, और सफेद-पीला) विशाल धनुष देखा और उसे बाणों सहित उठा लिया।

उस धनुष पर ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश के नाम अंकित थे। उसमें से मयूर पंख लगे हुए भयंकर बाण निकलने लगे, जो असुरों का विनाश करने लगे। इंद्र ने चारों दिशाओं में बाणों की मूसलाधार वर्षा कर दी। दैत्यों के हाथी छिद गए, घोड़े कट गए, रथ नष्ट हो गए, और महावत कराहते हुए गिरने लगे। पैदल लड़ने वाले वीर राक्षस भी मारे गए।

अपनी सेना का यह हाल देख कुजम्भ और जम्भ क्रोध में गदा लेकर इंद्र की ओर झपटे। तभी भगवान विष्णु ने अपने सुदर्शन चक्र का प्रहार किया, जिससे कुजम्भ का धड़ कट गया और वह रथ से गिरकर मृत्यु को प्राप्त हुआ।

अपने भाई को मरा देख जम्भ क्रोध में पागल हो गया और इंद्र की तरफ ऐसे दौड़ा जैसे कोई बुद्धिहीन हिरण शेर की तरफ बढ़ता है। इंद्र ने धनुष को एक तरफ रखा और अग्नि देव द्वारा दी गई, कालदंड के समान भयानक घंटियों वाली शक्ति (अस्त्र) उस पर फेंक दी।

जम्भ ने अपनी गदा से उस शक्ति को रोकने का प्रयास किया, परन्तु उस दिव्य शक्ति ने पहले जम्भ की गदा को भस्म किया और फिर उसका सीना चीरती हुई पार निकल गई। जम्भ तड़पकर धरती पर गिर पड़ा और उसके प्राण पखेरू उड़ गए।

जम्भ के मरते ही बची-कुची दैत्य सेना अत्यंत भयभीत हो गई और अपनी पीठ दिखाकर युद्ध के मैदान से भाग खड़ी हुई। सभी शिवगण भगवान विष्णु की स्तुति करने लगे और इंद्र के पराक्रम की प्रशंसा करने लगे। इसके बाद देवराज इंद्र विजयश्री के साथ भगवान शंकर के चरणों में जाकर खड़े हो गए।

A remarkable aspect of this tale is that even Lord Brahma participated in the battle:

A fierce war raged between the gods and the demons for seven hundred years. One day, Lord Shankar—possessing eighteen arms—began his evening prayers. After bathing in the sacred Saraswati River and worshipping the Sun God, he became immersed in divine ecstasy and began a celestial dance. Seeing Mahadev swaying in such bliss, all his attendants and the gods also began to dance with enthusiasm.

After enjoying the dance, Shankar’s attention returned to the battle. Empowered by his immense energy, the gods grew exceedingly strong and began to rout the demon army.

Witnessing his army’s defeat, Andhaka, the king of the demons, realized that it was impossible to defeat Mahadev in direct combat. He summoned his brother Sunda and said, "Brave Sunda! You are my brother. The lotus-eyed Parvati has captured my heart. Come, let us devise a ruse. I shall assume the form of Shankar, and you shall become his mount, Nandi. By deceiving them and enjoying the pleasures meant for him, we shall conquer everyone."

Sunda agreed. One transformed into Nandi, while the other—assuming the guise of Shiva and feigning injury—arrived at Mount Mandara.

Andhaka fearlessly entered the palace. Seeing the imposter Shiva—who was deceitfully feigning injury—Mother Parvati’s heart filled with compassion. She immediately said to her companions—Jaya, Vijaya, and Malini—"Look how the enemies have wounded my Lord! Go quickly and fetch aged ghee, turmeric, salt, and curd; I shall tend to his wounds myself."

However, as Parvati approached him, she noticed that the two divine bulls (Nandi) who always accompanied Shiva were missing. She instantly realized that this was a deceptive and terrifying demon.

