-बहुत पुरानी बात है, पंचनद देश में एक राजा था। राजा की सात बेटियां थीं। एक दिन राजा ने बेटियों से पूछा, ‘मैं तुम्हें कैसा लगता हूं?’ बड़ी बेटी ने कहा, ‘आप मुझे शहद से मीठे लगते हैं।’ दूसरी से पूछा तो उसने कहा, आप मुझे गुड़ जैसे मीठे लगते हैं फिर तीसरी, चौथी, पांचवीं और छठी ने कुछ ऐसी ही बात दोहराई। किसी ने शक्कर की तरह, किसी ने शहद की तरह, किसी ने मिश्री जैसा मीठा कहा। सबसे छोटी व राजा की सबसे प्रिय बेटी से पूछने पर उसने कहा,‘महाराज! आप मुझे नमक की तरह स्वाद लगते हो।’*
यह सुनकर राजा को गुस्सा आ गया। उसने राजकुमारी से पूछा, ‘तुमने मुझे नमक जैसा क्यों कहा? लड़की ने मासूमियत से जवाब दिया ‘पिताजी मैंने जैसा महसूस किया है, वैसा ही तो कहा है।’ यह सुनकर राजा का गुस्सा आसमान पर चढ़ गया और यह तो हम सभी जानते हैं कि गुस्से में आम आदमी भी होशोहवास खो बैठता है। उसने लड़की से कहा, नालायक मैं तुझे इसकी सजा दूंगा। लड़की बोली मेरे भाग्य में जो लिखा है वह होकर रहेगा। वैसे राज ज्योतिषी ने मेरे भाग्य में रानी बनने की बात कही है। राजा ने गुस्से में सेवकों को आदेश दिया कि नगर से किसी भी कोढ़ी आदमी को उठा लाओ और इस छोटी लड़की की शादी उससे कर दो।’ राजा की बात सुनकर सब लोग चिंता में डूब गए। रानी ने हाथ-पाँव जोड़े, मंत्रियों ने राजा को समझाया लेकिन राजा ने उनकी एक न सुनी।
सेवक एक बूढ़े कोढ़ी को उठाकर राज-दरबार में ले आए। राजा ने छोटी बेटी का विवाह रस्मो-रिवाज से कोढ़ी के साथ कर दिया। राजा की बेटी ने अपनी जरा भी उदासी प्रकट नहीं होने दी।
राजकुमारी अपने पति को लेकर महल से बाहर निकल गई। उसने अपनी एक मात्र अंगूठी बेचकर एक ठेला खरीद लिया। रोज उस ठेले में अपने पति को बिठाकर भीख मांगने लगी।
एक दिन वह अपने पति को एक तालाब के पास एक पेड़ की छाँव में ठेले में बैठा छोड़कर बाजार से खाना लेने गई। ठेले में बैठे कोढ़ी ने देखा कि कुछ कौवे उस तालाब में डुबकी लगा रहे हैं और जब वे बाहर निकलते हैं तो हंस निकलते हैं। यह देखकर वह हैरान हुआ। अचानक उसके दिमाग में एक विचार आया कि, ‘क्यों न मैं भी तालाब में डुबकी लगाऊं। कौआ हंस बनकर बाहर निकल सकता है तो हो सकता है, मेरा कोढ़ ठीक हो जाए और मैं भी सुंदर नौजवान बन जाऊं।’ वह तालाब में डुबकी लगाने उतरने लगा तो उसने सोचा कि यदि मैं सुंदर नौजवान युवक बनकर निकलूंगा तो मेरी पत्नी मुझे कैसे पहचानेगी। यह सोचकर उसने अपनी चितली उंगली को पानी से बाहर रखकर डुबकी लगाने का फैसला किया, ताकि उसकी पत्नी उसे पहचान ले। डुबकी लगाकर वह पानी से बाहर निकला तो उसका सपना साकार हो चुका था। वह मुस्कुराता हुआ ठेले पर बैठ गया।
जब राजकुमारी वापस आई तो उसने देखा कि उसके पति की जगह एक सुंदर नौजवान ठेले पर बैठा हुआ मुस्कुरा रहा है। उसके मन में ख्याल आया कि शायद इस नौजवान ने उसके कोढ़ी पति को मार डाला है और अब उससे शादी करना चाहता है। यह सोचते ही उसकी आंखें गुस्से से लाल हो गईं। वह युवक से बोली, ‘बता, मेरा पति कहां है?’ नहीं तो मैं तुझे मार डालूँगी।
युवक ने हँस कर कहा, ‘पगली मैं ही तेरा पति हूं।’
परंतु वह न मानी और रोते हुए बोली, ‘तुम मुझसे झूठ कह रहे हो, मैं पतिव्रता स्त्री हूँ। मेरा पति ही मेरा परमेश्वर है, मैं तुम्हारी चाल में नहीं आउंगी तुम्हें मारकर खुद भी मर जाउंगी। यह कहते हुए उसने अपनी कटार निकाल ली। नौजवान युवक अपनी पत्नी के सच्चे प्रेम की मन-ही-मन सराहना करने लगा। उसने अपना हाथ, जो अब तक पीछे छुपा रखा था, सामने कर दिया और अपनी वह उंगली दिखाई जिसमें कोढ़ का निशान अभी भी बाकी था।
राजकुमारी ने अपने पति को पहचान लिया। युवक ने बताया कि वह कश्मीर का राजकुमार है। एक बार उसने भूलकर एक साधू का अपमान कर दिया था, उसकी जरा-सी भूल के कारण साधु क्रोधित हो उठा था और उसने मुझे कोढ़ी होने का शाप दिया था। कोढ़ी हो जाने के बाद वह खुद ही अपने पिता के राज्य से दूर पंचनद में आ गया था।
इस चमत्कार को देखकर राजकुमारी की खुशी का ठिकाना नहीं रहा। राजकुमार अपनी पत्नी के साथ अपने राज्य में लौटा। उसके पिता उसे देखकर खुश हो गए, उन्होंने उसी दिन उसे राज गद्दी सौंप दी-..!!!