The daughter of Giriraj fled the spot, and Andhaka gave chase. Parvati left the house and ran into the garden, but he pursued her there as well. To preserve the power of her penance, the Mother did not curse him; instead, she assumed a subtle form within a white *Aak* (Madar) flower and vanished. Her companions also disappeared into the thickets.

When Parvati was nowhere to be found, a disheartened Andhaka returned to his army.

As soon as Andhaka returned, the battle erupted once more. Lord Vishnu, wielding his Sudarshan Chakra and Kaumodaki mace, began to decimate the demon army. His arrows cut down groups of five, six, or seven demons at a time—much like sunlight dispels darkness. He struck some down with his mace, others with his discus or sword, and incinerated many others merely with his furious gaze.

Garuda, Lord Vishnu’s mount, claimed the lives of many demons with blows from his sharp beak and massive wings. Meanwhile, Lord Brahma sprinkled holy water upon all the gods using the lotus from his *Kamandalu* (water pot). Under the influence of that divine water, the gods became stronger than even young elephants, while the demons began to perish just as mountains shatter and crumble under the strike of the *Vajra* (thunderbolt).

Seeing Brahma and Vishnu wreaking havoc, Indra, the King of Gods, also leapt into the battlefield with his *Vajra*. Witnessing this, Bala—the king of the demons—abandoned his fight with Vishnu and Brahma to confront Indra.

Indra swung his *Vajra* with his thousand arms and thundered, "You fool! Your end is certain!" He then struck the *Vajra* directly onto Bala's head. However, upon striking Bala's rock-hard forehead, the *Vajra* itself shattered into a thousand pieces. When Bala lunged at Indra in a fit of rage, Indra fled the battlefield in fear.

Just then, a demon named Jambha challenged Indra. Unarmed and terrified, Indra approached Lord Vishnu and said, "O Lord! You alone are my protector. Seeing me without a weapon, Jambha is challenging me; please grant me a weapon."

Vishnu replied, "Cast aside your arrogance and seek refuge with Agni Dev; he is the one who will provide you with a weapon."

Indra immediately went to Agni Dev and said, "My Vajra broke while I was slaying the demon forces. Now Jambha is challenging me; please give me a weapon."

Agni Dev was pleased and, using his divine power, fashioned a fearsome weapon—resounding with the peal of hundreds of bells—and bestowed it upon Indra. Indra set out to slay Jambha with it, but in a fit of rage, Jambha dealt a powerful blow to Airavat, Indra's elephant mount. The impact shattered the elephant's head, and the massive creature collapsed to the ground like a falling mountain. Indra was flung from Airavat and began to plummet from Mount Mandara toward the earth.

Witnessing this, the Siddhas and Charanas cried out from the heavens, "O Indra! Do not fall to the earth; halt!" Indra, a master of yoga, suspended himself in mid-air for a moment and asked, "How shall I wage war without a mount?"

The gods and Gandharvas reassured him, "Do not worry; we are sending a chariot for you." The Gandharvas, led by Vishvasu, sent a magnificent golden chariot yoked with divine green horses.

Indra remarked, "The chariot has arrived, but it lacks a charioteer. Am I to manage the horses alone or fight the battle?" The Gandharvas expressed their inability to provide a charioteer. Hearing this, a disheartened Indra fell to the earth—his garland and garments scattered—causing the entire planet to tremble violently.

Seeing the earth shake in this manner, the wife of Sage Shamik cried out in alarm, "My Lord!" "Take the child outside quickly and carefully." The sage asked, "Why so?" His wife replied, "Astrologers say that when the earth trembles, whatever object is placed outside doubles in quantity."

Hearing this, the Brahmin placed his young child on the ground outside without a second thought. Then, just as he went back inside to bring out two cows, his wife stopped him, saying, "The moment has passed; now, half will be lost."

When the Brahmin hurried back outside, he saw two identical boys lying there. He asked his wise wife, "What is the meaning of this miracle?"