Long ago, there was a king in the land of Panchnad. He had seven daughters. One day, the king asked his daughters, "How do you perceive me?" The eldest daughter said, "You seem sweeter than honey to me." When he asked the second, she said, "You seem as sweet as jaggery." The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth daughters echoed similar sentiments; some compared his sweetness to sugar, others to honey or rock candy. When he asked his youngest—and favorite—daughter, she replied, "Your Majesty! You taste like salt to me."
Hearing this, the king flew into a rage. He asked the princess, "Why did you compare me to salt?" The girl replied innocently, "Father, I simply spoke of how I truly feel." This infuriated the king further; as we all know, even an ordinary person loses their composure in anger. He told the girl, "You wretch, I shall punish you for this." The girl replied, "What is written in my destiny is bound to happen. Besides, the royal astrologer has predicted that I am destined to become a queen." In his anger, the king ordered his servants to fetch a leper from the city and marry his youngest daughter to him. Everyone was deeply concerned upon hearing the king's command. The queen pleaded with him, and the ministers tried to reason with him, but the king would not listen to anyone.
The servants brought an elderly leper to the royal court. The king had his youngest daughter married to the leper with full traditional rites. The king's daughter did not let even a trace of sadness show.
The princess left the palace with her husband. She sold her only ring and bought a handcart. Every day, she would seat her husband in the cart and go out to beg.
One day, she left her husband seated in the cart under the shade of a tree near a pond and went to the market to fetch food. A leper sitting on a cart saw some crows diving into a pond and emerging as swans. Astonished by this sight, a thought crossed his mind: "Why shouldn't I take a dip in the pond too? If a crow can emerge as a swan, perhaps my leprosy will be cured, and I, too, might become a handsome young man." As he prepared to step into the pond, he wondered how his wife would recognize him if he emerged as a handsome youth. Deciding to ensure she could identify him, he resolved to keep his little finger out of the water while he dipped. He took the plunge and emerged to find his dream realized; smiling, he sat back on the cart.
When the princess returned, she saw a handsome young man smiling on the cart where her husband had been. She suspected that this stranger had killed her leper husband and now intended to marry her. Her eyes turned red with rage at the thought. She demanded of the young man, "Tell me, where is my husband? Otherwise, I shall kill you."
The young man laughed and said, "Silly woman, I am your husband."
But she refused to believe him and wept, saying, "You are lying to me. I am a devoted wife; my husband is my God. I will not fall for your trickery; I will kill you and then take my own life." Saying this, she drew her dagger. The young man silently admired his wife's true love. He brought forward the hand he had kept hidden behind his back and revealed the finger that still bore the mark of leprosy.
The princess recognized her husband. The young man explained that he was a prince from Kashmir. He recounted how he had once inadvertently insulted a sage; the sage, enraged by that minor lapse, had cursed him with leprosy. After contracting leprosy, he had voluntarily moved away from his father's kingdom to Panchnad.
Witnessing this miracle, the princess was overjoyed beyond measure. The prince returned to his kingdom with his wife; his father was delighted to see him and handed over the throne to him that very day.
